Maire took in a deep breath, tasting the scent of dragonsteel and embers. Carefully, she took her tongs and turned the piece over, gauging the color of the metal carefully.

“Perhaps a bit more heat, Bofur,” she murmured.

Bofur grunted and pushed the bellows with a little more effort. “Hotter?” he asked. “Won’t the metal melt on you?”

Maire chuckled. “No, not yet. Too cold and the metal is unresponsive; too hot and you risk making it brittle, which would ruin the piece. Just right, though, and you can make wonders.”

“It’s a breastplate,” Bofur grunted. His furry cap slipped a little over his face, and with a toss of his head it flew into a corner of the smithy. Just as well; it was far too hot in the smithy for hats anyways. “What could be so special about it?”

Maire smiled, judged the metal was hot enough, and laid it on the anvil.

“Watch, my dear,” she said, taking up her hammer. “You see, the steel itself is an alloy. It’s made of different metals and compounds that give it the strength, flexiblity, and lightness that its components just don’t have.”

She struck. The resulting chime bounced off the walls of the smithy in a pure, ringing sound.

“Do you hear that, Bofur? That is the sound of creation!”

“Yes, my dear,” said Bofur, who had heard her say similar things many times before.

For a while they worked in silence; he banked the fire and set the iron rods that she would need later to heat as she hammered the metal into a large, curved sheet.

Finally, Bofur spoke again.

“That doesn’t look like a breastplate.”

“Mmhmm.”

“So…?”

Maire finished beating a section into uniform thickness and put her hammer down. “You’ve seen me make a sword before.”

“Yes?”

She traced the outlines of the breastplate into the metal. “You’ve also seen me sharpen swords.”

“Yes.”

“Well, a breastplate is a bit more complex. This one is going to be made of several jointed segments that will fit together. The designs are in those plans I drew up last week.” The metal was too cool to work now; Maire eyed it critically.

“So you’ll cut the pieces out from that big sheet you were hammering out earlier and then rivet them together.” Bofur finished, his eyes running along the surface of the metal now too. His hands twitched, as if he were mapping out the breastplate’s dimensions in his head.

“Precisely!” Maire grinned. “Let’s take this over to the trough so I can quench it. We can start cutting tomorrow.”

“And until tomorrow?” Bofur asked, answering her grin slyly.

“I have an idea,” Maire said, laughing, “and it doesn’t involve that hat of yours!”

“Oh, doesn’t it?” Bofur all but purred, an excited gleam coming to his eyes.

“We’d better take those rods off the fire, too – I imagine we’ll be busy for quite a while.”
