Biography

Atheria
The Amber-Caught
As hard and clear as the gemstone

Gifted by Latigirl on April 11, 2015! ♥

Atheria’s favourite story is a tragic tale, one that is reminiscent of her own lost kin. She sometimes recites the poetry with a sigh,

"And lucent amber-drops they laid thereon, years, say they, which the Daughters of the Sun, the Lord of Omens, shed for Phaethon slain, when by Eridanos' flood they mourned for him. These, for undying honour to his son, the God [Helios] made amber, precious in men's eyes."

-Quintus Smyrnaeus, Fall of Troy

When she was still a young Skydancer, she was close to her family. She lived with them in an underground den just outside of her birth Clan’s home lair. But one morn before she woke, her dreams were interrupted by a loud rumbling just outside of her family’s home. It did not give her a chance to react before a large poplar erupted from the freshly-turned earth outside their den, called upon by the whim of the Nature spirits.

The trunk of the tree and the stretching branches blocked the exit, trapping Atheria within the den while the bodies of her parents were struck by the growing tree limbs. The fast-growing tree speared their bodies through, and quickly swallowed them completely. Their limbs were support for branches; their wings the silhouette of the foliage; their eyes and mouth the gnarled holes of the woodwork; their tears seeping tree resin... Their dying screams still echo in Atheria’s mind to this day.

Her brothers, however, had survived - they had left the den for a pre-dawn hunt, and so they were free on the other side of the young tree. They tried to dig their sister out, but the tree was stubborn and would not release its prize.

The brothers abandoned Atheria to suffocate and starve with only the tree’s strangling roots and smothering leaves to accompany her. She did not weep and she did not rage. She only ran her feathers along the rough bark of the tree, greeting her parents’ killer and her new companion with the reverence she still held for all of Nature. And then she sat back and watched as the tree continued to grow.

Just as Atheria was ready to accept her death, the tree seemed to make up its mind about her. With the whisper of leaves in the wind, the trunk shifted slightly - and a narrow entrance appeared, allowing a hint of filtered sunshine into what had been her den, what was now a prison. She did not think it possible at first - a trick of the dim light, her mind unhinged - but it was true. She was free.

As she left her family’s ruined home, she turned to the tree and gave her thanks, hiding her sorrow. The tree had taken her family from her, but it had also given her life. Nature was cruel and mysterious in that sense, Atheria knew. She would not take this gift for granted. Just as she turned to leave, a branch swooped forward and tapped her shoulder. She jumped, startled - a flash of fear shocked her, until she realized something dangled from the tree’s branch. A piece of amber. She took it humbly, murmuring a quiet thank-you.

The tree bowed in acknowledgment, before righting itself. As it shifted, more amber seeped down from its branches, covering her from head to toe. She did not want to offend the tree, but she desperately wanted to claw the amber off of her feathers. By the time she managed to travel far enough away from the tree that it would not see her, the amber had hardened across her body, and she couldn’t get it off.

She now wears an amber pendant, the same farewell gift which the tree had given her. The tree which had ruined her family - her murderered parents, her brothers who abandoned her to the tree... The pendant is the same colour as her feather patterns, blending in with the amber that has marked itself across her body.

For the longest time afterward, she could never grow close to another dragon. The raw hurt from her family was too fresh - she never had a chance to heal. She traveled across the Viridian Labyrinth, never staying for too long in one place. Each new part of the forest gave her the jitters. Each tree reminded her of her parents’ killer, her savior. Finally, she came to the Clarus Clan. The dragons here lived beneath a large Willow, one which was the Charge of the Clan’s deputy. Which meant, Atheria realized, that Ashlesha controlled it. It was still a dangerous tree, in Atheria’s mind, but safer than elsewhere in the Labyrinth.

And although Atheria knew there were many tree-less lands in the vast expanse of Sorneith, Atheria could not bring herself to leave Nature. So it was here she settled.

In the Clan, Atheria was quiet and a good listener; she often planned ahead thoroughly before acting. She was known to be a diligent worker made of sturdy stuff. While she can often can see the misunderstandings and miscommunication in the Clan unfold from the get-go, she does not say anything. She merely feels that has no place interfering in the others' private lives, and she does not see the effort the others make to get to know her, because she in turn would never want to share her past, her life, with another. So she merely watched from a distance, observing but not acting.

However over time, Atheria grew to enjoy the company of others in the Clarus Clan, especially Neva. The two dragonesses are closer than any others, and although neither are interested in a physical partnership, their romance runs deep. Their relationship began as a casual and nonchalant thing, but their love has been building. They wrote long letters to one another, even though they lived in the same Clan. They would read each others’ letters as they cuddled together at the end of a long day. It was the most peace Atheria felt in a long time...

Despite this, Atheria still is forlorn. She has always been forlorn. A haunting aura surrounds her, and it is perhaps what has saved her life on countless occasions. It is as if the trees in the forest, the poplar when she was young and now even the Willow, has been watching out for her - and with the most recent developments in the Clarus Clan, it is probably true.

Atheria grew to work closely with her Clanmates in the past. Before Tzarel’s death, Atheria loved to join the Guardian on her worktrips. Together they would collect and organize precious gems and other like materials for the Clan. Sometimes Opalina would join them. Before the Fair Folk came to the Clan, the Skydancer considered Tzarel the closest thing to a friend. But then Tzarel and Opalina died in the ensuing battle, and the Clan was chased away from their home. Atheria wanted to follow the others, and she was close behind her partner Neva, trying to help the archivist with her books. But then the Willow’s fronds reached out, and grabbed Atheria’s ankle.

We like you, the leaves rustled and whispered, sending shivers down Atheria’s spine. We want you to stay with us, beloved amber-girl.

Atheria had no choice. The trees had chosen her, once again.
