BOOK 1

Pagus' physical offspring are not magical at all. Magic was not at the heart of the tragedy which would soon unfold concerning his beloved daughter, Spira. How he himself obtained his magical Elements and Abilities is somewhat of a mystery to him. And it is providential that Pagus was entrusted with them. But he doesn't know what those Elements and Abilities are. He is only aware of when he acquired them. The Arcanist chose him for a great honor, but so far as he knows, he's nothing more than an ordinary dragon with a great secret. On a conscious level, he chooses to ignore any magical heritage or inclination, even though the Elements and Abilities he was given were purely of the dynamic source called magic.

On the other hand, he is drawn to the spiritual, to the Arcanist himself you could say. He faithfully seeks to meditate and offer sacrifices of trinkets and gold. Once when engaged in his religious practices, he saw a vision of the deity and was lead on a journey which ended on a remote floating island in Arcane territory near the Hoverview Dale close to Earth territory.

After diving for seafood and occasionally chasing birds for fun, Pagus was tired and sat down to admire the view from atop the island. Ah, he remembered that he promised to bring home a meal for his family. He dug a bit with his talons moving from place to place carefully storing the rare vermin in his pouch. While scavenging along the cliff's edge he stumbled across an intriguing cave and thought that he must explore the place, for caves had always been of great interest to him. It had been a long day, so after consuming the evening seafood meal, he moved deeper into the cave to take his rest for the night. Exhausted, he began to wonder why the Arcanist brought him to the island. There's not much glory in napping, he thought ruefully. I'll explore in the morning, he said to himself, but fishpoo, I wish I had my digging tools.

The cave's path lead him first by a little stream which grew to a modest size from the moisture seeping from the walls where the mossy growth seemed soft and inviting. A breeze was felt, probably from a distant opening. To the left there were several paths, and to the right a path leading to a pool of water. He made note of this, but he chose the center path where a large opening showed a descent into a huge cavern with many offshoots and nooks. It had patches of beautiful moss, plants and mushrooms growing out of the dirt and moss. He proceeded slowly downward deeper into the cavern. Now, bright and twinkling, he could see them. Embedded in the walls were beautiful geodes in brilliant colors and sizes. It was like a whole universe of glittering stars, twinkling, undisturbed for centuries. But what was the source of the light? There must be a small opening for the sun and moon to source this heavenly scene, he mused.

wCMlg3l.png

Drawn deeper into the cave's roomy expanse, Pagus stopped short at a startling sight. Under the floor of the cave, in the moss-covered dirt, shone a mysterious pinkish sort of light. Really it appeared to be almost purple, due to a very slight pulse. Pink, purple, pink, purple. And with every pulse the crystals on the cave wall blinked. Was this the source of light? He surveyed the place again. It was the most beautiful of all caves.

Pagus stuck his talons into the dirt and dug through the plushy moss and the mushroom clusters to carefully expose the mysterious glowing object. The extraction would have been better handled with the appropriate tools, he chided himself. What happened next made no sense and confused him immensely. He started wondering if this was the Arcanist's doing. What he retrieved from the moist ground was a rolled up piece of parchment. There was no more glow and darkness set in.

Suddenly, he needed to sleep. He felt clammy. An unnatural grogginess came over him drawing him to clutch the scroll close to his feathery chest. He found a crevice in the cave wall and took his resting position and not seconds too soon, for he was dreaming deep, sinking deeper and deeper, descending into a far away, black abyss. When suddenly he stopped sinking and he was awake. Or was he?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The scroll burned his heart. He hastily moved from the crevice and threw it off and it fell open, it's stone-like markings exposed, but misty-looking and unintelligible.
No! This was strange, he thought, and he turned to leave the cave. But then he remembered the journey he was on for his deity. With his heart racing, he decided to turn around and retrieve the cloth or whatever it was. That's when his heart leaped to the cave ceiling. A dragon messenger, dark crystal in appearance, like black diamonds, now held open the scroll. The coatl shape was familiar and the humming tones had no need for translation, as he understood clearly that he must read the anciently scribed runes now alight.
Taking it in his own grasp, he was stunned by its heaviness in its open state. It was, in weight, similar to a thick curtain. How could a piece of cloth have that quality, he mused. The scroll almost reached down to the mossy and mushroom-rich floor of the cave. The runes were inscribed on an icy teal stone-like background with an ink in a beautiful pearlized periwinkle and a sort of fuchsia-colored imperfections. The cave was entirely lit from the haunting glow.
Pagus was somehow able to quickly absorb the meaning of every rune. It's message was crystal clear. This was the wisdom he had been seeking in his service to his deity. Formerly, he desired to save his own clan and the Arcane flight, if possible, from any enemy at any level of danger. But now, he had the secret which could potentially protect all dragon-kind from extinction by the shade. Could this be true? Would the clans of Sornieth finally have protection?
He looked at his crystal visitor, which resembled an apparition from the Ghost Light Ruins and asked him, "Is it true?" The crystal coatl confessed that he did not know the message which was contained in the scroll, but he came to make sure the scroll was found and read. "I am
Geode
," he continued with a frank style of humming. "You must never share the secret scroll with anyone, not even me."
"Now don't be afraid," Geode went on, "I must cast a spell on you." Whayt! Pagus instantly felt creepy crawlies as if wind had suddenly shifted across his feathers and moved the opposite direction of the natural plumage and his spidey-sense heightened. The skin under his feathers prickled and for a brief moment, he panicked.
Physically, he just knew he would lose the dinner of which he had just partaken as the form of an apparition overtook his senses. Appalled, he recognized his own form and now full-blown fear assaulted him. Was this an out-of-body experience or death? Geode answered the silent question as if he'd faced this scenario before and said, "Sorry. That was necessary in order for me to communicate with you an important Ability from the Arcanist?" "Communicate," he answered with suspicion and irritation, for the experience was anything but pleasant? "I didn't hear anything", Pagus replied bitterly trying to collect himself and shake it all off.
"Don't worry, all will become clear as you carry out the will of your deity." But it wasn't clear. At least, not yet. Pagus looked back at the scroll and the cloth rolled up within his hand and sealed itself. Geode looked at the bag hanging on Pagus. Following Geode's line of vision, Pagus took this as a cue to tuck the scroll safely into his satchel. Strange how it now was light as a feather. Geode told him to take one crystal from the cave, but just one. Then Geode disappeared and after closing his eyes in relief, Pagus fell into a calm sleep.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When Pagus awoke, he thought he was just waking from an unfamiliar, but regenerating rest. It's like the sleep of a hibernating creature, but without any waking disorientation. He was fully alert.

The memories of the previous day and the encounter with Geode flooded him as well as a desperate thirst. He hastily left, then remembered the crystal Geode told him he must take with him. Looking around, he was able to spot one due to the sunlight, but it did not have the sparkling star-like quality it did last night even though a thousand dragons would kill for such a treasure just as it was now. Tucking it into his satchel, he spotted the scroll, and thought it looked smaller than it did last night, but shook his head as if to clear up and put into perspective the memory of the encounter and acquisition.

The now overwhelming thirst called him out and he found the beautiful pool with crystal clear water and fresh air filtering through the sunlight filled crevice in the ceiling of the cave. The lush green walls hosted flora and fauna, insects, bonsai-like shrubs, and of course, waterfalls. Just the sight of it was invigorating. He could hear the harmonious bubbling of the brook as the stream of water trickled and dripped into the pond. Surprisingly, fresh-water fish satisfied him for the morning meal and he lingered there on a protruding rock platform which extended into the body of the pond. He found a few loose stones which he stacked, then he meditated to the great Arcanist. Leaving glow mushrooms, fish eyes and bones as an offering, he set out for the mouth of the cave, desiring to get back home.

BOOK 2

Back in Starwood Strand, Pagus tried to gather his thoughts before entering his lair. The towering crystal wall cave which sits at the border of Plague territory was perfect for the numerous number of dragons in Star Keeper's clan. They recently re-located to Starwood Strand for it's beautiful and unique aesthetic. There was plenty of room in the numerous caves, and dragons of his breed would have easy access to a food supply.

He knew he'd be bombarded with questions, usually quite trivial in nature, by his wife's meddling disposition. "How was the flight, dear?" "Did you see anyone we know, love?" Why were you so delayed? "You know I don't like you to be gone too long." "Did you bring anything home for me?" was the usual litany. All the while there was not a shred of eye contact. Only busy movements of cleaning and fussing over the dirt and moss being tracked in by traces of the cave experience greeted the aging old dragon. He suddenly felt weary and said, "I have much to tell you about my travels my dear, however, I must rest for a moment." Of course, he had no intention of telling her much of anything.

A few minutes later, Spira waltzed into the room and touched her father's shoulder. "Please come with me to the shore, father," she implored seeing her father's weariness. "You need sustenance after such long travels." "Oh, Spira, leave your father be. Go get it yourself," argued her mother.

Pagus, seeing the dejected look on his daughter's face, said, "No, she's right,
Mer
. I haven't had a decent meal since last night. Besides, I'll be much more alert after getting something in my stomach. And if not, a short nap will regenerate me. Then I can tell you all about my trip."

She finally looked at him for a long while, then said, "Have it your way, Gussy, using the pet name she only said in this tight family circle, for she was exceedingly formal with anyone outside of the three of them. He didn't mind it though as it always seemed to draw them closer. He smiled, picked up his tools and exited with his young daughter.

It's possible that this is where it all began to go wrong for the small family. Although, Pagus would not have disobeyed Geode's instructions not to reveal the information on the scroll to anyone, he didn't see much wrong in telling a little bit about his acquisition as this was not forbidden to tell. Or was it? Spira began to inquire about the flight and distant place her father had visited and why he took the trip to begin with.

Pagus struggled to explain that his devotion to the Arcanist and the vision which prompted the far away trip impelled him to leave. He felt no choice in the matter. She's still young and naive, he thought. Do I dare introduce her to the deeper things of service? So far, the only training the young girl had received was existing on the physical level and just the surface of spiritual devotion had been imparted to her. But the magical, that topic was forbidden in the home. It is very strange for a family to reside in Arcane and not dabble in the magic arts. The draw of the Arcanist deity and the beauty of the Starwood Strand is what kept this small clan habitating in the territory.

"Well, father," interrupting his thoughts, "why did you leave and what took you so long to get home?," she implored. Pagus thoughtfully chose his words so as to not reveal what Geode forbid. "I was meditating and I saw a vision which the Arcanist gave me. The place I went is where the deity revealed I should go."

"Why, father. Why would he show himself in a vision? That sounds creepy."

"In spiritual matters we often do encounter uncomfortable, but fascinating experiences. And this was one of them. I count it an honor to be chosen."

Spira was intrigued. She asked about the place her father visited. "Where did you go and what happened there?" The mystery was growing in her mind and she had to know more. It was all very innocent, but the knowledge was about to capture her in a web.

Pagus carefully answered, "I saw another vision. Well, not exactly a vision." "Then what," she asked." Now the conversation was getting uncomfortable for him. He started to regret leaving the lair with her. I had no idea she would be so nosey. I guess she's growing up, he thought.

"I saw a.... visitor." A visitor she thought. "What do you mean... a visitor," she asked? He struggled, "I don't know. It looked like me, but it was like a black diamond. No, a whole mosaic of black diamonds. They gleamed so eerily that there were times he looked white like a ghost floating in the cave."

"A cave, she repeated, you were in a cave?" He hesitated. "Yes, it was very beautiful and had sparkling gem all over the walls in rainbow colors."

"Oh, father, take me there," she almost shouted. He shook his head in denial. "Why not?" her snout flaring. And without waiting for an answer, she asked, "Well, did you bring the gems home with you then?" "Just one," he replied. She stopped short, "I want to see it, now," she demanded. "Please, father." Again, he shook his head no. "I dropped it off at the observatory for examination," he lied.

They had finally reached the shore, but Spira was miffed so she just sat on the shore waiting for her father to catch fish and eat. It was a long, silent walk home. But in Spira's mind she was determined to find out exactly what happened at that cave, for somehow she didn't completely believe her father's story.

A Short Bit of History

The story goes somewhat like a woven cloth, criss-crossing in several dimensions. Although the common tale told in the halls of Arcane's Tourmaline Archives is not exactly personal to any particular dragon, it does touch upon on real-life for dragons and their clans. It would have to because one of those threads in the cloth is the line within the story that we are following here. Can we jump to another thread and follow that line in the story? Of course we can. But that would be an entirely different reality depending on how many threads you jumped. This story, although still somewhat disjointed and a bit of a mystery, is pertinent to this particular clan and it's child-matriarch, Revolution.

The personal part of the story we have been able to follow in Star Keeper's Clan is that Pagus is spiritually connected to Revolution as a patriarchal figure in every familial way. He represents the seed of familial ancient beginnings; i.e. grandfather, father, brother, and even a son of sorts. But Pagus also has stories to tell from his own lair which are far more personal and hit a bit closer to home. This tale we hope will have a happy ending. No one knows, it depends on how many threads in the cloth are connected or ripped apart; how many we grasp on to and in doing so end up following to it's reality.

In this life, Pagus has a long history within Starkeeper's clan for his mother, Hyperbole, was one of the original settlers. He rarely acknowledges or visits his mother, who is a respectable member. But in his defense, since this event took place, time has no meaning to him, so it is an understandable oversight. Good luck to you in your attempt to follow this thread, for you may have to travel around a bit to get the full measure and substance.

The next section should explain how Spira overheard Pagus and Meringue discussing the scroll.

Why was Pagus chosen for this honor?
Ability: exposes dragon deception
Element: protection from obsession and insanity while reading the scroll

Plot:
The gem he took is given to the observatory and is the item that can save the dragons. It is the key for the portal to other dimensions and can be used in the case of an apocalypse. Dragon's must travel to the observatory and utilize the gem essence to open the portal. In some terrifying cases, dark spirits and shade entities can enter when the portal is opened. And that is exactly what happened. The magnificence of the portal which brought a level of security from total destruction also opened the door to tragedy for his family.

The scroll reveals the history and knowledge of the important things one needs to know about the historical, magical and spiritual secrets. The revelation of knowledge is dependent on who is holding the scroll; and when not held by one dragon, it will give random secrets of the universe as needed. However, Pagus does not give the scroll to the Observatory. He selectively gathers 12 other dragons to examine the scroll in secret. These dragons are close associates of his from the revealing ceremony.

The revealing ceremony is the spiritual transformation which takes place after much study is devoted to the Arcanist. Occasionally, this transformation is just given to the young without study and devotion, but the young must strive to keep it despite the fact that they may not know they have it. It is a different journey in their case; one where they must discern, acknowledge and receive/accept the light and deeper understanding that they were chosen for something great. If they keep it, there is great reward. If they don't keep it, there is much weeping and bitterness in the end.
