When I get this feeling
I feel it just behind my back
I call it a dog
I call it a dog
The dog is black

Hellhounds and barghests, the Grim, Cù-Sìth and Cŵn Annwn, Garmr and Cerberus, Red Riding Hood's wolf, Beauty's Beast, La Bête du Gévaudan, werewolves. Perrault and Grimm and the versions that predate; Carter, "The Company of Wolves"; Kiernan in The Red Tree. Winston Churchill called his depression a black dog.
"Which path will you take? The Path of Needles or the Path of Pins?"

The black dog guards the Underworld; his visits presage death. He runs far afront the Wild Hunt, raucous and slavering. (He catches the deer, a mortal in disguise, and will not kill it kills it. He cannot catch the White Stag.) He's the tracking hound, steady pawpads always following, big black shadow. He is the stranger-friend, not to be trusted; he is the sweetest, the sharpest. He haunts the edges of civilization, preys on livestock, and means you can never forget the wilds: the dark, the forest, the inhumanity. The potential to become a beast. He forces choices. He marks unavoidable change: awakenings, decisions, desires. Death.

"Singing. Howling. Ringing. Moon."
