"Do not fear me."
╰━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━╯

When Anahera was first born, it is said that her wings were pure white, as bright as freshly fallen snow and three times as soft. Her parents, with their dark wings of grey and green, didn't know what to make of it. So they let it be.

One week later, on the eve of her adolescence, Anahera felt a pain in her shoulderblades. It was deep and fierce and cut like a jagged knife. When the pain subsided, she felt weightless. And when she turned? It was to find her wings gone, the blades of where they should have been were nothing but red hot scars.

That night, while the clan slept, Anahera drifted and was tugged into a fitfull sleep. She dreamt a Spiral found her alone in the woods and their eyes were as dark as sin. The Spiral spoke and it's voice was like the shrieking wind.

"You were not made for kindness. You were made with a fire in your heart. You were born to hate, to despise. Not for kindness; never that."

When Anahera woke, she felt cold and clammy and afraid. These words were so strange to her. What did they mean, truly? For surely they weren't truth. They couldn't be.

All that day she was snappish and distant, afraid of this deceitful prophecy. She kept to herself and repeated a mantra: I am not unkind. I do not hate. I do not despise. I am light. But she still felt the bleak eyes of the Spiral.

Days turned to weeks and weeks to months until everything was a clouded mess of memories, mantras, and misery. She grew spiteful and afraid, haunted by the dream, and cast aside her friends and family. If the world would think her cruel, then best let them only think it. Best not get too close and turn on them like a viper. If she had no friends than surely the dream could not be true?

And so it became. She shunned herself from society, from her clan. She drew into herself and spoke to no one. She found solace in wandering, in hunting for her next meal. She put time and distance between herself and her old clanmates.

And then she met the twins Lucius and Photios. They were strange to her; brightly lit as if from within, but with eyes as vivid pink as a sunset. They'd been doing work for nearby clans, using their magics to take care of pesky problems and then receive coin in turn.

As it turned out, Anahera had become a pesky problem. She'd been holing up in a cave nearby and the locals had mistaken her for a ghoul or wraith. Lucius and Photios had a might laugh at it, but Anahera only watched them blankly.

The twins suggested she accompany them back to the nearby clan as proof that they weren't being haunted by some vengeful spirit. At the promise of coin, she conceded. It was only after they split the cash a few hours later (and after the locals peered at her with distrust) that the twins offered to take her with them. They could use a dragon who knew how to wield a sword and wouldn't mind splitting the coin in thirds for her.

Anahera reluctantly agreed. What harm could come of it? She needed the coin and these two seemed more than capable of warding off whatever lurked within her. So she joined them and together they continued questing about the land, doing the odd job for whatever clan needed their assistance. By her request, Anahera never dealt with the socializing.

It was by chance that they ran into the Frozen-Sea Clan. They were carving out extra space for their growing numbers, but with pure hand-building it would take weeks, months even, to claw sturdy enough holes in the ice. The twins offered their aid ("Ice is no match for our arcanic abilities, surely!") and Anahera was forced to watch as they set to work. With the help of whatever mage's the clan had to offer, they slowly chipped away at the fjord. Quicker than by hand, yes, but slowly.

Initially discomforted by the closeness of this clan, Anahera declined all offers sent her way. She wouldn't eat with them and she wouldn't meet the hatchlings. She stayed in her ice cave, a colder variety of the one that the twins had found her in the first time.

It was Yui who convinced her to join her for meals in her private rooms. She said she was a seer and most in the clan were not comfortable with spending too much time around her, lest they needed her efforts. When Anahera looked close to saying no, Yui pressed, "Won't you accompany a lonely dragon for lunch? I promise I will not harm you." And she smiled, but Anahera could not. What if I harm you? But she swallowed her fear and accompanied the seer.

The conversation while they ate was idle chatter. After they spoke of the gyre's that had poked up on the southern border, Anahera could not take it anymore.

"You have not asked about my wings." Or lack thereof.

Yui looked surprised. "Did you want me to?"

"No, I-" Anahera blushed before collecting herself. "Most dragons just do. I was surprised that you didn't bring it up."

Yui seemed to think on that for a moment. Finally, she said, "You know I am a seer."

"Yes."

"I have seen you, Anahera."

This, too, surprised Anahera. "You have?"

Yui nodded. "I did not know you at the time. Imagine my surprise when you walked into the lair." She laughed lightly then but turned serious once more. "In my vision, you had your wings. But they were not truly there. Does this make sense to you?"

"No," she replied bluntly.

Yui laughed again. "No, I thought not. Your wings were with you, but they were not present in a way that you could see them. They will return, I assure you. But you must fight it."

"It?"

Leaning forward, Yui looked unblinkingly into Anahera's eyes. "The demon within."

The conversation quickly returned to normal after that, despite Anahera's curious questions. Yui refused to divulge any more information, so Anahera dismissed herself and resumed her brooding in her room. At night, when she slept, Anahera had another dream.

The Spiral visited her again, but this time it looked even more wicked. "You have fed me for years," it snapped. "Why stop now?" And she dreamt of fire, and pyres, and the burning of a cold, cold heart that refused to catch. She saw a phoenix and felt a burning pain. And at last, she woke. And she found her wings, different colour though they may be. They were hers.

Yui explained the curse to her in detail much later, only after Anahera had convinced the twins to join her in staying with this particular clan. The twins seemed relieved, actually. They'd been worried about Anahera for months, they admitted, and felt she needed more companionship than they could offer.

Later, Anahera would recall the phoenix in her fever dream. She remembered seeing it rise out of the ashes of a long dead fire and start anew. She felt kinship with this beast, and she felt kind.
