Biography

Skei
PLEASE DON'T EXALT

Uh-oh, looks like this little hydrangea-looking bat wandered a little too far from her lair (Ninette, #111134), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Skei was born a tiny baby bat-like creature, flapping her wings and yawning like an idiot. Ever since her birth, she felt like great things were destined to happen in her life. Her father couldn't care less but her mother nodded and agreed whenever Skei would tell her about her big dreams of seeing the world with her own eyes and living adventures that would give her goosebumps if she could feel them. But alas, she yapped and yapped about these things destined for her and yet her life always felt the same; until one day her wise mother said: "If you want to travel so much, why don't you get off your lazy tail and JUST DO IT?" It was Skei's turn to nod in agreement. Her mother's kind words were all the encouragement she needed. She flapped her weird-looking wings, said her goodbyes and off she went, knowing that one day, she would return even wiser than her mother. "That'll show her!"

Skei arrived together with Lunar in the Blacksand Annex. They were welcomed in the territory of this proud and noble clan.
While she was stunned by the gorgeous view and looking at the obsidian coastline, the flowing lava and the scalding steam-mist at the water's edge. Suddenly a weird looking Mirror lady tried to get her attention.

It took a few moments until she recognized that she was talking to her at a rapid speed that made it hard to understand. After three attempts Skei figured out that the name of this high-speed-talking Mirror is Alecia and that she is an entertainer that would like to hear Skeis story.

Skei liked Alecia and they spend nearly the whole time talking. When Skei decided to leave and travel on Alecia took off her Teardrop Lapis Lazuli Earrings and gave them to her.

Skei once again travelled with Lunar, mostly because his size allowed for her to occasionally take a nap on top of him as he flew. Together they stumbled upon the entrance of Clan Aequorentis, just as the festivities for Trickmurk Circus started. She became particularly close to Veles, a kindly old snapper who recorded her more exciting stories to pass on to the future hatchlings. But whilst Lunar decided to stay for the duration of the festival, Skei was eager to set off again and explore more of Sornieth, so she left without him.

Skei next arrived in a shadow clan that was in the middle of Trickmurk celebrations. She observed for a while, taking in the sights and colorful, often trickily crafted offerings to the Shadowbinder, but soon she was ready to leave once more. Before going, some of the hatchlings of the clan offered her a drawing of her likeness.

One is never as lonely as when one hits the road without company. She hadn't noticed the dragon-sized void Lunar had left behind until after she'd departed from the shadow clan, and once wandering again, the sense of loneliness came creeping like a gradual shadow. Oh, true, she'd cross the path of other wanderers every now and then, but none of them stayed for much longer than a skewer over a campfire would last.

After months of keeping only her familiar for company, she came upon a small bench in the middle of nowhere within the borders of Light Flight. There, a lonely, but glimmering, little pearlcatcher was sitting, turning her pearl over in her hands, staring intently at the orb as if she expected it to talk to her. Fearing no social stigmas anymore, Skei tiptoed over and sat next to the girl.

At first, she was too obsessed with her pearl to notice she had gotten company - Skei wasn't offended, she'd expected nothing less from a pearlcatcher. Once she did notice her, however, she skipped a little and then smiled.

"I know my pearl is supposed to hold all my memories," she said as she lifted the iridescent orb towards Skei, "I'm trying to find out how to get them back. They are in there, but not in me, and it's very frustrating."

"You've got amnesia?" guessed Skei, having picked up the phrase from one of the clans she'd passed through.

"I think so, yes," the pearlcatcher frowned and lowered the pearl, staring at it some more, then tryingly licking it, ending with a grimace and her tongue out, "definitely not the way," she noted and rubbed her snout with the back of her paw, "don't know what it tasted like, but definitively not memories."

"What's your name? Mine's Skei," perhaps changing topics was a better idea. The pearlcatcher smiled sweetly.

"Marine. It says so here," she lifted a note and gave it to Skei, "it's a letter. From me. Or at least, I think it's from me... unless I'm not that person anymore. I might not be that person anymore if what's there is correct. In which case, maybe I can't call myself Marine anymore. But I am sure it at least used to be my name." Skei frowned and leant in close to the paper, humming a bit.

"Where's the other half?" she finally asked, flipping the note over.

"I don't know. I think I didn't get around to writing it. Awkward, isn't it? I think that was supposed to be the important part, and somehow I lost all my memories before I got there," she turned her face upwards, "Hey, at least I chose a very nice day to lose my mind, not a cloud as far as the sky can stretch."

"Does sound like you're better off without those memories," Skei noted as she read over the note again.

"Not really. You don't know what you have until you lose it - or at least not what it meant. Now I have no idea who I am anymore, I don't even know what I'm good or bad at, or what I like to eat and drink. I haven't even been able to decide where to travel, because I don't know where I want to go, what I want to see, or what there even is to see." Skei's expression softened a little at that;

"Why don't you come travel with me? I'll keep you safe." And so, it was settled.

As her travels carried her even farther, she felt exhausted. She needed to touch down and rest. As her wings were about to give out on her, she spotted a small clearing in the middle of a bone yard. She floated down towards the clearing and was welcomed almost immediately by a young Fae and six hatchlings. The Fae told her about where she landed and told her she was welcomed for as long as she wished. Skei was brought to a small hut and begin to unpack what little she had. The sun set and Skei drifted to sleep with the setting sun.

The next morning she woke up very refreshed and alert. She went outside and wandered the lair. She noticed a guardian help a tundra take care of her sick hatchling, a ridgeback train a group of male dragons, and two skydancers talking over food. Skei then wandered into a small hut with paint splatters covering the entrance way. Inside was a Fae teaching a handful of hatchlings how to hold a paintbrush. Once her lesson was done, she sent them off to paint whatever was on their mind. Skei walked around and watch as the dragons painted such fun and colorful ideas. "Hi, I'm Hal," a small voice whispered. Skei looked up to see the teacher fae. Skei smiled and replied, "Hello, I'm Skei. Are you the art teacher here?" She nodded. The two talked for a while about the art room and what Hal's plans were. Hal invited Skei to join the class tomorrow. Skei accepted then slipped back through the door.

The next day, Skei hopped over to the art hut. She was welcomed in by Hal. She introduced Skei then instructed everyone to head to their seats. Hal then explained to the hatchlings how to draw a portrait of a dragon. Skei then realized she was the model. Hal worked and talked as the hatchlings struggled to draw Skei portrait. At the end of the lesson, Hal thanked Skei for being a great model and handed her the piece she drew. Skei thanked her and walked out. Skei felt it was time once again to fly to a new land. She walked back into her temporary hut and found a beautiful teardrop shaped necklace and note. It read, "Thank you for being so helpful with the hatchlings. You are always welcomed back. -Benji" With that, she put the necklace on, packed her stuff, and flew off.

Inspired by the creativity of the previous clans she had met, Skei decided to brave rumours and enter the Starwood Strand at night, taking a sturdy length of rope with her to prevent herself from being lost.

It all went well at first. The nocturne marveled at the beauty of the woods and its creatures, even finding a few colonies of wild fae to talk with. As the night approached late hours, however, the chirps and rustles in the trees slowly faded, leaving just the night-sky canopy and eerie silence. It was when Skei turned around that she realized her rope had came loose hours ago and was now trailing behind her. Panicking, she retraced her steps the best she could, only to find herself stuck amongst unfamiliar trees. Disregarding the rule to stop and wait for the morning when lost, Skei decided to walk around until she found something.

In the small hours of the night, the nocturne finally passed out from weariness, only to wake up in a well-furnished den afterwards. It turned out that a passing gatherer from a local clan found her near the edge of the lair and brought her inside. For the following weeks, Skei helped out with gathering, learning some new survival techniques and Arcane culture before finally leaving Starwood Strand for her next misadventure.

After carefully skirting the scarred wasteland, Skei was originally travelling for the Windswept Plateau. A strong gust of wind blew her off course, and she was forced to land on the outskirts of the Shifting Expanse, missing the Sea of a Thousand Currents and the hot flames of the Ashfall Waste. Night was closing fast, however, so Skei quickly sought shelter for the night. After wandering in the outregions of the Highland Scrub, Skei ran into Yohn, out on a walk through the Scrub. Being much larger than her, he gave her shelter for the night, keeping the dangerous creatures that prowled the Shifting Expanse at bay until morning. In the morning, he explained to her the natures of his walks, and of the clan he leads in the Carrion Canyon. He invited her to come back with him to rest, recuperate, and may stay awhile with his clan.

Skei agreed after some thought, and the pair set out for the Canyon. Yohn walked most of the way, but took to the air as they neared the canyon wall. Flying through the middle of the canyon, he led Skei to a grouping of excavated caves in the canyon's wall. Yohn was welcomed warmly back, and Skei was promptly brought into one of the back caves to be washed, fed, and inspected. She was cleaned and fed well, and soon was brought to a small cave of her own, to rest. After a day or so of sleep, she began to explore the clan.

Piles of weapons and magical tomes were stored in many of the caves for an upcoming battle, but for what Skei was not sure. A large group of Imperials were always hard at work studying or training, so she thought it would be best to leave them alone. The clan was nice and quiet, though, when the Imperials were resting or visiting with the other clanmates, but Skei still longed for adventure. After a couple months of residing within Yohn's clan, she desired to set out again. Yohn gave her a pair of goggles to protect her eyes from the harsh sand of the Shifting Expanse, and after packing some food and waterskins she was on her way again.

Dragonation

Skei awoke slowly. As her eyes fluttered open, they found only glimmering whiteness. After a moment, staring up at the bright white surface, she realized it was snow. Sitting up, she turned about in the small cave-like shelter. Her bag lay on the floor beside the small entrance carved low into the wall behind her. She pushed it through the hole before wiggling through herself. Outside, she found an empty expanse of snow and ice...and a small dragon's footprints leading away from the exit. She put on her bag and, curious, followed the diminutive tracks. They went on for a several feet, before abruptly stopping, the last one half erased by wind and snow.

Hmm. How odd. Well, who ever this was, they must have saved my life. Skei looked around at the frigid wasteland, a shiver slowly racking her body. I don't even remember coming here. Shaking herself, she quickly took off, the powdery snow swirling like silvery dust around her beating wings.

Ocean.
What seemed like miles and miles, Skei flew in search of land. Although not nearly as cold as the Southern Icefield, the freezing December winds chilled her to the bone. Her wings grew tired, and she felt weak. Then, as if a blessing from the Arcanist himself, she spotted land.

The landform was aglow with light, the radiance nearly blinding her after watching blue on blue for so long. Gliding down, she reached the soft, lime grasses of the Sunbeam Ruins. Skei felt the warmth of the sun on her scales, spreading out to the skin of her once-frigid wings. Her mind off the past chill, she felt another feeling: She was dead tired from all that flying. Comfortable in the soft grass, Skei gave a yawn and quickly dozed off.

Awakening, the blue nocturne was startled by the sight of a grey and pink wildclaw above her. Skei shot up and quickly scooted backwards, unfamiliar of her surroundings. The wildclaw was adorned with pink silks, and her wings shiny and slightly transparent. With each breath the corners of their mouth leaked a thick smoke, transitioning from blue to pink, then back to blue once more. Her facial features were soft and maternal, however her eyes were an intense yellow.

The wildclaw spoke in a sweet, gentle voice, "Do not be afraid, child. You are safe here."

Skei looked around. The walls were old and crumbly, and a thick tree marked the center of the room. The truck went beyond the ceiling, which consisted solely of the tree's out-stretched branches and leaves. Cautious at first, Skei told her story to the grey wildclaw. The dragon, who Skei had learned was named Jesi, listened closely with interest, her eyes shining. When she had finished, the wildclaw stood up and made her way over to a chest, in which she opened and started to rummage through the contents.

"Ah, a brave, adventurous child you are," She said, "but as the air becomes colder, perhaps this may be of use to you?"

Jesi picked up a thick, woolen scarf. She returned to the blue nocturne and carefully draped the warm fabric around their neck. Stepping back, the wildclaw admired Skei and her new scarf, smiling still.

"Although our lair's leaders are currently out, I am certain they would not mind a visitor. Rest here as long as you would like," Then, with a giggle she added, "but, I suppose, a restless soul such as you may not stay for long."

Flying above the Reedcleft Ascent was as easy as a breeze, as one was also blowing. Skei peacefully glided above the vast grassy plains, not really hungry, but not minding if a stray butterfly flew into her mouth. Underneath, many dragons, mostly younglings, tried out their best in flying for the first time, while the more experienced one's would run over to the edge of the cliffs and throw themselves into the nothingness, only to skillfully pick up the same breeze that carried Skei around.

The scarf she got was tightly tied in a knot, but she felt something else slipping; the pendant she got some time ago seemed to have loosened. She stopped mid-air to try and tighten it up, but her claws were too long for a thin string like that, and unfortunately, the pendant dropped deep down to the ground. Wasting no time, she plunged down to the ground to grab it, but before reaching it, stopped again in mid-air. For on the ground beneath her were three dragons, and there was something off looking about them.

One was an intricately marked female in clothes marking those coming from the vast sands, but her red eyes revealed her as a Plague dragon. Those eyes stared at Skei, unblinking and the dragon itself, unmoving, while the pearl she held in between her paws glowed a bloodred color. Skei didn't like her fur, for it had spots, bright red spots that looked like thousand Plague eyes.
Next to her was a female Tundra, with her snout covered. This one's eyes were hidden by the hood she wore, yet there was a strong scent of blood emanating from her, and her posture seemed quite... Unfriendly. Last one was another Tundra girl, covered in bloody bandages that were tied across her face and biggest part of her body. The girl seemed sickly, and not just because of the bandages; her fur was tangled and hanged off her like drapes, barely hiding her thin, too thin to be healthy, body.

The strange group stared at Skei, all but the last, sickly girl, who took to looking at the ground. And as luck would have it, the pendant fell right next to the hooded Tundra. Skei stared back at them for a few moments before quietly pleading: "...Could I have that back? It's mine, you know."
The Pearlcatcher stayed silent, unmoving, not blinking. The first Tundra replied by stepping onto the pendant with her foot, as if she's saying "No.". The sickly young girl looked at the two next to her with fear, as if she'd want to say something but is afraid of being beaten or something. Perhaps that was what happened, Skei thought. These three sure were an unpleasant sight and their behavior sent chills down her spine, yet no one around seemed to mind them or pay any attention to them.

"Please?", she tried once again, but to no avail. The pendant was pushed aside to the Pearlcatcher, who finally moved, grabbing it from the ground and letting it dangle from her arm. The pendant jingled against the pearl she held, and the sound it made was even more unpleasant. Perhaps it was just the psychological effect of the three's stares and behavior, but when the Tundra who refused to return it stomped her foot again, as if trying to chase off a small animal, Skei felt she was better off leaving, before something terrible happens. Unfortunately for her, nobody else seemed to pay any mind to them or the trouble she was going through, trying to get back what was rightfully hers. And she had a feeling that nobody would help her even if she asked... Not sure why did she think like that, she just did.

Saddened by the loss and angry at the three for stealing from her, she spat out a few nasty words at them, calling them thieves and the likes, but they weren't fazed. On the contrary, the Pearlcatcher smiled slyly at her anger and remained silent.

Skei was thrilled when she reached the border, meaning she'll be leaving this forsaken place. This wasn't what she heard of the Wind clans, but times obviously changed. Little did she know that the Pearlcatcher was an illusionist and that she fell in one of her traps, for the marks she mistook for eyes really were just that - eyes that drag you down into whatever she wants you to see, and control you into thinking whatever she wants you to. Poor Skei really did lose her pendant, but for what else she might've lost there, one pendant was a small price to pay.

Day by day and week by week, seasons changed once again before Skei’s eyes. It seemed fate was not through with her once leaving the Windswept Plateau, either. Time seemed to pass in a sluggish pace with so few interactions. Those she did meet seemed skeptical of her tales or willing to trust. Where Sornieth had once felt like a thriving world of dragon’s as curious and compassionate as herself, now seemed distant.

She was left to wonder if she was growing too old for these travels. So many stories came to her ears that travelers of her age were fewer and fewer to be found. Some finding finality in a new clan, others simply disappearing with the breeze and never heard from again.

But this was her dream since birth. She wanted to prove herself to her family and her clan, but more importantly, she wanted to prove something to herself. A small, spunky little Nocturne like herself could make it through this world alone. No matter the turmoil and hardships; no matter the gossip and rumors that the deities were turning a blind eye to the world would keep her down.

From border to border and land to land, she costed the preferable winds on tired wings. Eventually, they led her back to a familiar place. Crystalline pillars of the most brilliant pink dazzled her eyes and she smiled to herself while searching for a place to rest among lush luminescent grass and glittering trees beneath a rising moon and fading sun. The sun was to her back; warming her hide and guiding her through the territory as the horizon beckoned her forward.

A flash gliding beneath her caught her eye, and Skei fluttered in place to better identify the figure. Instantly recognizable as one of her own kind, a Nocturne came barreling past her; causing a shocked screech to escape the lone adventurer.

“Oh, I’m terribly sorry!” the Noc exclaimed apologetically. “I was so distracted gathering together some of these glittering lacewing I didn’t even notice you.”

“That’s alright,” Skei stated with some amusement while she eyed the reflecting light off of the shimmering Noc. She was used to seeing the iridescent shine of scales, but she’d never seen the odd, bone-like markings on a dragon before.

Subconsciously, the pair began to beat their wings in a synchronized pattern. A default nature of their species causing a mirroring gesture that caused a few Spirals looping by to chuckle with amusement.

“Here,” the rich purple Noc stated, sheepishly offering out some of her insects. “I tend to collect a lot, anyway so my clan’s likely to donate these to charity anyway. Please accept them as an apology for nearly running you out of the sky.”

Warmth radiated into Skei’s veins and through her body as she gratefully accepted the offered sack. She looked back up to meet the golden yellow gaze of the grinning Noc.

“Thank you,” Skei humbly murmured. “Miss…?”

Poison,” the Noc stated shyly. Skei could see why. “And you’re…?”

“Skei.”

Poison smiled. “Lady Skei, then,” she mused. “Do you have a place to rest your head tonight?”

Skei laughed. “Well, now that you mention it…”

For some weeks, Skei found refugee in a gazebo upon an enchanting floating island. Being back in her homelands made her feel safer and more at ease then she had in months. At night, she’d watch the stars and meteors and during the day, enjoy the company of members of the nearby clan who had allowed her to stay. There she met their leader Alchemist and his mate, Mage. She discovered the gazebo they allowed her to stay at was a sort of ceremonial place; with dragon’s of the clan coming and going to pay their respects to the deity Arcanist and the statue that lay within the grand architect.

Their experienced warriors and trainers requested her to scuffle a bit; teaching her a few new techniques to protect herself with. Poison came by consistently to make sure that she had more than enough bugs to eat and became great chatter. Although the leader seemed a bit reclusive, he was nothing but sophisticated and polite while his mate was happy to offer a word or two of wisdom and a map of their land and surrounding territory to help her get by.

“Be careful around these areas,” the Matriach had stated, indicating some places on the map. “There’s some rather nasty Beastclan’s here and there we haven’t been able to drive out of our land.”

Skei could only nod her head, swimming in a sea of overwhelmed surprise. These dragon’s were nothing if not the opposite of what she had experienced as of late; considerate, kind, and giving. They offered her some of the glowing gemstones from their homeland to help her when life was at its darkest (so they said), and a kind Skydancer even mended some of the hardly noticeable fraying of her scarf.

Finally, the day came when she knew she could trouble these dragons no further. Their hospitable nature renewed her sense of purpose.

With eyes shining with tears, Poison gave a sad sniffle as she fluttered forward. To Skei’s surprise, the drake gripped her in an embrace.

“Take care of yourself,” she hummed, taking a step back before Skei could reciprocate the gesture. She pulled out some feathers and twine from her bag, and offered it out.

“May I?”

Having no clue what the Noc was suggesting, Skei gave a dumbfounded nod of agreement.

Quick as a flash of lightning striking the pillars in Shifting Expanse, Poison darted around to weave the twine and feathers around her tail. It gave Skei a reason to smile despite the heartache. She’d always have something to remind her of her new friends here, in Celestial Starweaver’s lands.

Poison stepped back, only for her clan’s Matriarch to step forward. She bowed her head with a sign of respect to Skei, causing her to puff up her chest with embarrassment.

“It was lovely meeting your acquaintance, Lady Skei,” the Coatl softly spoke. “Know that you are always welcome here should you need a place to recover and return to.”

Skei stared in awe. She slowly grinned, beaming wide and eager as she gave an enthusiastic nod. Her head dipped; clumsily whacking the Matriarch with her own. They both pulled away with a sharp yelp of pain. To Skei’s great relief, Mage began to laugh shortly after; giving her cause to giggle with humiliation at her own expense.

“Thank you,” Skei graciously squeaked. “That means a lot to me. I hope to return one day, too. You’ve all taught me so much, and given me so much of your time and generosity,” she turned to look each dragon in the eye as she spoke. “I wish you all the very best, but I must be on my way.”

Flapping her wings, the batty dragon took to the skies once more. She offered a final wave with her clawed digits as she took off, watching her new friends grow smaller and smaller the further she flew, once more into the great unknown.

It seems fate was not not very kind to Skei the last few months! She returned to Celestial Starweavers, lethargic and having all of her clothes stolen from her. Pitying the poor Nocturne, Alchemist agreed to allow her refuge for the first time inside the hidden cavern of the clan's home.

There, she rested for a few short days in the medical ward, looked after constantly by two Skydancer's. They were the clan's medics she soon realized; recognizing one named Rhianu. It suddenly made sense to her why her stitch-work was so precise; having spent years honing the skill to treat wounded dragons.

Skei also had the pleasure of getting to know another Skydancer quite well, who introduced himself as Yarrow. It was terribly obvious the blue and pink boy had a infatuation with the stunning green and yellow Skydancer. His wide-eyed fancy always following her around the medical ward with the fondest smile.

The little adventurer tried encouraging him to be open about his feelings, but it seemed not all were quite as brave as she was. Yarrow quickly dismissed the idea that he even had feelings for the other Skydancer. How the smitten boy managed to keep his dotting hidden from Rhianu, Skei had no clue. As far as she knew, Skydancer's had that strange sixth sense to be able to read other breeds. Surely even with competing and conflicting mental telepathy, Rhianu would have picked up on something...

Nevertheless, after a few short days with filling meals, Skei was ready to be on her way again. The clan went out of their way to purchase her replacement clothes or crafted pieces themselves from the goods on hand.

"It's not perfect," her old friend Poison had said, "They're not the same gifts you received from so many other dragons across Sorenith. But may they bring you peace, and remind you that not all of dragonkind and beastkind are out to tear you down."

Beaming with a radiant smile, Skei could only laugh softly at the fellow Noc's words as she gave her a parting hug.

"These are better than my replacements," she whispered. "They're from a friends I can trust, and they'll serve me well. Thank you for your kindness, and your clan's hospitality."

Poison flicked her tail to and fro. A cat-like gesture, smiling fondly.

"You're always welcome here, Skei," she reminded the dreaming adventurer gently. "Never forget that."
