Shadeholders are dragon skins embodied by the Shade. When a dragon dies, the Shade can reincarnate it and use the body to its own benefit. They are essentially the Shade with the ability to walk, talk, and think. They have a hive mind ultimately controlled by the first Shadeholder to ever exist - a Skydancer named Naomi. They are more intelligent in groups, but they often prefer to work alone. A Shadeholder is able to cause conflict in clans by shadetouching a dragon. If a Shadeholder causes a war to break out between clans, any dragons who are killed in the battle surrender the years of life they would have had remaining had they not died in battle to the Shadeholder who caused it. Causing conflict is how Shadeholders keep their dragon bodies youthful. Shadeholders are tricky and maniacal, and they believe that they are god-like. They refer to themselves as "Prophets of the Shade" or simply "The Prophets." It is common for Shadeholders to take after bits of their body's original owner's personality. Even with the pieces of individuality that they express, a drone Shadeholder is nothing without its hive queen. Asrael - born to Nishant and Asra - was born into the Shade. Though he had no mind or soul of his own, the Shade struggled to overtake his body after birth. His determined body refused to surrender to the lifeless claws of the Shade, feeling cheated of its opportunity to live as a mortal dragon. In the end, the Shade prevailed. The most powerful force in all of Sornieth now engulfs Asrael, and he willingly serves his own being and his hive queen by reaping chaos and causing the deaths of unsuspecting dragons. His will is reflective of his physical strength; he pursues everything to his full ability and refuses to give up. His strong bones and slick, lithe figure are unfortunately wasted; a good Shadeholder never gets himself involved in an actual kill. Instead, he stirs up trouble in the minds of other dragons and uses them as pawns in a twisted game to kill off the others. If he had a soul, it would be as dark as his scales. His only life is given to him by the Shade, which began penetrating his body at the moment of conception. Unhappy staying in one place, this migrant worker travels all across Sornieth to cause riots, wars, and mutinies. |
