TOPIC | "Tip Jar" for forum posts
1 2 3 4 5 6 7
My idea is this: A button to give someone a small amount of treasure when they make a good post.

I've seen the discussion suggesting each post generate some treasure and I've seen others like it before, but the biggest problem with such a system is it isn't selective and so encourages spam and meaningless posts. A tip jar function wouldn't have this problem, or at least not to the same extent; it would encourage users to be thoughtful, witty, and/or helpful.

Likelihood of treasure amount per click could be determined with something like 60% low range (25-100), 35% mid range (101-250), and 5% high range (251-500), with the exact amount rolled randomly from within the selected set.

Anyone have ideas for how to further refine this?

It'd almost have to come out of the tipper's pockets. Otherwise I just see users tipping their friends' spam posts to generate easy treasure to their friends rather than encourage quality posts.

Pings are disabled.

If writers are supposed to "show not tell," why are we called "storytellers" and not "storyshow-ers"?

It should come from the tipper not be generated by the site.

I like this, and I think I actually like it more with the treasure coming from myself rather than thin air. I don't know, it makes it seem more meaningful to me. And it would definitely promote creative or rational thinking in the forums, too, especially the suggestions forum... suddenly there would be much more of an incentive to explain your reasoning rather than toss out "support" or "no support".

I support this! Often times I don't know how to show my appreciation for a post.

As long as it's users giving to users, not the site giving to users, then I am all about this idea.

I support this! On another site I use, the forums have a "tribute" system. It works by giving "tribute" for each forum post and it can be used to buy items for the game.

Since this community is much larger than that one, though, I think having users tip to each other would be better. Although, I think keeping it to small amounts of treasure would be better to reduce inflation?
