Nanshe

Hatchery Guard, or just Guard, not that he's good at either.

Once, Nanshe was an ordinary rhodochrosite crane. But not anymore, since his inadvisable habit of eating shiny rocks somehow led to his transformation into a skydancer, instead of the far more likely fate of choking to death. And now that he's a dragon who's been adopted by the Aequitas Clan, he is overeager to do all the most dragonly things. At first, this meant that everyone just tricked him into doing their chores, because Nanshe had no reason to believe someone would lie about what is and isn’t dragonly. But as he’s become better with the Skydancer ability of sensing intentions, he’s starting to figure out when others are trying to take advantage of him. So now he tackles those chores with even greater conviction, because only the most powerful of dragons can be taken advantage of and survive!

The dragonly thing he spends the most time doing is taking care of hatchlings, as when Pachetonas told him how dragonly that was as she was the first to do so, and first things are always the most important. While such a task was far below him when he was prince of cranes, he’s a dragon now, and clearly dragons do things differently. Not that anyone would have been able to keep him away from the hatchlings even if Nanshe wasn’t convinced of the task’s dragonliness. They’re just so cute, and as a skydancer he can sense how much they love him. If you’re ever looking for Nanshe, checking for the fluffy, feathery thing under a pile of hatchlings is a good place to start.

Another dragon he’s been convinced to help with their work is Kerendia. Nanshe’s attempts at weaving are clumsy, but salvageable, and so he makes the bases for clothing and Kerendia does all the finer work. Just remember to hide any threads you don’t want used, or everything will end up in Nanshe’s favourite shades of blue and purple, colours which coincidentally match his plumage. Haukin also recruited the skydancer, and immediately regretted it. It’s not that Nanshe hates paperwork – he loves paperwork! It’s that what he loves about paperwork is the crinkling noises paper makes when you wave it around. It’s also that he’s illiterate, so when he’s done with them the papers somehow end up less sorted than they began. At least he’s learned to identify everyone’s handwriting, so he can tell Haukin who wrote any unsigned documents.

But while he might be illiterate, he’s also multilingual. Not only can he speak common draconic and rhodochrosite crane, but the other avian beastclan languages, such as harpy and talonok, as well. This has endeared him to Isfet, who has similar skill in beastspeak. The two make a game of constantly switching languages and trying to trip each other up. Nanshe always loses, because his vocabulary isn’t exactly expansive, even in his native language.

As part of his transition from bird to dragon, Nanshe did something he technically could have done before; he put on some clothes. But not ordinary clothes, no, these are regal clothes, fit only for a prince among dragons! And by that, Nanshe means they’re covered in shiny things and dangly things, which can provide him entertainment for hours. He even found himself some enchanted lanterns, which erratically float around him and provide a constant fire hazard. Nanshe doesn’t believe his clanmates when they tell him that staring enraptured by a bobbing lantern isn’t a particularly dragonly thing to do.

At least Nanshe is passable at the most dragonly of things: hoarding treasure. Unfortunately, he’s not very good at hoarding things of any value. His bird instincts prefer bright coloured and sparkly objects, and while gemstones do fit that description, if you paint a rock bright pink, he’ll gladly trade a wide variety of expensive things for it. His skewed concept of value is his fatal flaw, as he also doesn’t seem to comprehend personal property. Like a ridgeback, if you aren’t currently holding something in your claws, Nanshe doesn’t understand that he can’t have it. Even if it’s jewellery dangling from your wings. Thankfully, he normally doesn't steal things like that, because he's been too distracted by something shiny in someone's garbage. Luckily for Nanshe, most of Clan Aequitas doesn’t really care if he’s stealing scraps of brightly coloured fabric from their trash. He makes toys for the hatchlings out of those bits anyways.

The reason Nanshe wants so badly to do dragonly things is that he’s not very good at avoiding bird-like things. He roosts on branches and pecks at fruits. He still collects shiny trash, and any glass windows are faintly marked of his face crashing into them. Luckily for him, his ability to sense emotions lets him avoid any dragons who are particularly dangerous and would hurt his birdbrained self. He even seems to have more talent for it than the other Skydancers in the clan, knowing to avoid Vespera like the plague without having ever met her. Then again, he also avoids Astraea, who is more ditzy than dangerous, so perhaps he needs more practice.

One dragon his senses didn’t tell him to avoid was Nephthys. Perhaps that was because he was too blinded by the beauty of her plumage, which has dark, saturated colours that are never seen among rhodochrosite cranes. He decided to perform the traditional mating dance of his people for her, which does not work in the slightest with his entirely different body shape. Nephthys might have only accepted his advances because as healer, it was either that or be constantly treating the injuries he’d be causing to himself by contorting his body in such unnatural and visually disturbing ways.

~ Ah, the majestic rhodochrosite crane. A specimen of grace and beauty, but also one of nature’s most violent birds. These pink predators are usually content to feast on ordinary fish, but once a year they turn their eyes towards larger prey. Every spring, the crane with the most vivid plumage is crowned prince, and the rest of the flock becomes subservient to them. In exchange for this power, the prince is given a simple task: slay a dragon.

Luckily for the prince, they don’t have to do this alone. The rest of the flock assists, and the prince is only expected to land the killing blow. A few cranes act as bait, to get the target’s attention, and then a cloud of other birds swarm the unlucky dragon, peeling them off from any allies and pushing them towards the location of an ambush. There, the dragon meets their end, and the flock is free to feast on succulent dragonflesh. This bloody ritual is believed to bless the flock with bountiful clutches and healthy chicks for the oncoming year, and so the other cranes take every precaution to ensure their prince is successful.

For this reason, the cranes usually go after smaller dragons, such as Fae or Spirals. Even if there’s less meat to go around, that there’s any at all is of utmost importance. Additionally, smaller dragons have thinner scales, and so can be dispatched with a single thrust of the prince’s needle-sharp beak through the heart. But even with the rhodochrosite cranes’ incredible displays of teamwork, sometimes they still fail. Dragons are formidable creatures as well, and not particularly eager to be slain. And when the dragon proves too powerful to take down, well, the ex-prince will have more important things to worry about than the livelihood of their flock… for what time they have left to worry.

But sometimes, the prince proves too incompetent to even make it that far — and once in a blue moon, so incompetent that they go farther than anyone could have expected.

Once upon a time, Nanshe was the prince of one such flock of rhodochrosite cranes. His plumage was radiant, light bouncing off the crystals the same way it bounced around in that empty void he called his head. And while having a discotheque for a brain might seem like a fun time, it made him the most airheaded prince in a long line of vapid crane princes.

So, while the rest of the flock was off preparing their ambush, Nanshe was strutting around, looking at all the local shiny rocks. His favourite rock was a small, pale blue one, scratched in interesting patterns and glowing with an unusual light. It was while he was busy admiring it that there was sudden squawking from behind – the signal that he needed to get into position. But there was no way he was going to leave such a nice rock behind!

In a flash of inspiration, he came up with the brilliant idea of swallowing the stone. Then he took to the sky, heeding the increasing impatient call of his flock. In his panicked flight, he didn’t even notice that he was growing larger, his face was changing shape, and that he’d suddenly grown arms and a long tail! By the time he arrived at the ambush location, the prince was no more, and in his place was an equally regal skydancer, pale blue gem shining away in the middle of his forehead.

But then, betrayal! For absolutely no reason at all, the rest of Nanshe’s flock suddenly swarmed him, scratching him all over and pinning him to the ground with their feathery bodies. He screeched at them, demanding to know what they were doing to their prince. But not one bird responded. However, they did kindly stop clawing him. In an odd sort of stalemate, Nanshe was stuck, pinned on his back, and the cranes were milling about as if waiting for someone. Not that Nanshe could think of anyone who could be missing. He was here, and he was by far the most important one!

And then, somebody did show up.

It had been an unremarkable day on patrol in the Runic Mountain Range. Clear skies, a light breeze, and somebody screaming bloody murder in the distance. Pachetonas sighed. Technically, it was her job to rescue whoever had gotten themselves in trouble for the fifth time this week. She gestured impatiently over to the rest of her team, Nephthys and Veles, who’d been busy having completely contrasting personalities and not getting along in the slightest. They needed to stop wasting time and get themselves into the air. Time was of the essence – if someone was in real trouble every second mattered, and if not, they’d want to have as much time to snicker at the hapless dragon as possible.

But for once, they arrived to find a stranger in trouble. This was quite unusual, considering how difficult it was to reach the Runic Mountains un the first place. And those who did know how to travel the leylines here generally ended up flat on their face in Myrtle’s vegetable patch, not out here in the wildlands. And they normally weren’t being swarmed by angry pink birds either.

Pachetonas sighed again. Is was that time of the year, wasn’t it? Well, some fighting would do her good.

Nanshe was busy catching his breath so that he could get back to screeching at his rebellious flock when a huge shadow fell over him. It was one – no, two – of those humongous dragons! Well, they were looking a bit smaller than they used to be, but that didn’t stop the white one from sending a score of cranes flying with a single swing of their tail. Another group were fried by a blast of lightning from the blue one, and the rest quickly fled the scene in a shower of sparkling pink feathers.

Nanshe was furious. Why did his subjects have to be such cowards? Well, no matter, he was going to finish this himself. Even though he could somehow sense that this huge white dragon was concerned for his well-being, they were a dragon that needed slaying, and he was just the prince to do it!

Exasperated, Pachetonas looked down at the gibberish-spouting skydancer, who was furiously but ineffectively smashing his beak into her hide. She wasn’t sure if she was more annoyed by his ungratefulness, or that he was nowhere near the weirdest dragon she’d had the ‘pleasure’ of meeting.

Eventually, she just grabbed Nanshe with both arms, and began to fly the struggling skydancer back to the Aequitas lair. She’d done her job, one of her clanmates could deal with this oddity. Probably Veles, for he was conveniently already here.

Eventually, after Isfet had taught him basic draconic, Nanshe was forced to admit that in truth he was not a rhodochrosite crane, but a dragon. By all accounts, he was quite overjoyed by this seemingly obvious revelation. He was bigger, stronger, more beautiful. And as dragons are on average smarter than birds, he was more intelligent too. (Not that anyone would notice.) But most importantly, as he was once the prince of cranes, obviously he was now the prince of dragons. And who doesn’t want to be the beloved ruler of an entire clan of dragons?

Nobody has quite managed to convince Nanshe that he isn’t a dragon prince, but he’s harmless enough that many are willing to let his delusions slide.
