Asagao

A Shadow egg appeared amongst the Clan on the first day of the Trickmurk Circus, clean and wrapped in straw against the cold, but unattended. Suspecting trickery - possibly with reason - a swift council was pulled together, a quick discussion had. At last, they came to agreement: the egg was a gift from the Shadowbinder, and should be accepted with all honors, even amongst a stronghold of the Light. Thus, they carried the egg to the edge of the Rimward Forest, and Forestier the clan-guardian called out for the founder, seeking her blessing on the new arrival.

"What will hatch from it?" wondered Maraschino, and she summoned Soleil to join in divination. Would the new chick be a fine representative of its flight, bearing, perhaps, the Shadowbinder's favored hues upon its skin? They were unable even to determine the breed of the egg, such were the glowing growths that covered it, and so they brooded over it, shaking rune-bones and muttering chants, until the light dimmed and the shell was heard to crack.

When the hatchling within burst free of the shell, merry laughter rose up under the eaves of the forest. It has been speculated that Shadow may suit Sarekhan better than Light, and rumors spread amongst the Clan that she would formally declare a change near the Circus - but here was a bright mirror of dark Sarekhan - golden hide to her silver wings, glittering earth-dark wings to her shining shadowed hide. Even the young one's eyes reflected the Forest Wyrm - utter dark to her blazing bright.

The hatchling - a Guardian also, and by her horns and size a female, though later zie would both outstrip the other Guardians of the clan in sheer mass, and correct them on the matter - turned to face the sun, and shook off the last fragments of the egg from zir wings.

"What is your name?" Sarekhan asked, from the shadows of the forest.
"Asagao," replied the hatchling, "the flower that always faces the sun."

So began a long friendship. Asagao was the dragon found most frequently in the Rimward Forest, and the Forest Wyrm came more often to the terraces of her Clan.

And, in a deeper tangled forest, a softer laughter was heard...
