QUOTE: "I don't believe in magic!!! And that's all there is to it!"

ALTERED STATE

STORY 1

Meringue is naive and clueless! Really, she just lies to herself. And, yeah, she's a little whacky. When other dragons meet her, she puts on her best clothes and smile, becomes the hostess-with-the-mostest, and smoozes her guests, acting in all manner of proper decor and taking interest in the goings-on of their lives. But when they are gone, the act is over.

Ironically, for some strange reason she never fools her husband, Pagus. Furthermore, she really has no idea what is going on in her own home aside from fussing over him and her child. Firstly, she broods about Pagus' position in the clan and then, concerning the child, her lovely child, Spria, who she claims she doesn't know anymore, all she does is fret. "What has gotten into her lately," she complains.

The truth is, Meringue is terribly deceived! Danger is living right under her own roof and she is unaware of it's presence. She knows something is wrong, but she is looking only to the physical. She has forgotten about the magical, and the spiritual, to some degree. Well, she hasn't really forgotten. She knows that it is real, but she won't acknowledge it. She closes her eyes and refuses to believe.

But all that is about to change.

STORY 2

There was unabated tears, then stunned, catatonic silence.

Spira has hit the road.
Flown the coop.
Left the lair.

Safely masqued in Shadow, IT lurks. Mama beware.

STORY 3

What? Another one of her plans foiled! How did Pagus know? Meringue, pacing the lair and smacking a few items down to the floor as her tail whips around in a furious anxiety, finally calms down and settles on a rock to contemplate her next move.

She knows where Spira is, she thinks, and she had made plans to verify the location. Months of sleuthing had paid off, especially since she paid over a million treasure to acquire assistance from a shadier-type character which uses questionable contacts. Little did she suspect how questionable. Pagus, aware of her back-room dealings, had checked out the hired detective. In fact, he set up a false identity to meet this dragon and discern his nature; for it seemed that this simple act always resulted in revealing more than meets the eye.

"Oh, what must I do to hide my plans from Pagus!," she cries in utter desperation.

~Starlight18

A repa'im, which is a giant spirit of the dead, the shade, has taken poor Spira.
In Ugaritic (an ancient Semitic language pre-dating Hebrew), Rp'um are divine residents of the underworld.
English repa'im as "shades" captures the "otherworldly, shadowy nature" of the living-dead residents of the underworld.
