Biography

Spinel | Dracolich Sentinel

Obsidian Sparklers Wing Bones

♫♪ Music - Down by Breaking Benjamin ♪♫

Jaded and helpless, I long to breathe; Wasted and empty inside
To feel faceless and buried alone; Into your eyes I live, beautifully broken

Spinel is very withdrawn and quiet around almost everybody. He is not entirely sure if he is actually mortal. After a few rough encounters that he really shouldn't have 'survived', he began to suspect that those strange memories from his childhood weren't merely bad dreams, like his parents told him they were.

Opal has been Spinel's best friend for as far back as he can remember. He is grateful that she tolerates his sullen and pessimistic behavior, as well as the undead-ness that only becomes more obvious as he 'ages'. Of course, she doesn't love him any less for it.

When Spinel dreams it's always dark. Like there's a shadow over every image his mind can conjure. There's always running, the feel of heat across his skin, and an underlying terror that eats at him. In all of his dreams, Spinel burns.

It isn't unusual for him to have nightmares, he's had them for as far back as he can remember - there's always the same dragon in them with dark, terrible eyes - the dragon that screams words that always seem to slip through his fingers like sand through an hourglass as soon as he awakens. He knows that dragon, and their name always seems to sit on the tip of his tongue, tormenting him with things he's forgotten.

Spinel hates the nights he dreams, but this one was particularly bad. The lingering terror of things that already seem fuzzy and far away still buzzes under his skin like a swarm of angry wasps, and he already knows he isn't getting to sleep again tonight. But nor does he particularly want to be alone, either. Not with his own thoughts, strange as they often turn.

He usually wouldn't even consider it but - he finds himself slowly climbing out of bed with special care, as if wounded. There's only one dragon he would be willing to bother at this hour, only one dragon he trusts enough. Opal. He's known her practically as long as he can remember (and when memory is as precious as it is to Spinel, who half-remembers terrible things that he shouldn't, that is saying something) and he knows she wouldn't kick him out.

That still doesn't make him feel less awkward though, as he lumbers out of his room feeling like a frightened child seeking the company of their parents to make the bad dreams go away. His only saving grace is the fact that Opal's light is on. That makes him feel slightly less out of place when she answers the door looking slightly frazzled.

"Shouldn't you be asleep?" Spinel asks gravely, ignoring his own hypocrisy as she gestures him inside. Judging from the rolled eyes she graces him with, she's well aware of it regardless. Opal already knows about his trouble sleeping - he has precious few secrets from her - so she's already hustling him over to the tastefully arranged cushions to sit down. Spinel gratefully takes a seat, and then the mug of lukewarm hot chocolate Opal is already pushing into his claws. It was probably meant for herself, but Opal had always been generous with her possessions as well as her heart. He sips from the mug delicately and decides not to comment on the temperature.

Opal is already back to her desk which is uncharacteristically unorganized. Spinel raises a brow at her in question, and that is all the invitation she needs.

"Two days." She all but growls out - very uncharacteristic of the usually collected coatl, "They give me two days notice for the party they want to throw." She punctuates this by waving one of the papers around, which from the quick glimpses Spinel catches of Opal's scrawled calligraphy appears to be a list of some kind. Spinel takes another sip of his lukewarm chocolate and hums sympathetically.

Fortunately, Opal is used to his silences. She tosses the paper back onto her desk and seizes another to wave around. "And you would not believe who is on the list to bring food. It's not that I don't like Avens, I do, but bringing cupcakes? Again? After the last three disasters? I'm pretty sure Hemlock can't even look him in the eyes after that disastrous birthday party. Not that I can blame him. I wasn't even there and I still cringe when it's brought up."

Spinel, who was in attendance at said disaster wisely says nothing and places the now drained mug on the table, making sure to grab a coaster first so that Opal doesn't get on his case about it.

Listening to Opal rant was actually soothing, believe it or not. Already the details of his dream that he could remember were starting to go out of focus. He could no longer recall the color of the eyes of the familiar stranger that haunted him. The buzzing anxiety under his skin had been washed away with the last dregs of his lukewarm hot chocolate. He listens with half an ear as Opal starts on about the decorations planned, and Spinel doesn't even notice his eyes start to slip shut until a warm weight is placed on him.

Opal hasn't stopped her stream of words or her bustling around the room, but she's managed to find and retrieve a thick quilt from somewhere while Spinel wasn't paying attention and has already shaken it out and draped it across Spinel's form. She gives him scolding look when he opens his mouth to say something, so he thinks better of it and instead pulls the quilt to settle more firmly across his shoulder.

" - I know Styrax is helping as much as he can." Opal continues gamely as Spinel's eyes droop closed again as he sinks deeper into the pillows, "Bless his heart, but he's so busy with his actual duties and he can't just be expected to drop those. Two days notice! Honestly it's like they want to be the death of me."

She looks over at Spinel again, only to smile fondly at the sight before her. The big guardian's eyes are closed as he breathes softly, looking only a little bit ridiculous under the bright patterning of the quilt. But at least he's sleeping. Maybe tonight will finally put a dent into his semi-permanent eye bags.

Opal gives him another fond look, walking over to smooth the quilt just a little and also grabs the now empty mug from the table to take to the kitchen. Still, she can't help but linger for just a moment over her oldest friend.

"Good night, Spinel." She tells him, quiet affection making her voice warm, "Sweet dreams."
