EMALIEN

.eldest of the shadeguard.

  ABOUT.
Emalien awoke on the northernmost edge of the Sunbeam Ruins, steeped in the shadow emanating from the Viridian Labyrinth. He could not tell how long he'd lain dormant in what had once been an abandoned gallery lined with columns. Fragments of sculpture lay scattered in the rubble. He recognized the curl of grapevines in stone and the bas-relief shapes of dragons in flight, their wings shattered by time.

Beyond this, he hungered for the source of Shade he sensed lurking in the forest.

Born of Lightweaver's essence, his clan of Imperials had once been a group destined to resist the pull of the curse which bound and reanimated their dead. They began as a family of maize-colored dragons created in the light of an untainted world, protected by the strength of their watchful deity. The breaking of the shield over Sornieth altered that path.

In the aftermath and the overwhelming rise of the Shade, what remained of their number volunteered to become protectors immune to the evils of corrupting influence. Able to consume their foe and wield its power in the service of dragonkind, they traveled the length and breadth of the world, their scales darkening as they aged and fed. Soon every dragon among them sported only the bright wings, pale manes, and maize limbs which became the badge of their office. Although he was the first to awaken, Emalien knew that the younger Shadeguard would soon follow as he grew in strength, their sleep tied to his own.

This binding had been completed in the earliest days when it looked as if success might be assured. Without Shade to consume, he and his kin became sluggish and subsided into a torpor that could keep them alive through the centuries it might take for their ancient enemy to regain its strength. So long as Shade threatened Sornieth, so too would the Shadeguard live to defend the land.

Without the energy to summon his armor, Emalien remained wary of being seen. He devoured the smaller traces of dark energy that the monstrous presence in the Labyrinth left behind as it moved. Each time he gathered the darkness to himself the world grew more distinct. He smelled the rich warm earth, felt sunlight scattering on his faceted wings, and tasted the promise of summer on the wind.

He stalked the moving well of power, confident that only an Emperor dragon could have drawn him from his slumber. He marveled at its presence. All Imperials knew what calamity their deaths could bring, but this one had either been summoned or was the product of a recent battlefield littered with the slain.

What extremity could have lead a clan to attempt to control such a beast? He mused. Only fools and meddlers would try.

He drew the Emperor on a chase lasting several days, draining the Shade from its ravaged accretion of bodies until he could turn his newfound strength into rebuilding his armor, a protection as much a part of his flesh as his own scales and fangs. What began as a dull black carapace lacing his body soon lightened and lifted into the plates, ridges, and chainwork which served as his last and best defense.

Whorls of light gleamed within the Shade-forged metal, a symbol of the very essence of what it meant to be one of the Shadeguard. Here was evil tempered by an impossible alchemy, purified as it ran in his veins and fueled his spells.

Emalien began what promised to be a long journey by retracing the Emperor's path to the battlefield, then to the clan who had summoned it, and finally to the hired warriors who had trained the fallen dragons. He found Late Lights Company making camp at the site of the ruin that had once been his ancient home.

Zohran.

  NOW.
Tied as he is to the other Shadeguard, Emalien often leaves Zohran for days at a time to aid his newly awakened brethren. Elegy and Ode serve as his guides and guards on these personal missions. He views the pair more as his apprentices than protectors; an amusing diversion he would have to defend if they ran into any real trouble.
