The only child of two traveling dragons, Gemma grew up without her parents around... and so she internalized self-loathing. Though Keahi cared for her as if she were his own, it just wasn't the same as being raised by her own parents. They left me here because I'm ugly. I'm too fat and heavy to ever be loved. It was Cupid who finally, after months of trying, changed her mind: he never wavered in his insistence that she was beautiful, never shied away from her tearful outbursts, never supported her urges to self-harm. He continued to pay attention to her, bring her gifts, despite all of her self-proclaimed negative qualities. Slowly, Gemma came around to his way of thinking: How can I be ugly if he pays special attention to me? Me, over everyone else in the clan? However, it wasn't until her first Starfall Celebration that Gemma finally rejected her self-loathing once and for all. Cupid insisted that the Endangered Cosmos accent was made for her, and once he got her into it, she was surprised at how marvelous she felt.

And she has found that changing up her appearance helps; playing dress-up makes her feel pretty. Or at least, it challenges her negative thoughts.
Together, she and Cupid had their first nest: two boys and a girl. She named them after treasures, for they were precious to her. Even after they had grown and become independent, she made sure she knew how much she loved them.
When Blossom stumbled into Deoradhan-Kunibert, Gemma recognized the pain in the Tundra's eyes: here was another dragon who loathed herself. And Gemma's heart went out to her.
She spent much of her time with Blossom, offering the comfort of a fellow body if nothing else. And slowly, the other she-dragon began to open up, to confess her feelings of worthlessness and pain.
These were things that Gemma could relate to.
When Blossom left, Gemma resolved to listen to any of her clanmates who needed a compassionate ear without judgement.

When Zoraida came to the Free Proton Spirits, and tensions rose, Gemma knew that something was wrong.
She went with compassion to the agitated Nocturne, accepted her frustration and fear, offered counsel. Though she was disappointed in Zoraida's hesitancy to accept Aix's aid, she wholeheartedly approved of her choice to spend time with Hinata - more friends meant more help.
