Biography

Fear of the Void

WISE | COMFORTING | CALM

An egg laid outside the territory of the eleven elemental gods will not hatch: without their magic, soul never knits to body and the embryo inside withers and dies. Without an anchor, the little waiting spark of Mind that might one day have become a person slips away through the cracks in reality. Most are eaten by the pneumavores that lurk in the hungry Void outside, but a few--lucky or clever or both--survive and grow up to become predators themselves. Shade-touched, these lost souls lurk in the dreams and nightmares of dragonkind, feeding on their fears and growing fat.

The largest of them are the greater horrors, dream-beasts without an identity beyond their Names--the specific terror they draw strength from. Most horrors are little more than beasts, unconscious and unaware of the minds around them, though they ably ape the manner and speech of dragons they meet while dreaming. The larger they are, the more they resemble thinking beings, though the veneer of intelligence lies only skin-deep over a terrible animal cunning. Sleeping dragons caught and seduced by a wandering horror might never wake again, trapped beyond saving in their own nightmares--or worse, awaken possessed, without dreams or mind or reasoning of their own.

Empress has lived long enough for her personnality to stay dominant in VoidEmpress, though unfortunately it is that age that made her a perfect prey for the Fear of the Void. The mix between her former gentleness and the overwhelming emptiness of the Void makes her a very calm, and even comforting dragon. She will listen to any dragon's problems and will offer wise advice, but she's incapable of fully understanding and sympathizing with dragons, since she lost the ability to feel anything (though she can give the impression of compassion by mimicking Empress' attitude and expression from her memories).
The second Greater Horror to join the clan, Majick helped her in her transition from dragon to Horror and stayed quite close to her. She later took a liking to Madness, being the only one able to calm him.

Origin Story:

Empress was... old. She was tired. She had recurring nightmares about a shapeless Horror, about the Shade. She left her old clan and traveled the land, trying to somehow outrun the nightmares, until she stumbled upon a little Fae in the Tangled Woods. They gazed at each other for a little while until the Fae spoke.
"Good day to you, Madam. My name is Nightshade and I've claimed this part of the Woods as my own. Are you lost?
-I am always lost, my dear. I don't really know where I'm going. I'm just wandering across Sornieth, until I find a place to stay.
-Do you want to join my clan?"
Empress was shocked, to say the least.
"You don't know me. I could be dangerous. Why are you inviting me into your clan?
-You don't feel dangerous. And I usually have good intuition. So, do you wish to stay, Madam?
-... Lead the way, Milady. And call me Empress."

Empress was happy in the Chiroptera Cult. The dragons here were so diverse, and some were frankly weird, yet all of them were accepting. No questions were asked; Nightshade just introduced her to the others, and within a few minutes filled with basic explanations on the clan, they were talking to her like she had always been her. Yes, this felt like home.
Yet, she was still tired. And the nightmares still plagued her. She could feel something big coming, something terrifying, and she didn't know what to do. Until one day, Grimshaw called for an assembly of the whole clan with a young Arcane Spiral in tow. This Spiral gave her the chills. He somehow felt connected to her nightmares; he gave her the same feeling of dread. This intuition of her prove to be true, as the Spiral was actually a Greater Horror summoned by the Necromancer. Empress then knew she had to talk to Grimshaw about her nightmares.
So she waited for the end of his speech, and followed him until him, the Horror and her were alone.
"Grimshaw! Grimshaw, wait for me, I need your help.
-Empress? What is it?
-Nightmares. I've been having nightmares, for months. I'm so tired all the time. I can't stand it anymore. I feel like something horrible is going to happen soon. I feel... hunted by something. I see the Shade, infinite darkness, endless void every night in my dreams. And the feeling I get during these nightmares, it's the same that I'm feeling right now when looking at this... monster, here. Please, I don't understand what's happening to me, you've got to h-
-You will be my sister soon."
Grimshaw and Empress stared at Majick in shock. After a few seconds, Empress managed to ask in a stangled voice:
"What...?
-You are touched by the Shade. You will be like me soon. Well, not exactly, but... similar. I can feel it... You will be my sister soon."
Empress could only stare in horror. Meanwhile, Grimshaw was remembering everything he had read on Greater Horrors. Was it possible for a dragon to be consumed by the Shade in such a way? Surely it was, Majick wouldn't lie like that. What would happen to Empress? He needed to tell Nightshade. He needed to do some research, quickly.
"Empress, come with me, we have to tell Nightshade. I swear I'll do everything I can to help you. We will find a way."

But there was nothing they could do. After telling Nightshade, it was decided that Grimshaw and Athena would search for a way to help Empress, while Akantha, the Witch Doctor, would try to slow the Shade's contamination. Days and nights were spent reading everything about Greater Horrors and Consumption that the Librarian could find, but apparently once a dragon was chosen by the Shade, noone could save them. Devastated, the Chiroptera Cult dragons could only watch while their friend was consummed by nightmares.
Meanwhile, Majick was silently watching the dragons around him on their futile quest to stop the inevitable. He didn't understand them. He had told them there was nothing to be done. Yet, they still tried... It must have been because of that "caring" thing. Grimshaw had tried to explain it to him when he had asked why they were trying so hard to save the elder Imperial. But he couldn't understand. It's not like she was going to die. Consumption doesn't erase a dragon's memories and personality, it just changes them. Didn't they know that? ...Maybe they didn't.
"Grimshaw.
-...
-Grimshaw.
-What do you want? I'm trying to read here! We don't have much time left!
-It's useless.
-No it's not!
-She won't change much, you know?
-... What?
-Her memories are her own and not even us Horrors can take them. As is her personality. She's too old to disappear during the consumption. She will still be there, just not really herself. It's... hard to explain.
-..."
Grimshaw was stunned. He thought his friend would die and a Horror would take her place. But apparently the Horror would... "merge" with Empress. This was... slightly better than expected. He would have to tell Nightshade and the others. But Grimshaw was interrupted in his reflexion.
"It's time.
-What?
-My sister is awakening."
And Majick quickly left in the direction of Empress' resting place. Swearing, Grimshaw flew after him.
When they arrived at Empress' bed, everyone was already there. Akantha had felt the shift in Magic and alerted the others. Empress was still asleep, but she soon started to stir. Slowly, she opened her eyes, and stared at the Clan Leader.
"Empress, asked Nighshade, how are you feeling?
-... I'm not Empress anymore. I am the Fear of the Void, she answered, expressionless. Yet... I still feel like Empress... A bit? I don't know... I am confused..."
Nightshade nodded understandingly.
"How do you want to be called?
-... I still feel attached to my old name. Call me... Void Empress. Please.
-As you wish. Will you be staying with us?
-If I can. This place still feels like home. Though home is a difficult concept for me to understand, now... My instinct is telling me to stay here."

And so, everyone in the Chiroptera Cult accepted the Fear of the Void as one of their own, for she was not that different from the friend they used to know.

"If you look long enough into the void, the void begins to look back through you."
