Biography

I am the Mind of this Grove, I think for us and make our decisions; but like all minds, I am beholden to the Soul. I hear many voices, and many consciences, and so my decision is the decision of many.

I will tell you of my origins, as I remember them.

I hatched alone in a nest of twigs, and somehow ate enough to stay alive. Nature always seemed to provide when I was in need. I hatched a mirror, with a great crest and small, sleek form. My existence was solitary, tiring, and boring, yet I trundled through it. I wandered for a time, and when I saw other dragons I always minded my distance, but held tentative talks with them. I grew to adulthood in relative solitude, until I eventually fell down atop young shoots one particular dragon didn't want me sleeping on. He dragged me away by my crest, and I was too tired to protest. I slept where he left me.

When I awoke, he did not attack me, but stood in my path. I introduced myself as Bedwen, a word I had heard others use to describe me, and the guardian identified himself as Paxid. He seemed to have bonded with a strangler, and often spoke in plural. At first, I thought that when he said "we" he was talking about himself and his familiar, but soon learned he meant to include the plants all around us.

He called the place his Grove, and the area I had fallen down the nursery. He explained, in odd words, that he protected the Grove, and that he was a part of it, and that I could be a part of it, too, if I would care for it with him. He called me Bedwen, and I preferred that word to Birch.

Something that I still cannot fathom attracted me to him then, and holds me at his side now. Paxid holds strange beliefs about the beginning of his life, and about its continued existence, but he cultivates this land with such diligent care, and does seem to care for me, in his way. He needs somedragon's help, and in all the time I have known him that dragon has only ever been me. He needs me, even if he will not admit it, and I freely admit that I need him.

It is through my love of Paxid that I love this Grove, though it is through his love of the Grove that Paxid loves me. I am at peace with that, and have learned to see the world through a guardian's eyes.

Our first egg, Tubur, shows understanding of his father's world-view, but holds a greater affinity for the earth itself than the plants that grow in it.
