Sentinel was born into a clan in fire territory. He wasn't yet grown when a strange dragon came to the lair. The dragon was huge and dark, with deep purple eyes marking him as being from the Shadow lands. He watched Sentinel as he played with his siblings, a cold gaze. The strange dragon spent a long time in discussion with the leaders of the clan, and Sentinels own parents. after a time, his mother came and told him to follow her. Only a hatchling, not even named yet, he obeyed. She led him far, far from the clan, carrying him when his small legs tired.
After a long time, she placed him on the ground near a road worn by merchants carts.
"Follow the road!" She ordered him tearfully. "FInd a clan to take you in. Grow up big, and stong, and learn to defend yourself."
She turned away. "Mama!" the nameless hatchling squealed "I want to come back with you!"
"NO!" She shouted, her voice a harsh sob "No! Never come abck here, you hear me? Leave! Stay far from here, and don't go to the shadow lands!"
His mother fled, and he never saw her again.

He was found there beside the road by a dragon named Peony, as she traveled to market to sell her herbs. She took him in, and for a time he lived with her, calling himself "Unnamed" while he tried to choose a name of his own. He never understood why his own clan abandoned him.

It was here he met one who would change him forever.

Walking through the passageways of the lair at Rabbithole Run, he heard laughter ringing down the halls. It was the most joyful, pure sound he had ever heard. Following it, he came to Camellia's room, and he peeked inside.
Within was a small fae with colours mirroring his own. She was beautiful. Draped with golden silks and gold armour, Bright orange feathers fluttering from her wings, she was twirling about and laughing with delight.

Suddenly she stopped, staring at him. Embarrassed, Nameless tried to flee, but Camellia, a Coatl who fancied herself leader of the small clan, told him to stay, and introduced the Fae as Exaltling, the Wandering Princess.

Camellia left, and the two began to talk. Shyly at first, but quickly developing confidence. As the days passed, they spent all their time together, and every day he fell more and more in love with her.
He ached to tell her, but Exaltling had told him of her plight, constantly fleeing from the Shadows who hunted her, and he decided that she had too much to worry about to ever feel for him. She went clan to clan all the time and had surely met a hundred like him. But he felt a fierce desire to protect her, and it boiled inside him.

Before long, it was time for Exaltling to leave again. She said her goodbyes to the tiny clan one by one, thanking them for their help. But then she came to Nameless, she stopped. The two stared at each other. Nameless held her gaze, trying to convey everything he felt in one look. He hated to lose her. As he watched, her expression shifted. Surprise flashed across her face as she met his eyes. As quickly as the look had appeared, it was replaced by a look that mirrored his own, a deep adoration, although hers was tinged by the fear that never quite left her eyes.
Nameless smiled, understanding. "Dahlia?" He said suddenly, not breaking the eye contact that held the Princess immobile "What is a word for one who guards and protects, whose only desire is that their charge remain safe, free, the way they deserve?"
"Hmm." Dahlia said thoughtfully "A Sentinel, perhaps?"
"Thank you." he said, rather huskily "My name will be Sentinel. Princess?" he asked her gently, and she seemed to snap back to reality. "May I come with you, when you go?"
"Yes!" She exclaimed loudly, grinning sheepishly as she realized the eagerness in her voice. He smiled back.
Each knew without saying how the other felt.
Together, they walked into the forest.

A squarely built imperial met the princess and Sentinel at the edge of the clan’s territory. With him was a white dove and a young male fae. The fae had a bundle of clothing with him. The imperial spoke softly. “I am Taino of the Dragon Sage clan, and we will protect you two while you are with us. Shed your current disguise Exaltling. Young Sethiuth has agreed to be your decoy. I’m sorry Sentinel upon such sort notice we were unable to arrange a decoy for you.”

Exaltling quickly shed her disguise, putting on the new one provided while Sethiuth put on the outfit she’d been wearing. Sentinel also received and outfit to wear. While the pair of faes and mirror were changing, Taino had sent the white dove off to let the Rabbithole Run know of Exaltling’s safe arrival. Once the pair were done changing Taino nodded. “That will have to do. Sethiuth you know your job. If you get in trouble contact Stahli through the water. He and Lorette have been assigned as your protection detail.”

Sethiuth gave a sharp nod in understanding. “It’s nice to meet you princess and Sentinel. May Lady Gladekeeper’s branches shelter you well.” He said before taking flight in the direction Exaltling had come from. As Sethiuth took off, Taino led Exaltling and Sentinel deeper into the clan’s territory.

“As I understand it, the various clans have been teaching you what you’ll need to know to keep ahead of your enemies? Normally it’d be Stahli and Lorette who’d guide your training, but Sethiuth is so young, he’s only just reached maturity so they felt he needed their protection. As such I have volunteered to take you under my wing, however feel free to ask any of the clan for additional assistance.”

With that Taino left the two refugees alone to settle.

Exaltling and Sentinel worked hard under Taino’s tutelage and their bond grew. The imperial quickly noticed that Sentinel would spend more time focused on protecting Exaltling than he did on the various mire creatures Taino found for them to practice their skills against. With this in mind he encouraged Sentinel to speak to Burohn and with the snapper’s guidance Sentinel took up the art of protection and defence.

One day when the pair turned up for training Taino shook his head. “Training may be well and good, and yes it may give you an edge against your enemies but there are other things that are just as important. This week is the Greenskeeper’s Gathering, take this time to rest and relax, the Gladekeeper watches over you and time spent reflecting on things will do you far more good than hours in the mire.” With this blessing, Taino pushed the two towards the heart of the Labyrinth where all of the nature clans were celebrating their festival.

While exploring the Labyrinth and the events the nature flight had put on, Exaltling and Sentinel’s bond with one another grew tighter and tighter, until one time while they were exploring their feelings for one another in a secluded glade, they grew carried away and, well one thing led to another and they ended up with a clutch of three eggs.
3healthy_0dead.png
The pair of were mixed emotions---these eggs represented the love between the two of them, but by bringing those eggs into existence, they poor children would face the same life they did, of always being hunted. While Exaltling guarded the nest, Sentinel went to let their hosts know they’d be staying longer than expected before quickly returning to his love’s side. “I didn’t see Taino but Kyla congratulated us and said that nature would ensure our children are safe."

The clutch was in the process of hatching when a call of alarm filled the air. “Sethiuth’s been badly injured, our guests must flee... Their enemies are close.” This shocking news spurred the clan into action.
The proud parents and the hatching nest was soon surrounded by Taino, Gaelen , Burohn, Honor and Valor who were acting as protection. The injured Sethiuth was being treated by Kyla the clan matriarch while Stahli and Lorette prepared the rest of the clan to defend the territory.

“We must flee.” Exaltling looked at Sentinel, grief and anger at those who hunter her--hunted them. The mirror helped the last hatchling out of the shell before turning to his mate, the same emotions she felt were reflected in his own eyes, the emotions so strong he couldn’t form words at that moment.

“Aye, I know you planned to travel together a family,” Taino spoke softly, “however, it would be best for you to split up and take different routes to your next destination.” He looked at the hatchlings sadly. “Unfortunately these young ones are too young to make the journey with you. We will protect them and find them good homes. When it safe, word will reach you.”

There was little that could be said about that. As much as Exaltling and Sentinel hated it, their family must be split. They gave their hatchlings a fierce hug and whispered their hopes and wishes into their ears before they took to the sky. One last look to their children showed the hatchlings being bundled up and prepared for a journey. As Exaltling and Sentinel reached the end of the Dragon Sage Clan’s territory, they embraced before separating, each with the heaviest of hearts.

What happened in those hidden months? The time lost between safety and freedom? What happened in those secret times, when no friend fostered you nor family sustain you? You hid in the spaces of sentences, in the gaps between words, you hid in the darkest of Forrests and the quietest bowers.

Once you were settled. You hid and you starved, you feasted your mind on insanity and allowed your bones to hollow - but not for long. In a flash, you were gone.

Sentinel stumbled through the forest, looking for the familiar clan he had once called his home. But it was gone. Nothing but trampled earth and scorch marks remained. What horrors happened here, to drive his peaceful family away? He set off, a new fire in his heart and a growl in his throat.

Eventually he learned, his clan had suffered a great tragedy, and had moved to Dragonhome, where they were happy. He visited, he saw the fresh hope and the peace, and everyone working together as a family. He knew he'd always be welcome here, but for now, he couldn't stay. He was still hunted, and the Princess was still out there. He moved on swiftly.

The brush crackled under Sentinel’s claws and he froze for a moment eyes flickering around in all directions warily. It had been a rough passage from Dragonhome and circumstances forced him to move into the Tangled Wood, he’d been warned long ago not to go near, but every other way to the Viridian Labyrinth seemed to be blocked. There was another rustle and a cottontail rabbit burst from the overgrowth. Sentinel pounced on it and quickly devoured it, forever thankful to the clans who previously sheltered him for showing him the ways of the hunt so he wouldn’t starve before he found his way back to his beloved’s side.

He moved with purpose through the Tangled Wood remembering the map he’d seen in one of his previous havens and figured that he was somewhere in the Foxfire Bramble. Every step he took brought him closer to his destination and he prowled his way through the thorns not paying attention as they tore at his scales. Every hour that passed made Sentinel more and more aware of a tingle at his back and he would turn every now and again to see if something was following, but he never saw a thing except the endless expanse of the dark shadowlands.

Finally he reached the shore and he could nearly breathe the air of the Viridian Labyrinth, the greens and bright sunlight he could see just beyond the water taunted him. He wasn’t sure he’d be able to make the swim himself and his wings wouldn’t carry him that far. The trees near the shore were too scrawny to make a proper raft. He glared at the other shore, so close to his goal, but it may as well be across Sornieth.

“Is there something that you’re searching for in the twists of the Viridian Labyrinth?”

Sentinel’s travels took him far and wide, and each new home he found himself in, he ached for the sight of his Princess more and more. His children were all scattered to the corners of the Viridian Labyrinth and he had no way of knowing where or who they were with. Were the caught by the Shadows that plagued their clan? Were they being taken care of by their host families? He could only beg the Gladekeeper that she keep her watchful eye on them.

His legs and wings burned with pain. Dragonhome was quite the distance from the Glades, and even still he went deeper into the Wilds, towards the ever constant tree that grew so large he could see it no matter where he went. He wanted to reach it and begin planning his next move. He was sure that if he got high enough on the twisting, gnarled branches, he could see the best route to take.

After leaving Clan Djent, Sentinel couldn’t escape the worry that nipped at his heels as he thought about the rumors he’d heard about the fate of the Edge of the Wyld clan. He knew he should stay away, he would just bring more misfortune and death if he returned, but it haunted his dreams. He’d heard the conflicts in the hall of Edge of the Wyld Clan and the echoes of Sangoshou’s proud declaration that it would take “some truly extraordinary beings” to take a half mile of their territory or a room in the keep. He remembered hearing the fighting beyond the doors of the chamber Exaltling and the violet spiral who’d been shredded by the Mirror guardians Anshoku and Kira. He also could remember fleeing into the night with Farai and Arashi covering them with illusions as he fled leaving his children and his bonded behind.

Sentinel couldn’t recall a night in the past several weeks he didn’t awaken from nightmares. Nightmares of what had happened to the Clan of the Wyld, visions of bloodied bodies of those he’d come to know while he was there that transformed into the body of his beloved then his children and back around in another cycle. He turned his eyes firmly in the direction of the waterfalls at the edge of the Viridian Labyrinth. He needed to lay at least one of those worries to rest or at least find out the extent of what happened. He wouldn’t actually have to venture into the keep of the Edge of the Wyld Clan, he just needed to see, to know that at least some of those he knew still lived or find out the rumors were wildly exaggerated and everyone was fine.

Just a peek.

He knew he was near the boundary that led into the Edge of the Wyld Clan’s expansive territory, but before he could ascertain his location there was a hiss and a tangled net of vines dropped over him and a Mirror pounced on him, face hidden behind the brown birdskull mask like the one he himself wore. Claws dug into his hide through the net and his breath hissed out.

“Fall back, Legacy.”

The order was spoken in a deep voice and Sentinel’s fire eyes rested on the large Wildclaw that was glaring at the small Mirror on his back.

“Death now, questions later…” the Mirror growled.

“Get off, Legacy.”

The words were repeated again much more firmly and another hiss escaped from Sentinel as the other Mirror’s claws dug into his back hard in protest before his assailant leapt away taking chunks of his hide and the net with her.

Sentinel could only guess the Wildclaw was eyeing the Mirror that attacked him for the long moment it took before it approached the net that was still tangled around him. “Please forgive her, stranger, she only remembers death from strangers. Identify yourself.”

The order came as the Wildclaw managed to untangle the net just enough to let Sentinel’s head free so he could look around. His breath caught as he realized that the Mirror in the mask shared a familiar coloring with another in his memory. He dragged his attention away from her and to the Wildclaw who was eyeing him expectantly.

“Where am I?” he rasped.

“I asked a question first,” the Wildclaw said amicably. “Answer mine and I’ll answer yours.”

“I need to know if this area still belongs to the Edge of the Wyld Clan…” Sentinel could almost hear the plea in his own voice and swore silently at himself.

The Wildclaw cocked his head and then leaned in closer. “By the Gladelady’s beard, you’re Sentinel!”

“Gladelady’s…beard…” Sentinel choked on the words.

A guilty look flashed across the Wildclaw’s face. “Don’t tell Faewyld I said that, please? He hates the ‘new-fangled curses’ made up by the youngers, but who wants to swear by the Behemoth’s trunk all the time…”

With a start, Sentinel realized that the Wildclaw was actually very young for all he carried himself like a seasoned warrior. “Who are you? I don’t recognize you…”

“Are you Sentinel?” the Wildclaw repeated.

“And if I am?” he asked.

“Congratulations, Legacy, you just tore up your dad’s hide…” the other said.

“You lie.”

The words were hissed out and the Mirror female prowled around the net and Sentinel watched her warily. Her green eyes named her of a Nature nest, but she had an air that was almost feral.

“Nope, take a look at him closer. Fire eyes, Slate, silver, and swamp coloration and he jumps at shadows worse than anyone else I’ve ever seen...”

“I do not,” Sentinel said irritably.
“If he is, let him out,” the Mirror snapped.

“Sure thing,” the Wildclaw said.

The net was loosened and Sentinel shook it off and hissed as the wounds on his back protested. “Let me get Willow, she’ll take care of those wounds for you,” the Wildclaw said. “Legacy try not to kill him while my back’s turned.”

The Mirror snarled something that Sentinel was pretty sure he was glad he couldn’t make out and the Wildclaw vanished back into the woods. “Are you really Sentinel?”

Sentinel’s orange eyes turned to the female. She’d shoved the mask up onto the top of her head and Sentinel’s eyes widened. “Yes…I am…” he said slowly.

“Xiuhcoatl and Lodestar told me all about you,” she said. “They said that the evil ones that attacked the Edge of the Wyld clan and killed hatchlings and civilians indiscriminately were after you and Mother…”

Sentinel’s breath caught and he rose up slowly, approaching the young Mirror. Legacy hissed and arched her back almost like one of the cats in the jungle he’d gotten lost in at some point and he barely stifled the chuckle. She took several steps back and finally Sentinel paused. “I have never actually been able to see any of my children…” he said slowly.

“I’m here, you can see me, now back off,” Legacy growled. “Haven’t you caused enough trouble for the Edge of the Wyld? Why are you back?”

Sentinel flinched back at her words. “I just wanted to know that everyone was okay,” he said quietly. “They said that half the clan was killed.”

“Closer to a third actually.”

The cheerful voice preceded the arrival of the male Wildclaw from earlier and an equally young Skydancer. “Warden says you’re hurt,” the Skydancer said softly. “Allow me to tend your wounds and we’ll tell you what happened.”

“You can tell him whatever you want. I’m scouting,” Legacy spat and bounded into the underbrush with almost no sound.

“I—”

“Forgive her,” the Skydancer that Sentinel assumed was the Willow the Wildclaw said he was going to get said. “Her first memories are of terror and violence. She saw Xiuhcoatl’s eye ripped from its socket and his wings shredded by the Shadow Hunter that led the others into the Keep and it’s stuck with her since then.”

“Is he…” Sentinel trailed off.

“Lodestar taught me all the healing I know, she managed to pull Xiuhcoatl from the edge. She’s probably one of the best currently in the clan though I heard that Pumpkin was better,” Willow said.

“How many died?” Sentinel asked softly.

“A lot,” Warden said. “Anshoku and Kira were killed while you were spirited away by Farai and Arashi and many others lost their life as well. Civilians, children…they didn’t differentiate.”

“Did…did you see it too?” Sentinel asked, he wracked his memories trying to figure out if Warden had been one of the youngsters.

“I came after,” Warden said answering Sentinel’s unspoken question. “So did Willow. Most of what we know comes from Tyr. He teaches those who are going into the Coliseum to do battle since Haran retired.”

“Haran…retired?” Sentinel asked slowly.

Warden nodded and Sentinel almost whimpered as something was smeared over the burning wounds in his back. “Apologies, Legacy’s claws are tipped with poison,” Willow said. “It’s easily remedied, but it’s not pleasant.”

“Haran usually just goes to the Coliseum with Sangoshou and Obsidian if we need materials or food. Sometimes she’ll take younglings to the Kelp Beds and acclimate them to battle…like she did Legacy and me, but only to a certain point then she stops,” Warden said. “She no longer teaches.”

“Why?” Sentinel questioned.

“Well, um…” Warden trailed off.

“The one who is suspected of betraying the clan was Haran’s protégé,” Willow murmured, wrapping bandages around Sentinel deftly. “She taught him everything he used to kill some of those most precious to her. She fears training another full-fledged warrior and she has reduced herself to taking up the hunting and gathering that Emmer used to do.”

“Emmer and Pumpkin are both gone?” Sentinel asked, tears threatened to take his voice. “Kinya must hate me now…”

“Kinya places the blame squarely where it belongs,” Willow said, “at the feet of the one who betrayed the clan. She speaks fondly of you and the one called Exaltling.”

There was a rustle in the bushes and Willow’s head snapped up. “Warden…”

“Enemies approach.”

The humor that characterized the voice of the Wildclaw was suddenly gone and Legacy burst from the brush with a shriek and whirled to face the enemy that appeared.

Sentinel forced himself to his feet, his eyes on his daughter who was in dire straits as she was attacked by the two that escaped Warden’s claws.

“Wait, you mustn’t…” Willow began.

“I am a protector. I will not let them be harmed.”

With that Sentinel threw himself into the battle, ignoring the way his wounds screamed.

After the battle, Willow administered to their wounds and Warden glanced at him. “To answer your question from a while ago, you are in the lands of the Edge of the Wyld clan, but our patrols can’t range quite as far as they used to yet. Faewyld and others are recruiting when they can, but there’s only so much they can do and keep the clan safe. It’s going to be a long journey back to the keep. Do you wish to go?”

“Yes, please,” Sentinel said softly.

Warden nodded and Legacy growled something beneath her breath. “I’ll scout ahead,” the young Mirror announced and vanished.

As promised the journey back to the cave system the Edge of the Wyld clan claimed to be their own was long and difficult. Sentinel quickly found that he couldn’t just guard Warden and Legacy as he had others before, the two were too hot-headed and jumped into battle without thought. He learned to Sear his enemies and heal as well as guard them, thankful more than once for Willow’s gentle care after the battle.

Finally they reached the familiar waterfall that shielded the entrance to the cave system and as before Tsukiyo and Hinata blocked their progress. Sentinel was glad to see the sisters still alive and they greeted him as an old friend, welcoming him back into their keep. Warden and Legacy were shooed off to the infirmary by Willow and the Skydancer led him down a familiar hall to the office where the Clan Head of Edge of the Wyld took care of her work.

“Welcome back Sentinel.”

The mirror jumped as the familiar form of Kinya hovered in the air above him. “I…” he began suddenly overwhelmed by the guilt that he’d been responsible for the death of the Clan Leader’s siblings and so many more.

“The fault is not yours, Sentinel,” Kinya said as if reading his mind and fluttered down to the floor to land.

She looked up at him with the familiar calm green gaze that soothed Sentinel’s mind a bit. “Your other children are alive and well though they were sent to other clans to maintain their safety. Legacy refused to leave Xiuhcoatl and Lodestar and thus she remains here,” Kinya informed him gravely.

She took to the air again, but this time stopped at about Sentinel’s eye level. “Never think you are not welcome here, Sentinel,” she said. “You and your beloved can always rest your wings here now and forever. We have learned from our arrogance against the Shadow Hunters. While the deaths of our clan members have cut us to the bone, we have figured out how to adapt and change as our circumstances warrant—something you would know well I think, you and your beloved.”

There was a gentleness in Kinya’s voice and Sentinel felt his own grief well up as he thought of all of those he’d come to care for and had to leave. The little Fae landed and did the best that she could to provide a shoulder for the much bigger dragon. In retrospect, Sentinel supposed it would have looked a bit comical to see a mirror crying into a Fae’s shoulder, but for that moment he didn’t care.

When he’d recovered, Kinya gave him a smile, her fins fluttering. “You are welcome to stay as long as you would like, Sentinel,” she said.

“I will leave tomorrow,” Sentinel said quietly. “I just…”

He trailed off and Kinya nodded in understanding and took to the air again. “Then shall we go to the Great Hall, Frosty is ruling the table for this week while Kamelot broods over his nest with Nightwish,” Kinya said. “He’s got some new stories to tell.”

Sentinel couldn’t help but smile and gave the Fae a grateful look. “Thank you.”

Tomorrow he would leave again and look for his beloved. He would have news of their daughter, Legacy, and the warrior she was becoming and he’d be able to tell her the truth of what happened with the Edge of the Wyld clan.
For tonight, however, he would enjoy the warmth of the clan’s Great Hall and the stories that the Tundra would tell and he would sleep knowing at least part of his nightmares were put to rest.
