As the daughter of Kuro, Equinox was raised on secrets. By the time she was old enough to take her first flight, she'd not only mastered, but perfected her mother's arts: the inscrutable mask, the eye for strength and flaws, the plans upon endless circular plans. Groomed and pampered, she lived beneath her mother's attentive wing, watching Kuro's games and dances of wit and will with wide, attentive eyes. But as her skills grew, so too did her resentment. Equinox tired of schemes and ambitions - tired of her mother's control.

As she grew, Equinox met Kuro's attempts to draw her into diplomatic subterfuge first with disinterest, and then an increasingly icy hostility. Eventually, she renounced her mother altogether, taking it upon herself to uncover truth in contrast to her mother's web of lies. The older Coatl, reluctantly seeing the writing on the wall, finally gave her protege up for lost. For many of Bendanas' sympathizers, it was a breath of relief to see the youngster turn her back on her mother's ways. For Kuro, who from that day on quietly removed her cherished daughter from her confidence, it was as though she had lost her child. Though she remained the doting mother at heart, she could see that her daughter had other friends now, and other mentors: the laughing Urda; the watchful Arod. There was no place left for Mother, and a distant relationship of cold cordiality was the best the two could manage. That is, until Dusk.

Her son, the youngest of her offspring, was Equinox's pride and joy, and she indulged him with the praise and freedom she had never had. The young Imperial was adventurous and eager, ranging far from the lair to explore the world around with bright-eyed wonder. On one such adventure, the hatchling wandered too far. His mother heard his cries for help and dashed to his aid, but she was too late to save her son from the Dominance patrol. Though she wandered in search of him until her feathers bleached with hunger and fatigue, she never found him. In her grief, the bereaved mother sought out her own for comfort. Loss brought them together as nothing else had, and while the two remain in separate worlds, the shadow of Kuro is now very much in evidence behind the jaded eyes of Equinox.
