A shadow glides through the water in the dark of night. A pair of glowing eyes shining through the thin mist rising from the surface of the water. Glancing quickly around he made for the shore, darting into the brush just before the patrols rounded the curve in their path.

Praying silently that he hadn't made too much noise he settled down to wait as they slowly meandered along their path. Patience was not fun, but it was necessary. As the patrols made their way farther down the path he crept across, coming up behind a small hut. Hearing the front door close and voices grow quieter he thanked the stars for his lucky timing and opened the rear door.

Ever so slowly he made his way to the desk, taking note of it's contents: a candle, silver pocket watch, some paper, ink and a very worn quill pen. It wasn't there. Glancing around he finally noticed it, shining in the candlelight. Grabbing it off the shelf he dashed out the back and fled to the water.

Relief washed over him as he glided towards home, and a smug grin crept up on his face as he heard the shouting start back at the camp. That will teach them.


It wasn't a war they wanted, but it was a war they got.
