The Spark
The Spark
Eisa hatched with a spark in her heart. Although she is part of the Arcanist’s Flight, there is a part of her which has always belonged to the Flamecaller. From the moment of her hatching, she was fascinated by the balls of fire that Sigyn conjures to light the lair, and would often beg the tundra to show her tricks, and to tell stories of the Burning Expanse and the god the Fire Flight serves. For the first weeks of her life, no one could have guessed that she was affected by the magics of the Starfall Isles just as much as her clutch-brother, Jormungandr. As she grew older, dark patches began to appear over her bright scales, growing like Gembond across her body. At first, her parents and the rest of the clan were surprised, but not concerned to see the obsidian growths appear: Gembond was a common occurrence in the Starfall Isles, and a matter of pride. However, when the dark patches did not grow into raised clusters and spread further, beyond the reaches of a normal Gembonding, Loki became concerned. He used every Arcane power and tome he could call upon to research Eisa’s condition, but could find no answers and offer her no help. Eventually, just prior to the Flameforger’s Festival, the black carapace closed over the last of Eisa’s scales. On that day, Eisa wept: she felt that her only connection to the Fire Flight – her flame-bright scales – had been extinguished, and not even Sigyn could offer her comfort. In the days that followed, Loki made a particular effort to search out the Flamecaller’s Glowing Embers for his daughter. The whole clan brought every Ember they found back to the lair as gifts for Eisa. On the final night before the end of the festival, Eisa curled up amid the Embers, feeling their warm glow through her carapace, and fell asleep. She woke on the final day of the festival with flames dancing in her eyes: the Embers had attracted a Fire Sprite, which was flittering just in front of her snout. Eisa sat up with a squeak of surprise and unfurled her wings – only to realise that that something had changed overnight. When she had moved her wings, they had showered the Embers in glimmering, red-gold sparks. With every movement, more sparks grew out of the black of her carapace and dropped, tiny droplets of harmless energy that dissolved or cooled into a tiny flake of ash. Although Eisa is proud to wear her allegiance to the Flamecaller across her skin, it has its downsides. The rest of the Clan at first assumed that her sparks would burn where they touched, and so kept their distance. However, as a dragon of the Fire Flight, Sigyn was never afraid to be close to her, and slowly the others realised that there was nothing to fear. Now it is only strangers who are wary of her at first because of her abnormal skin. This has made Eisa quite lonely - despite everything, she is still the friendliest and most cheerful of Loki's offspring, and wishes she could chatter with strangers as her siblings do. However, she still hopes one day to find a Fire Flight dragon who has no need to fear her appearance - or her Fire Sprite, who can sometimes be a little picky about the company she keeps! ...by Riserae |
