Biography
Son ... just don't.
|
From the moment Cap hatched, his small Fae body was beleaguered by the contagions of his Flight rather than immune to them. However, the soul of a much stronger, fiercer dragon was caged within his chest and refused to succumb to the weaknesses of his eyes and lungs and heart. As a hatchling, he was constantly in trouble: despite his small size, he was determined to stand up for what he felt was right, and this often led to him fighting against much larger, meaner dragons. Thankfully, his best friend Bucky was normally there to wade in on his behalf. The two were rarely seen apart, with the Wildclaw providing the muscle to back up Cap's big mouth when he couldn't convince the Fae that speaking up was a bad idea. Then the two friends grew into adults, and the Shade returned. |
Cap would have gone to fight in an instant, but his tiny frame and weak constitution made him unfit for service in the eyes of dragon and Beastclan leaders alike. They turned him away. His best friend Bucky, on the other hand, was snapped up by the recruitment drives. Though concerned that his friend might not return - and disappointed that he could not join him - Cap was glad that at least one of them would make a difference in the War.
Before he left, Bucky tried to convince Cap to give up on the idea of fighting himself, but Cap was determined to keep trying. At every opportunity, he presented himself for inspection as a candidate for skirmishing parties, raids and reconnaissance missions - to no avail, until the day he met Erskine.
ERSKINE |
Erskine was a Salve Kamaitachi - not trusted by many dragons, as his kind were known to be allied with the Shade. Yet he saw something in Cap that the other recruiters had missed: he saw beyond his physicality to the strength of the spirit beneath, and gave him a chance that would change his life forever. He was put into training alongside the other recruits. He struggled - yet never gave up, and sometimes used tactical thinking to overcome problems that stumped the others. He impressed even the most skeptical with his bravery. |
Using a specially brewed potion concocted by their Serthis allies and powerful Light magic , Erskine began the procedure - and Cap began to transform.
No longer a small and sickly Fae, he is now a mighty Imperial.
However, the moment of glory was tinged with sadness. Once the transformation was complete, one of the supposed allies who had borne witness to the amazing change turned on Erskine, fatally wounding him. Cap's friend and mentor died in his arms. Afterwards, Cap went after the rogue Black Wolf to bring him to justice, but the Shade consumed the creature before he could proffer any useful information.
Erskine's death gave Cap a renewed sense of purpose. He was sent to the front lines to combat the Shade, and there was reunited with Bucky - who was amazed by his transformation. Cap quickly amassed a troop of followers - dragon, Beastclan and allies alike - who became known as the Howling Commandos.
Cap's presence on the battlefield began to turn the tide of the War - but there was still the Shade troops' leader, a mutated Hydra Scorpion known as the Red Skull, to be dealt with. Cap knew that Erskine and the Red Skull had history: before Erskine had managed to find his way into dragon-controlled territory, the Scorpion had forced him to use his magic to cause the very mutations that now made him a formidable and terrifying enemy. He also knew that it was on the Red Skull's orders that Erskine had been killed. He and the Howling Commandos focused all of their efforts on locating the Red Skull and stopping him once and for all. Unfortunately, during one of the skirmishes, Bucky was taken prisoner. It took Cap and the Howling Commandos months of searching to discover where he had been taken. All the while, the Beastclan and dragon leaders insisted that they should be fighting the Red Skull and driving back the Shade - and Cap tried to go on fighting, but his heart was no longer in the fight, not so long as Bucky was in the Red Skull's clutches. Finally, they found the facility where Bucky had been taken. Cap and the Howling Commandos stormed it together, hoping to rescue their friend. However, they discovered that they were too late. Bucky had become Shadetouched. |
|
Heartbroken and furious, Cap's determination redoubled - though now when he faced the Winter Soldier, he was barely able to defend himself out of fear of hurting Bucky, and the Red Skull knew it. The leader of the Shade troops deliberately pitted the two against each other time and time again, and at the end of every fight, Cap fled, battered and scarred, rather than take down his old friend.
Eventually, he managed to rip away the mask that covered Bucky's face and look into his eyes as the Wildclaw fought him - and for just a moment he saw recognition. A fragment of the dragon he once knew. Then the two of them plunged into the Sea of a Thousand Currents, and Cap passed out.
He woke on the shoreline, alone and barely alive, and after that the Winter Soldier disappeared from combat.
Cap returned to the Howling Commandos to continue the fight against the Shade, and this time, without Bucky to stand between them, there was nothing to stop Cap from taking down the Red Skull himself. He defeated the Hydra Scorpion and cast him into the depths of the Fortress of Ends, to be frozen forever.
Without their leader, the Shade's forced were broken and with War was all but over. Yet Cap still had one more battle to fight. Despite what his friends and commanders told him, he refused to give up on Bucky. Shadetouched or not, he chose to believe that his friend was still there, beneath the conditioning, and that he had survived their last fight. He knew that Bucky had saved him.
His determination to find Bucky - and his willingness to forgive him - meant that he fell out of favour with his original Clan and their Beastclan allies. He left, following scraps of information about his friend's whereabouts until he reached the Starfall Isles.
There he was recruited to the Avengers: a team of dragons who defend the Lundlaevungar. However, he did not give up his search for Bucky ... |
