Biography

The heroine that NEVER gives up!

Undyne is a proud soul, putting her stock in many things. She trusts in her brute strength, an attribute which has yet to fail her. She sings the praises of her clan, mighty and strong. And most importantly, she puts before all else her Charge, which she is more proud of than anything else in the world.

Some Guardians spend lifetimes Searching, only to die unfulfilled, sometimes alone. To find one’s Charge is to meet the very highest requirements of one’s existence, and Undyne believes herself blessed to have found her Charge in the family of her ruler so early in life. At a young age, she left her nest alone, determined to prove herself as a prime example of her venerable breed. Her travels took her through the whole of her homeland, the Southern Icefield, and when this yielded no results, she had no qualms about boarding a ship with nothing more than the eyepatch on her face in order to sail off to new lands.

Something called her northward, step by step. She pushed herself through the windy reaches of the Reedcleft Ascent, and then through the smoldering flatlands of the Ashfall Waste, never once giving in to fear, exhaustion, or any other force. Undyne had promised herself that she would find her Charge or die trying, and to stop when her whole heart screamed “So close, so close!” would be nothing short of failure. As such, she arrived in Dragonhome bone-weary but certain that she was closer than ever before.

It was there that she discovered Asgore’s underground kingdom in all its splendor, and from the moment she knelt before him and his dear family, she knew that this was the end of her Search and the beginning of the life she had so desperately longed for during the endless days and nights spent alone. She pledged herself to his service rather formally, but in truth, she was always closer than just a guard. Asgore took her under his wing as a sort of pupil, teaching her all she needed to know to thrive in her new home under the earth. He was so kind and so gentle, a stark contrast to her bullheaded nature, but his words resonated with her all the same. She became all the more devoted to her Charge in this time, desperate to meet Asgore’s benevolent expectations with every act.

She also became close with Alphys during this time, before the great upheaval that cost Asgore his kingdom. Whenever Undyne was not at the side of the royal family, she spent her time with Alphys, close at hand with her brash ways and protective heart through thick and thin alike. Truly Alphys was the first dragon she connected with outside Asgore’s immediate family.

But then disaster struck, and the kingdom she had come to know and love collapsed in the blink of an eye, leaving only fragments of its glory behind. With the other survivors, she trekked to the Tangled Wood, where Clan Dark-Blood offered them sanctuary. Since Asgore accepted the offer, so did she, and they still reside in the dark forest to this day, with Undyne now the captain of her lost kingdom’s sparse guard.

As captain, she enjoys both a great deal of freedom and responsibility. She has the power to go wherever she wishes whenever she wishes, and can better organize the rest of the guard as a result. Her knowledge of the Tangled Wood has become truly intimate, and there is nowhere an enemy could hide from her, not really. On the other hand, though, she must devote much of her time to training new warriors to fill the roles of those lost in the depths of Dragonhome. One of her students is Asgore’s son himself, Asriel, who she feels a great deal of affection for on account of her Charge. After all, protecting the family, not just Asgore, is her divine purpose, and she loathes to imagine Asriel suffering for any reason. Another of her pupils, Papyrus, is a different story, and she pushes him to his limits constantly, only for him to rebound with twice as much enthusiasm before. They spar relentlessly some days, trading friendly banter under the guise of sharp words, and at the end of the day, they find themselves sitting together for a meal, laughing at all the mistakes they made along the way. This is the part of being captain of the guard that Undyne cherishes most, and she wouldn’t trade this connection for anything.

Well, perhaps she would trade it for Mettaton’s disappearance. Not much can bring her down, but if you ask what her least favorite thing is in Clan Dark-Blood is, she would name the flashy, frivolous spiral in a heartbeat. Performance art isn’t for everyone, it seems.
