Well, if thought is all there is to it, then perhaps Mae is not quite as she seems. Every creature, every hatchling, that are taken in is for a reason. Mae would never tell the others, but most of the time, they are taken for a profit. Parents would pay a lot for the perfect child. Clans would pay a decent amount for a good warrior. It was something Mae knew from personal experience. After all, how else would an ice dragon end up in the brightness of the sunbeam ruins? For some reason, the clan had wanted her. That was something Mae would be forever grateful for. She knew that some dragons, most dragons, seemed to eventually find their way into serving one of the deities. Those dragons were never heard from again. So, since this clan had saved her from her fate, Mae decided to do all she could to benefit the clan. She got stronger, learned to hunt, refined her skills. She trained for hours on end. Exept, the clan seemed to grow frightened of her, of her power. She wondered why. It was only after talking to a dragon that had a little too much to drink that she found out why. Being on the edge of shadow territory had always been a risky spot. It was hardly hidden how Shadow and light dragons felt about each other. And although Mae was an ice dragon, she looked shadow through and through. So, not wanting her clan mates to fear her, Mae began to look for a mage, someone who could change her appearance. Someone who could make her look like the pentacle of light. Because sneaky as Mae may be, she did not like the fear. Asking someone in the clan was not the wisest. Their arts were for fighting, and Mae did not want risk ending up injured. So, Mae moved further, with a promise to return soon. There were no other clans here, at least, not in light territory. It was a known fact, because nobody wanted to live this close to the shadow flight. It made Mae wonder briefly why the clan chose that spot on the first place. Mae was brought out of her musings by a sound in the trees to her right. She did not turn and look. If she looked, whoever it was would know she knew they were there. It was better to let them think she didn’t see them. Eventually, Mae found what seemed to be a path. A well traveled one at that. This should hopefully give lead her to a clan. It seemed, however, that whoever was tailing her had other ideas. They dropped out of the trees onto the path in front of her. They tried to be intimidating, but with the size difference... it was a little hard. What stood before her was a nocturne that wasn’t even a fourth of her size. But Mae had fought in enough battles to know better than to underestimate an opponent based on size alone. The nocturne stood tall, or rather, as tall as he could, and demanded that she ‘state her business’. Mae was sure he was surprised to hear what she wanted. There was no reason to hold back the details, she was looking for a mage that could change how she looked. The nocturne narrowed his eyes, before gesturing for the guardian to follow him. It was times like these Mae envied the smaller dragon breeds. The nocturne flew through the trees, often hopping on a branch, or landing on one so that Mae could catch up. The guardian huffed to herself, she barely had room to fit through the trees, let alone open her wings. When they reached their destination, Mae was surprised at what she saw. It was not like she imagined it would be. In fact, it was very much like Home. Dragons moving everywhere, Hatchlings playing, and hunters getting ready to head out. She was snapped out of her thoughts by the nocturne from earlier calling her name. Which she had never given him. Eyes narrowed in suspicion, Mae followed him to the far corner of the clan, where there was a small wooden structure. Out of it came a tiny dragon, a fae. They asked what she wanted, and she told them. She wanted to look brighter. The fae gave the dark nocturne a questioning glance, to which he merely shrugged. It took quite some time, but eventually the fae found something that would work. Apparently there was not a lot of demand for light in the tangled woods. Go figure. The mage gave her a paper with many odd symbols on it. Said it should work, but to please leave the clan before trying. No need to cause alarm. Mae thanked the tiny dragon and headed back to the path she had come in on. The nocturne followed her. After she had gotten a decent distance away, Mae took the paper and did just as the mage had said. Sure enough, when she looked down at herself, she saw gold. The color of light. Further inspection showed that her wings still looked dark, but Mae wasn’t bothered by it. She was light colored! She would belong! No dragon in her clan would have any reason to fear her! With a spring in her step, Mae kept along the path, untill she remembered that when she started there had been no path. At some point, she would have to break off to the side. And hope she wouldn’t get lost. With a sigh, Mae checked to see if the nocturne was still there. He was. Mae asked if he knew the way back. He, fortunately, did. Soon enough, the dark needles of the trees began to turn a golden color, as if kissed by the sun. Mae was so caught up in her joy that she almost didn’t notice that the nocturne was still tailing her. Almost. She asked him what he was doing. He told her he was following her, and would continue to do so. He said he wanted to join her clan. Which, honestly, was not what Mae had been expecting. But... it may work out. He was strong, Mae could tell that much from his actions, and he was practically the epitome of a shadow dragon. All he was missing was the purple eyes. The clan would be so focused on his darkness, that Mae would shine in comparison. So, she brought him home. The clan seemed happy to see her, and weary of the new dragon. As she had hoped. She got the leader to let him stay. Unsurprisingly, her plan worked. How could it not? Except, the dragon won’t leave her alone now. She’s heard whispers that he’s her shadow, and it has stopped bothering her. If he wants to follow her around, who is she to disagree? |
