Biography

verity

time witch

Time is a curiosity. With many uses, paths, and consequences, it can also be dangerous. Meddling with time is to court disaster, and yet Verity returns to such a risky business time and time again.

Once a sheltered shopkeeper in the Shifting Expanse, loving curator of many beautiful books, she was pulled headlong into the intricacies of time when a peculiar brown Spiral rushed into her shop in pursuit of a Black Iron Creeper with unusual (and apparently malevolent) tendencies. After having destroyed a great deal of Verity's shop with his skills, the Spiral remarked that she too had an odd skill set after merely glancing in her direction. He pulled an hourglass from his satchels, dropped in front of her, and warned her to tread lightly through time. With that, he and the Creeper vanished.

Needless to say, Verity was reluctant to have anything to do with the dragon who had so haphazardly tumbled through her life, but the intrigue of the hourglass far outweighed her bitterness. Tipping it aside with one claw, Verity suddenly found herself transported not to a different place, but to a different time. Where the walls of her shop had been, there was nothing but a view of the distant ridges. Lightning flashed overhead, and the barren, rocky expanse glowed blue in its light. In a panic, Verity righted the sandglass and was returned to her home in a flash.

While unnerved at first, she gradually began to foray into various times with zeal, slowly realizing the full extent of the little ornament's power. Her travels took her backward in time, to an era before the Gladekeeper or Plaguebringer, possibly even before the Arcanist. But she also traveled forward, and in this way, she found her home and her mate.

On this occasion, she left her roots in the Shifting Expanse to explore the Tangled Wood of the future, unaware of the conflict arising there. A Nature clan and a Shadow clan were embroiled deeply in war, resulting in a turbulent, unfriendly environment throughout the dark forest. It was near the Foxfire Bramble that Verity stumbled across one of the Nature clan's camps. At first taken for a spy, she was sent to the general for questioning, but her ignorance of the conflict proved her neither friend or foe so much as tourist. As such, she and the general (a kindly Skydancer named Nathan) spoke lightly, and she was offered shelter in exchange for her assistance around camp. At that point, Verity could have refused, could have turned the hourglass and been whisked home to her own time, but that insatiable curiosity of hers made her stay.

In the long weeks that passed, she and Nathan grew remarkably close, sometimes spending so much time together that Nathan's soldiers were prone to whispered criticism in the tents. But such a closeness like theirs, no matter how earnest or envied, is meant only for tragedy in war. Just as Nathan was seriously reconsidering the benefits (if there were any at all) of this war his clan was fighting, the camp was ambushed. Shadow dragons swarmed in, swift and silent, and Verity, in her haste to reach a safe vantage point, chipped the wooden base of her hourglass, which activated the piece.

The last thing she saw before returning to her past was Nathan being pinned down by an imperial nearly twice his size, and then she saw only her lonely shop counter.

Desperate to learn of the fate of the dragon she had come to love, Verity worked so tirelessly to fix her hourglass that even the Stormcatcher would have been proud. She vowed to find Nathan again, dead or alive. The question of his fate was the most painful one of her life, and there would be no stopping her in seeking answers. She visited so many experts in her quest to repair her magical time piece, spent so many hours researching replacements in the event that she could not undo the damage done. In the end, though, she fixed it by means of a curious burst of magic that flared from her claw-tips, blue and bright. The gouge in the timepiece smoothed itself over, and when Verity turned it, it responded for the first time in a very, very long time.

Hourglass miraculously restored, Verity combed various eras of the future until she found the one she sought. Venturing into the Tangled Wood by way of the Driftwood Drag, she found not only her answer, but a renewed sense of purpose. Nathan, though gravely injured, was recuperating in a Shadow clan that prided itself on being a neutral entity, a home for wandering mages. His wounds were no pleasant sight, but he was on the mend, and Verity decided then and there to leave her old life behind to stay by his side, a gesture that seemed to breathe new life into the Skydancer.

Since then, Nathan has recovered wonderfully, and he and Verity have declared themselves mates. She now takes him along on her travels through time, showing him Sornieth's wonders era by era. Sometimes, she swears she sees the Spiral that set her on her time traveling path as she and her mate wander, but that is one uncertainty she is more than happy to let well enough alone.
