Porfirio wandered a long time before he met Vianne, in whom he recognized another heartsick spirit: a Guardian without a Charge. When he asked for membership in her clan, she seemed to understand directly what he was truly asking for: a place to rest, to forget his lack of identity... comfort in the knowledge that he was not alone. He did his best to help stabilize the fledgling clan - in particular, giving advice to Keahi as he cleared space for the nursery. For himself, he carved out a cave below the clan's main floor. In this way, he made himself a life. It certainly was not a perfect life, for the void that was his unknown Charge was like a specter forever looming over him. Sometime he could ignore it, but not for long. Finally, his suffering came to an end. When Baldwin claimed the empty space at the Trading Post, Porfirio realized that he had found his calling: alchemy. The bubbling of the cauldron was soothing, mesmerizing: as if it contained all the secrets of life. Under Baldwin's cursory tutelage, he began to tease apart the art of his Charge. His studies did not always go as expected, and a few too many accidents changed his hide, bleaching his body with irregular white patches. He did not care - didn't even really notice, in fact. His Charge was much more important. After many months of research, he succeeded in creating apparel. This attracted Eirwen's attention: the beautician was forever looking for new apparel sources. She insisted that he work with her to clothe their fellow clanmates. Indifferent to her demands, Porfirio interpreted her "interest" as permission to delve further into the secrets of alchemy. So when he was not creating apparel for her, he was pushing his experiments further. One day, he succeeded in creating a living familiar. True, the blue blob of goop was not particularly impressive, but it was alive. Porfirio christened it "Zhivko" and permitted it the run of his laboratory. He hardly noticed the trails of vile-smelling slime it left everywhere. His Charge was much more important. (He tends to work closely with Eirwen to figure out what apparel would fit a particular dragon best; was later seduced by her in her attempt to make Thanh jealous. It fails; Porfirio, feeling used, retreats from everyone. And then later runs afoul of the Bogsneak Mutagen.) |
