Biography
MOURNE
Theme
HISTORY Mourne is the Night's Gale bookkeeper. He meticulously tracks every item that boards the ship. How it came to be there, when it arrived, how and when it leaves, and if it was sold how much it was for. He tracks all expenses and monetary gains, filling up journal after journal with information that he jots down, leaving an extra column on the side of his parchment for personal notes. His neatly-organized notes are something to be in awe of, and the crew has an appropriate amount of respect for it. Mischief has called him 'fearsome in his own right' and even Rowdy and Riot make sure not to touch his journals. Though he notes down all of the Night's Gales accounts passionately enough, Mourne was not initially a voluntarily member of the crew. He once belonged to a clan, doing much the same work he does now. When Siren—already aware of her need to start tracking her treasure count—saw him in the corner of a tavern with a noteback splayed in front of him, she knew immediately she'd found what she was looking for. And as everyone who has met the Captain knows, what Siren wants Siren gets. She promptly approached his table, told Mourne (named Lavrentios back then) that he was coming with her whether he walked out alongside her or was carried by her ever-present partner Mischief, and left to get a hearty drink at the bar. Mourne put up no resistance before, during, or after his kidnapping. In fact, no one in the crew has ever seen Mourne elicit any sort of strong emotion. That's not to say he's no fun at all. Most times he is indeed somber, but he's also been known to crack a witty remark and his stone-like facade means he does dry humor very well. He's one of the crew members that—again, despite his solemn personality—everyone seems to like. He can effectively handle Rowdy and Riot, he never acts out and causes trouble for Siren or Mischief, and he seems neither intimidated nor impressed by the three witches aboard. He likes to read when he's not accounting, which puts him in favor with Portia, and when the crew is in Indrali territory he's often seen contemplating ethics with the philosopher Astra. It's apparent to astute members of the crew that something obviously happened to Mourne to make him the way he is today. He never speaks about his past, even when prompted, and can suddenly turn melancholy in the middle of a boisterous conversation. |
