Biography

Dusk
The Stargazer
Reader of the Heavens

Arrived beneath the Willow on April 8, 2015

Dusk is a quiet, mysterious dragon. He helped Sonata found the Clarus Clan, after stumbling into a friendship with her and later on, Ashlesha. The three were close compatriots, and together, they worked to create a new home in the midst of the western Gladeveins for wandering dragons and hatchlings. Sonata’s desire was for no dragon to be left alone or abandoned; with her past, Dusk understood why she felt this need. He, too, was happy for such a home. He had never felt as if he belonged before - before he became a Tundra.

There was great promise to this land - plenty of fertile space for gardeners to grow their crops, thick forest backing into the Shrieking Wilds, high cliffs with clear air and clear skies (perfect for stargazers, such as Dusk himself), and running water at the rivers and streams, and the ocean beneath the cliffs. And Ashlesha’s Charge, the great Willow itself, provided as much shelter as any could possibly need. Dragons were welcome from all over Sorneith to join the Clan, with the right conditions to please dragons elementally-aligned with Shadow, Wind, Water - and yes, Nature. Light- and Arcane-born dragons were attracted to the Clan for their scholarly and magical values, too.
As the Clan began to grow, Dusk was more than happy to step down from his position as second-in-command. Although he was the first dragon to join Sonata’s side, he knew he was not the right fit to lead the Clan.

He entrusted Ashlesha with the duty of leading by Sonata’s side; the Tundra knew the Guardian would be perfect for the Clan.

Dusk, instead, became the Clan’s star-reader. He delivered prophesies from the heavens to Sonata and the Clarus Clan councils as necessary, working close with the priest Sarako.

At first, he also carried a duty as a healer, happy to be of use. But when Khseraf joined the Clan as a full-time medic, Dusk relinquished those duties as well. He was happy to lose himself in the stars above, and only to help his Clanmates as when his help was required. He retained most of his herbal knowledge, although Khseraf only needed his help in the most dire of situations.

As a star-gazer, Dusk is nocturnal. He would sleep during the day oftentimes, and wake in the early evening, while most of his Clanmates were winding down from their days. He works quietly and alone, so he doesn’t mind. He’s careful to avoid disturbing the others as he leaves the lair to go to the cliffside and study the stars there. Sometimes, other dragons would join him, particularly members from the Guild of the Stars. On the rare occasion even Sarako would join him, and the two would keep one another company with their quiet work.

This made for peaceful times … until Dusk received a prophecy about his daughter. In an effort to avoid what had been prophesied, Dusk ignored his daughter. But still, Adagio destroyed everything. By the time the young Fae had grown and left the nursery, she had already developed a deeply-rooted distrust of Dusk. The Tundra was not keen on these matters; he only noticed that the Fae did not speak to him any more, and that Sarako stopped joining him at the cliffs.

It wasn’t until the Hypnos Scandal broke completely over the Clan like a great wave crashing, unstoppable, did Dusk recognize his mistake. He had brought this upon himself. Sarako and Adagio caused the deaths of many - including Khseraf - before the Clan could stop the two. Dusk stepped in as healer in place of Khseraf, tending to the wounds brought on by Dusk’s fatal fall as a parent - until another healer came to the Clan, a Tundra by the name of Marcel.

Now, Dusk receded into himself. Sonata gave up her place as matriarch. Ashlesha remained as a guide to Adagio’s daughter, Aria, but times were uneasy. The older generation of dragons - those who had first joined the Clan in its infancy - were either dead or eager to shake their bonds with one another. Few were still loyal to the Clan. Aria was determined to bring the Clan back to its former greatness. And with the help of the Councils, she did.

More dragons from around Sorneith, and especially from the Clan’s allies - new and old - joined the Clan. And, unbeknown to them, other beings joined as well. Dusk would have known sooner, had he paid attention to the stars. And perhaps he might have warned his Clan of the intruders - but he had tried that with the warnings of his daughter, had he not? And look how that turned out.

So Dusk shunned his calling. He ignored the warning in the stars… and he lost his Clan in return.

The Fair Folk came in spades. Before anyone could truly recognize the danger they were in, the Sidhe had taken over the Clan. Even a short-lived treaty did not save them. Nothing could, not against the immortal, non-draconians who declared the Willow their home, who stole their Clanmates and took their place. When Ashlesha died in the rageful battle, Dusk knew the Clan would never win - not against the Willow herself, whose faerie awoke to reclaim what was hers, what had been taken from her oh-so long ago by Ashlesha himself.

He took off, scattering with the rest of his old Clan as Aria called for retreat. As the Sidhe chased them away from the lair they had called home for so long, Dusk lost track of his Clanmates. He did not want to leave Sonata or Aria, or any of the others.

Dusk spent that first night alone, in a cave abandoned by Talonok. When he awoke, he was startled to see a female Ridgeback standing over him.
He could tell immediately that she was not a dragon, although she took the form of one. She had the same scent about her as many of the Fair Folk did, those who had taken over his Clan. A sweet, cloying scent… it sickened him.

With a growl, Dusk rose to his feet. He wasn’t sure if he could battle her and win, but he would not allow her to get the best of him, not if he could help it. But she smiled, and shook her head. “Do not fear,” she whispered. “The Willow has said we are to let you be.”

“Then let me be,” Dusk snorted.

She tilted her head towards him. “I am here for a favour. I - I was taken from my family before I could properly say farewell. I wish them to know that I am to reside with the Willow - they would like to know. And I would like you to tell them.”

Dusk narrowed his eyes, but his only response was a swish of his tail.

“Please. You were the only dragon I could find from the Clan - and the only one I trust. The wind told me you were safe; it asked me to let you know the stars, they miss you.”

Her words struck a cord within him. It was then that Dusk noticed the dragoness’ pale green eyes, a sign of Wind heritage. It was strange to think that these things, these - beings - could blend so easily in with the rest of Sorneith, take the shapes of dragons… Dusk repressed a shiver that itched its way beneath his mane.

“Fine, I shall go for you,” he muttered. As long as she would leave him alone afterward. He sensed her relief, and after she gave him directions, he was quick to leave. As he flew away, he could feel her green, green eyes stare after him… He flew faster.

Upon arriving at the Windswept Plateau, Dusk landed to find his bearings. He thought he knew which way he was going - until a tornado came blazing from the sky, sweeping out of nowhere. He nearly got caught in the storm, but he was able to escape in time. This threw him off course, though, and he wound up at the base of the Reedcleft Ascent. It was here where he met his saving grace.
31766397.png An Imperial appeared at the top of the cliff overlooking Dusk. The sanguine-and-crimson watched at Dusk with concern. “Rough landing?” A lovely scent drifted down on the wind, tasting cool and refreshing.

Dusk shook his fur out, irritated. “I’ve had worse,” he grumbled.

The Imperial chuckled, and leapt down to Dusk’s level. “Where you headed?” the Imperial asked lightly. The larger dragon had a lovely voice, melodious.

“Trying to find this Clan - I’ll just be on my way now,” Dusk said briskly.
He turned his back to the stranger and surveyed the land ahead. His nose crinkled. He didn’t recognize any of the landmarks of which the Ridgeback had spoken. But he didn’t want to stay near this bright dragon, so Dusk began moving.

The Imperial did not follow, which only unsettled Dusk more. But he refused to turn back. As Dusk picked his way down the foothills, he ran over the Ridgeback’s directions one more time. Hm, she said to look for a large ridge by the spinner beneath the Constellation of the Fungi. When the sun sets, I can check the stars to see which direction… As he unconsciously patted his bags, he stopped cold. His telescope was missing. But he swore he had it the previous day, when he had left the Viridian Labyrinth. And when he settled for the night on the northern shores of the Sea of a Thousand Currents. And when he flew over the Seas this morning…

Filled with a fury that had been building in him ever since he had lost his home, Dusk whipped around. He saw the Imperial sitting where he had left him, watching him with an lopsided grin. Despite the anger within, Dusk couldn’t help but notice how, from this angle, the sun caught the glimmer in his antlers like a stolen rose.

Dusk stormed back to the dragon, his fur standing on end. “You - did you steal my fieldtools?!”

The Imperial smirked. “Perhaps. You can have them back - how about over dinner?”

Dusk was taken aback; all of his anger drained at the sudden proposition. “I don’t even know your name. You don’t know mine.”

“Ah, who needs names? Besides, you like my smell, don’t you? Isn’t that enough?”

Dusk blinked. “Well, I’d also like to know your name. I’m Dusk.”

“Corin. C’mon, fluffy, I know a good place to graze at the western Steppes.”
