How You Do It
Good stuff, yes? So, how do you get it?
The Flight Rising Encyclopedia has an
article on how to pair a familiar up with a dragon and bond with it, so check that out for the basics. I'll try to address the more complicated questions here---and certainly the most frequent ones.
I've got 2 of familiar X, and only one of them is with a dragon. Why can't I pair the other one up too?
Because any clan can only partner with one of
each kind of familiar.
Got six extra Wildwood Owls? I've been there too. You can sell them back to the game, list them in the Auction House, find deserving newbies to give them to, transmute them with Baldwin, hope that Crim will ask for one or that Swipp will get a swap for them someday, but you can't pair them with dragons.
Why can't I see my familiar(s) on the Stored Familiars page?
Probably because you have
already assigned one of that type of familiar
to another dragon. See 'I've got 2 of familiar X . . . ?' (above).
You also won't see a familiar there if you only have that kind of familiar
in your Vault, and none in your Hoard.
What happens to my bonding level if I . . .
- . . . move familiar X to a different dragon?
- . . . remove familiar X from a dragon and pair it up with the same dragon later?
- . . . remove familiar X from a dragon and pair it up with a new dragon later?
- . . . get rid of familiar X and then get a new familiar X later?
Nothing! In short, the
only way you can change familiar X's bonding level is by bonding with it. Any form of not-bonding-with-a-familiar leaves your familiar exactly where you left off, whether because you don't have the familiar anymore, or you set it to the side to advance other familiars, or you just haven't had time to bond with your familiars for a few days because real life can be busy.
A familiar's bonding level is a reflection of that type of familiar's relationship with your entire clan. So, any shuffling of familiars from one dragon to another, or even selling off and re-acquiring of the same kind of familiar won't change the bonding level. Why
any Amaranth Moth can now be loyal to your clan, despite the fact that you've only interacted with
one is probably the space to start expanding on some headcanon . . . perhaps it has to do with how many Amaranth Moth secret handshakes you've learned.
If I buy a familiar that has been bonded with before, does the current bonding level of the familiar stay with it?
That depends on whether
you have bonded with a familiar.
If you bonded with, say, a Bumble for 5 days, and then sell it, and then buy or collect another Bumble, you'll find that you have 5 days' worth of bonding already with that familiar. However, if your friend bonds with a Death Seeker until it's Awakened, and then gives the Death Seeker to you (and you have never bonded with a Death Seeker), you'd see that you have 0 days' worth of bonding with that familiar.
What happens to the Bestiary entry if I get rid of a familiar?
The entry gets greyed out and the familiar's status is listed as Locked (instead of Wary or Companion or whatever it had been).
This applies whether you picked up a familiar so you could sell it back to Crim for a quick profit, or you had bonded with that familiar until it reached Awakened. So, if you want to advance new familiars and keep a full, bright Bestiary, you should hang on to those Awakened familiars in either your Hoard or your Vault.
However, as with 'What happens to my bonding level . . .' (above), when you acquire that familiar again, the entry gets colourful again, and the status is listed as what it had been when you had sold it.
How does the Vault affect familiars?
There are several things to note about how it does (and does not) affect them:
- The familiar is unavailable for being partnered with a dragon.
- Your bonding level still stays the same.
- Your Bestiary entry still stays colourful.
- The number of different kinds of familiars that you have (displayed next to the icon of the book) may not reflect the actual number of different familiars you have.
Why is the number of different kinds of familiars I have wrong?
I don't know the coding reason for why, but I can explain the effect. If you go to the Bestiary itself, the number there (above the right hand arrow) is always correct. A number for different familiars owned also appears next to the icon of a book in three places:
- on your user profile page
- in the user status box on the right side of the page header
- under your icon on forum posts
The first of these---the profile page---will always show the number of different familiars you have
except those in your Vault (that is, familiars with dragons and in your Hoard). The second two usually represent the total number of different familiars you have,
including the Vault; they may, however, sometimes be the same as the number on your profile page. This seems to occur after altering the number of different kinds of familiars in your Hoard (whether gaining, losing, or shifting to the Vault); the error does tend to correct itself within a day or so.
How many times can I bond with a familiar each day?
You can bond
once with each kind of familiar you have.
Switch your familiars around between your dragons as much as you like, those familiars are only bonding once.
How many times can a dragon bond with familiars each day?
As many as you like.
Familiars can only bond once each day, but
dragons don't have any such limitation. So, if you have more familiars than dragons, you could still bond with all of your familiars every day. It may be a little tedious, but you can pair each of those five (or two hundred) extra familiars you have with the same dragon---one after another---and bond with each of them.
I reached Awakened with my familiar! What's it good for now?
50 Treasure each time you bond with it.
You got the Gilded Decorative Chest the day you reached Awakened, of course, but from now on, all you'll get from that familiar is the daily bonding Treasure. Kind of disappointing, maybe, but there's a lot more familiars in the game. If you have got more familiars than dragons, you might find this a good opportunity to switch the Awakened familiar out for one that still has more advancing (and more chests) to go. If you want to keep the familiar's Bestiary entry colourful, you'll need to hang onto the familiar, though in your Hoard or Vault will be fine for that.
Is there any way to start the bonding sequence over with a familiar I've already bonded with?
No---forward is the only direction to go. The only way to work through the sequence of chests (and daily Treasure) again is to do it with a new familiar.
Do I get any special chests or rewards from . . .
- . . . a holiday familiar?
- . . . a gem Marketplace familiar?
- . . . a special event familiar?
- . . . a chest-only familiar?
Nope.
All familiars give the same daily treasure and, when they level, the same sequence of chests. The
contents of those chests are randomized from a pool of possible contents---to see what you could get from a chest, check out the
Chest locations and contents thread.
What's the total value of stuff from bonding with a familiar?
Most of the value is going to come from the chests, and since their contents are random, this will be somewhat difficult to predict. Assuming you open all six of those chests, this is approximately what you'd get:
- 2980 Treasure (from daily bonding)
- ~18,250 Treasure from chests (median average; actual range: 10,500--26,000)
- ~18.5 gems from chests (median average; actual range: 7--30)
- 18 items from chests (including 3 chances for a familiar---Rusted chests don't contain familiars, but Iron and Gilded each have a chance of containing one)
- resale value of the familiar itself (if you don't want to keep it)
Again, take a look at the
Chest locations and contents thread if you want a better idea of what those 18 random items could be (and what they might be worth). As a very crude guess (not backed up by actual numbers), I might estimate the 'total value of stuff' to be around 25,000 to 75,000T. Or something. (Honestly, idk.) It will also have taken you almost 3 months to get all that (assuming you were bonding with your familiars every day), so it's not the quickest way to wealth. However, if you're working 10 at a time (or 30, or 60), it will certainly add up.
You didn't answer my question! What do I do?
