Babylon is not a dragon. He’s merely borrowing a dragon’s form - and a dragon’s name. He may have been human….oid once, now he’s merely a relic of the second age, a shadowed spirit vanquished with the Speaker’s coming, a monster that destroys nearly everything it touches.

He was banished with the return to order.

He was freed with the Arcanist’s birth...

...Kind of.

Freed of his cage, he still existed in a void, alone and unknown, except to the spirits bound there. He may have caught some of their eyes as he moved among them but he ignored them, they couldn’t entertain him as he wished, so why should he care? He feared this was his fate for eternity…

Until he saw Jinyoung’s soul glowing white-hot in that void, scattered there briefly by the fox-spirits saving his life. He latched onto that life and followed it, clinging and shrieking to himself as he was pulled back into reality.

No longer purely spirit, but still without a body, he went back to waiting, content to whisper sweet fears into the broken Pearlcatcher’s head. During the Mistral Jamboree, a wandering Shadow magician provided the perfect opportunity. His magic tore a tiny hole in reality -

And Babylon dove through. He possessed the magician - a handsome spiral - literally buring his soul (....and organs and bones) away. What remains is simply Babylon, animating his shell like a puppet. If he were cut, Shade would seep from the wounds like viscous smoke, but he’s careful to make sure he’s never injured in the presence of others.

He likes to watching things writhe and burn, but he also likes to lie. He may be boneless, soulless, literal shade scum, but he’s proud that no one’s seen through his disguise as a simple slight of hand magician. Well. Jinyoung and Sandeul both are legitimately terrified of him, but since neither can explain why he remains safe…

Of course, life would have been easier if Jinyoung hadn’t instinctively bound him to a tallow candle their first encounter. The Pearlcatcher is unaware of what he’s done - but his magic is still strong. As long as the flame is lit, Babylon is bound, almost as harmless as he was in the void. He cannot touch the candle, and Jinyoung’s instincts are good enough that he will never let it burn out…

But it’s only a matter of time, right?

He's waiting again, gathering around himself lovely dragons to manipulate just as he manipulates his own body, carving out little sections of the city of Aethinius for him and his minions. Shinwoo clearly doesn't trust him, and Sacrosanct gives him an odd look any time the cross paths, but Babylon has survived so much worse than an odd look, and thus he carries on...

Just waiting.
