TOPIC | Search Function: 'Exalted' and 'Gen 1'
1 2
I can almost guarantee that someone has suggested these search function enhancements in the past, but I haven't been able to find the threads.

Suggestion
Have two more options when performing dragon searches:
    [1] Exalted - Three options: yes/no/blank
    [2] Gen 1 (or Parentless) - Three options: yes/no/blank

Why does this matter?
To address the first suggestion, it's extremely disheartening and difficult to find the perfect dragon you've been searching for all week and realize they've been exalted. On top of that, being able to hide exalted dragons would streamline the searching process for users and prevent players from digging through page after page of results. Hopefully it would help the servers out a tiny bit too.

As far as showing Parentless dragons goes, the lack of an adequate Gen. 1 directory means players have to click on individual dragons to check their lineages (or lack thereof), which takes a great deal of time and sometimes multiple server requests. It would be incredibly useful for people starting a new breeding line to be able to start from scratch using only Gen. 1s, and it can be very hit or miss scouring the AH and asking around the forums.

Anything else?
I'm a dragon fetcher and I'm selfish, so these would be awesome enhancements in my daily pixel dragon life, lol.

EDIT: By the way, admins, thank you so much for bringing the search function back. It's my absolute favorite.

I'm on board with this, @Possum! The search function is really handy, but it'd be so much more helpful (and so much less disappointing) if it were possible to filter out dragons that have been exalted. And while I've never undertaken a specific Gen 1 search myself, I can imagine the lack of a filter for it makes things significantly more time consuming.

Support for exalted!
No support for gen1.

As hypocritical as this is going to sound, as I am a gen1 collector, I think the staff wants less of an emphasis on gen1 dragons and the desirability of gen1s. Having any exclusivity with gen1s within the game will only make more people want to buy them instead of breeding dragons which is a major feature of the game.

This is also why I don't support a gen1 sorting function in the auction house.

@Story, interesting idea! I have to disagree with it though.

To me, the purpose of a Gen. 1 dragon is to breed, breed, and breed some more without fear of clashing family lines. If anything, they'd be boosting the population of available dragons by preventing the disappointing roadblock that many players stumble upon when they breed dragons with extensive lineages who happen to be related within five generations.

On top of that, Gen. 1 drops are fairly rare (and will remain fairly rare unless something drastic changes in the future), preventing a huge influx of Parentless dragons to overwhelm the market.

I can't speak for the admins, obviously, but I'm not sure why they'd want no or little emphasis on Gen. 1 dragons and release them into gameplay at all. It's a good way to start new breeding lines after players' progens have been overbred, and, among other things, keeps people going back to the Coli and using Gathering Turns on the off chance that an egg drops.

But you see not everyone thinks of Gen.1s as a way of having a fresh new breeding line, some people see them as something rare and worth collecting. There is this stigma that gen1s are special and that any other generation is not even if that is not true in terms of the game. Having a search feature for gen1s exclusively, such as looking them up in the search, will make them exclusive from every other generation and thus more desirable.

Meanwhile, unless your breeding for certain colors, it is pretty difficult to inbred dragons because there are so many of them and there will be many more dragons in the future. I do knowledge that it does happen though but I would say a better solution would be having a way to track linage on any dragon with a click of a button rather than looking at generation 1 dragons exclusively.

The point isn't that gen1 dragons are going to flood the market, it's quite the opposite. It's rather that more people would rather buy gen1 dragons because they are special and less people will want other generations. This is starting to happen now I suppose but having a search feature like this will justify it that much more.

The admins have gone on record, via tumblr, saying that they didn't want generation as a focus on FR. Mainly because generation can often kill breeding sites. Wajas is a prime example, where there are just so many wajas, that people start looking at trivial thinks like ID number and generation instead of breed and color. Though I do agree that gen1s do have their purpose and it was practically unavoidable to not have them, I don't think the game should recognize them any more than it does now.

To each their own I guess.

Edit:
Again, I recognize the hypocrisy. xD It's just, something that concerns me. I'd not like FR to turn into wajas.

Wouldn't the accessibility of Gen. 1s via the proposed search make them easier to find, thus less desirable? I know that generation matters very little to me personally unless I'm trying to start a new line of very specific colors. Otherwise, it's off to the AH I go. I see far more players out there breeding for color and genes (like the triple fad that's happening now) than for low generations/IDs.

Not recognizing Gen. 1s doesn't make sense to me either. They are recognized and will continue to be recognized by simply existing, and some players care about them while others do not. The idea of using the search function to filter for Gen. 1s came from an ease-of-use and user-friendly gameplay mindset. The usefulness of Parentless dragons was my focus, not to make (in my eyes) a pointless collector's edition catalogue for players with stagnant lairs.

Fair enough though. I don't play any other pet sites and don't share the stigma of not wanting to breed Gen. 1s, and the search function would be highly beneficial for me. :)

I suppose making them easier to find would sorta devalue them. But then again, like you said they will always be valuable because eggs are rare thus there is a limited supply of of them. A search feature will a gen1 filter will highlight them, show case them if you will.

I think my generation/ID example was a poor one, but I still stand by it. You don't see many people look of that those things now because certain color combos are still fairly rare. They wont be forever though because they can multiply way faster than new gen1s and certain IDs. the site isn't even a year old and we are already being picky about color. I do believe generation will be a major factor later on.

But I'm getting ahead of myself.

And you are absolutely right generation is something that will always be desirable just because it is there. It is unavoidable not to have them like I said earlier. As silly as that might sound, having a search function for gen1s will make them desirable to more people because they are in a way being showcased. I know that is not your intent, but that is the reason why I pointed it out.
And here I am being hypocritical again. xD While I won't support a search function for parentless dragons but I can't say if wont be usuful to me if it were implemented since I collect gen1 dragons.

Also on an unrelated note, what about progren dragons?

@Story, do you mean have a search option for progens, or some other designator on their page? I can totally get behind that as well. It can be very confusing and disappointing to realize the perfect Gen. 1 can't leave the lair, lol.

By the way, I've got a forest/goldenrod/soil Gen. 1 girl who's hanging out in my lair and I plan to eventually trade or sell her, if you're interested in camouflage-looking dragons, haha.
