“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”
The new recruits are at it - again. Of course, I can't really say much, I was their age once and had my share of wild times with friends. I remember the time we all got together and heckled a Hoarfrost Mauler until it simply gave up and sat down, unwilling to keep up the game any longer. Or the time we found an Ice Sprite and chased it halfway across the Icefields only to realize it was just a trick of the light. The days of my youth were many and just as wild, but my level of tolerance for such behavior from the recruits is quite low. When I enter their midst, the playful shouting drops and they immediately settle into line. A gaggle of them, young and full of life, ready for whatever this humble ice clan was getting ready to throw at them. Who would be leaving for a lifelong servitude to the Icewarden? Who would be staying to watch over hatchlings, defend our clan, or even become the next leader when Zakaria passes? These are things I must decide now, when they are still young and ready to be shaped into what they will be for the rest of their lives. Three young tundras group together, looking concerned and worried for whatever may happen to them. I go to them first, giving them a warm look - or at least, what I hope to be a warm look - and trying to let them know that it is alright, they have nothing to fear from me. I'm an enemy to our enemies, not an enemy to our own. Hatchlings and young dragons are the future this world demands, and who would I be to take that from the world? "No need for worry," I tell them with what I think to be a gentle voice but probably comes across as blunt, uncaring. It isn't that I don't care, its that the functionality of caring outwardly can sometimes stop working and it takes actual physical effort to remember to show others through words or actions that I care. I do, trust me on that. "No need for worry," I repeat, trying to force the kindness into my voice and likely failing horribly. "No one is serving the Icewarden yet. You are all needed here far more than you are needed with Him. We are in need of warriors, my young dragon friends. Are you willing to do what it takes to become those warriors?" One of the tundras puffs out her chest, tail flicking and wings spreading so subtly that I could have missed the true meaning of her stance if she hadn't spoken. "I am ready to learn." I smile and nod. "That's what I like to hear."
