I had been trying to get my boyfriend into the game here but the registration windows are so short and with his and my working schedules, it's difficult for us to get on in time to get him registered. Perhaps an optional email invite would be good for the community at some point in the future? Or maybe extended registration windows? :( We're both grown adults but he really wanted to get his own account on here after seeing mine. (Even if it's not so special, it is to me, that's what counts, I guess!)

You could've created an account for him with just his usual alias and a pass--lots of people share IPs, you know. If he doesn't like his usual name as his display name, there's one free display name change. He could've built his progen/chosen a flight at any time by himself.

...For the record, you really should not create an account for someone else. The ToU has pretty clearly, as the third and fourth lines:
You can yourself only make one account. If YOU are making an account for your boyfriend YOU are still making the account.
But even after doing that, you would be sharing the account details of that account with him. Even if he later changes the password/email, you were both still aware of them.
I would like an invite system, that'd be a very cool way of letting in more users at a slower pace as well as having more people use you as a referral link, but I believe the eventual goal that the staff are working towards is open registration, every day, all day.
I hope next registration window though, you guys have a few minutes within it to get him registered! :C

The policies also explain that folks using their abandoned accounts to throw stuff at another player counts as "multiple account behavior", even if they're different people, and probably counts even from different IPs. Which is reasonable, as it is the base issue. I think imputing the usual name and a temporary pass would be reasonable, as well, since it is not controlling the account's actual behavior.

I dont think making the account for him while he was at work or whatever the case and just letting him finish the details when he returned would have been against the rules. It's still his account, you're merely claiming a spot for him.
However, i cant support email invite or longer windows. The staff have a hard time so far keeping up with the traffic on the site, which is why they've done registration in windows and not simply opened it. They shouldn't extend it any further beyond what they feel the site can tolerate, otherwise we risk destabilizing the site.
The windows are to limit the amount of people that come in and there were several days in advance of warning given that it was coming up. They have to limit the influx of players so they can monitor the site afterward and be certain the site can handle the new users. If all goes well, they work on opening another window.
I'm sorry he wasn't able to get in, but they can't work to everyone's schedules, its just not possible. If they made an exception for him, theyd have to do it for everyone else that couldnt get in, and that may be too much for the servers right now.

Why not a limited email invite system though? It would be more open for folks that work the night shifts and have trouble getting online during most weekdays, and feel more inclusive as well. Plus with the limit, it would be easier to handle the traffic load from the invited members, because it's not a huge amount of folks at once trying to log in and register.
In addition, I know of the registration policies and did not wish to risk an account action against my own due to trying to eagerly acquire a spot for him to play too. I get how this post sounds whine-filled, but it's more to the fact that each registration window we've had only lasts just under a week, and by the time he's off work and available to log in and play online, the window had already done passed and closed.
I felt the email registration would be better than the registration windows because it would be limited to a certain number for each account on here, each month, or biannual basis. This would lessen the traffic workload of the site, and give a bit of wiggle room for a more inclusive sense of community.

Was your boyfriend unable to get to a computer for 5 minutes at all during the 24 hour window? It only takes 5 minutes to initially register.
When I registered, I thought only a certain number of accounts were available, so I stayed up until window opening, spent 5 minutes to get my email in, and turned off the computer. The next day, I set everything up.
Also if we could get an admin ruling on entering an email and password for other people but then never touching their accounts again that'd be great.

An invite system like AO3's would be kinda neat. We send in a request for 1 to 3 invites then wait for them to approve or not.
But I am not sure. With AO3, I got a response/invites after 1-3 days. While on FR it took me 3 months to resolve my "lost item due to site hiccup" issue.
Still I support this.

Thing is that even if we only got one or two referrals each and if only the active players sent out an invite, we'll still manage to overload the site.

The reason they do registration windows instead of e-mail or invite registration is it (and the high activity immediately after) acts a real time stress test for the severs. Registration windows result in a flood while, invitation registration wold be a trickle. The flood results in a better test than a trickle would. The ultimate goal is to once again have open registration, and these real time stress tests are one of the steps towards that.
No support for an invitation registration.
As for longer registration windows; I beleive its best to allow the admins to judge how the servers are handling it, to dtermine the length of the window-- in a previous window they extended the time because the servers were handling it well
