Who was he in the past?

Nyx doesn't know. Too much transpired to make sense of the rights and wrongs engraved on his back. The names of clans no longer with Sornieth turns and claws his spine.

Once it was the Clan of No Name.

Then it became Temperance.

Following the attack of Shade and the deaths of many members... the ruins of Temperance regrouped and formed Clan Pendulum. And he was queen, wed to his beautiful Raine, to the moon itself, to grace incarnate. He was happy. He was Nyx.

Then dragons began to remember. A piece of the past reflected through the muddied waters of Temperance's graves. Nightmares of events replayed in distorted visions and plagued dreams until individuals in Pendulum acted to erase the memories of those who knew what he had done.

The Switch was not a phenomenon but a familiar. It took existence in the past and altered the past and present, blending realities of lives taken and lives saved, forgoing the existence of certain dragons to resurrect others. An incorrigible ruin emerged where time and space warped to accommodate the familiar's desires, claiming the lives of Nyx's and Raine's offspring and killing many others. The wounded stragglers remained, and with the help of inividuals from an allied clan, Nyx finally remembered.

The familiar was his, born of his greatest desire: to return Raine to life. His mate perished when Temperance fell, and Nyx could not live without her at his side. But in doing so his love for Raine built into obsession, feeding the Switch's power. Nyx's familiar resurrected ancient powers and invoked use of Chaos, the Shade, to rearrange the deaths and save old lives at the expense of past, present, and future.

There was no way forward without admitting to what he feared the most. Raine died, and Nyx lived, and his sky was void without her light. It was a second death, as the Raine resurrected by the Switch vanished shortly after Nyx's familiar disappeared. Other dragons resurrected by the familiar weakened considerably, adopting old wounds now mitigated by the healers present. Some retained Shade-like traces in their bodies. Others destroyed by the Switch took on new forms. His offspring changed, permanently altered by the familiar's magic.

Somewhere along the way Nyx accepted Raine's death and his role in everything that came after. He did not deny the charges brought forth against him by his own offspring and the acting elders of Clan Pendulum. To serve time in a cell is not justice for those who suffered as result of his actions, but it is penance, and Nyx will abide by the sentence until the survivors of his familiar find peace.

He grieves Raine less in the present. He has not forgotten the love who stood by him and protected him for years, but as time moves forward, the heart can heal. Karina, who once acted as his bodyguard, gouged a place in Nyx's heart. He fell in love with the assassin, and finds a semblance of meaning to life in her reciprocated affections, complicated as things may be.

Perhaps the others pity him, but the visits have not ceased. Karina shares stories of the outside world, and life continues in its slow, crawling way.

With the Order of Sera Noire established after Clan Pendulum was overthrown... Nyx finds himself in a strange spot, both a prisoner to the Order but from the previous clan. Sera Noire has not visited once, nor has Nyx's progeny Prometheus. Karina once brought his son Ares to see him, but the Skydancer did not reveal the extent of the Order's influence or answer questions related to the transfer of power, leading Nyx to question what took place leading to the expulsion of previous clan elders and the council overseeing Pendulum's dragons.
