“Hey, there, ma’am, I’m gonna have to ask you to take a step back.” The Ridgeback looked at Heather seriously, his hat sitting low over his eyes.

Heather knew she didn’t look like she’d been raised in the wildlands of the Windsinger’s steppes, despite the distinct light green of her eyes. Her iridescent hide was clear of scratches and shone in the sun. All the same, she’d seen her share of ursidae and serpentas. It was, in fact, her job these days to make sure the captured quarry was fed and watered when Moor was away.

“Don’t worry. You can trust me,” she called back.

The Ridgeback didn’t seem convinced. “It’s not that I’m worried, ma’am…” With that, he suddenly shouted for Heather to move out of the way.

The marbled serpenta charged. The Ridgeback dashed between her and the angry creature, snapping it in the flank with his tail. A jab from his horn discouraged any further aggressive behavior as the serpents pawed the ground and hissed.

Heather felt color rise to her cheeks. She dealt with creatures like this every day, thanks in part to her mate’s job. She knew better than to trust them... but she knew better than to fear.

He took a slow, deep breath, and smiled at her. “I just don’t trust the creatures I don't know,” he finished. He gave her a long look before Heather realized that she, too, was a creature he probably didn't trust. “I’m Kurth. I heard a band of monster hunters live here? Led by a Guardian and a Fae?”

Heather gave a nod. “They call this their home when they aren’t out on a job.”

Kurth looked at the serpenta, the latest in a long line of monster acquisitions that Heather was less than pleased about. “Glad to hear I've made it to the right place, then. See, I’d like a chance to tame ‘em.”

Kurth was born and raised a child of Wind, born to wander and fly. His mother was a headmaster of a flying school in Wind territory, learning to use his powerful wings to fly long, fast, and beautifully: not an easy feat for a Ridgeback of his size. Despite his excellent grasp of flying, he was always happiest in the company of the familiars he takes under his expansive wings. His parents were supportive: after all, they were both teachers, striving to bring out the best in their students. If their son was more inclined to raise and tame familiars than fly, they would be happy to see him happy.

Kurth happily learned from his new teachers for his whole young life, friendly with the students that would come and go to learn the strength and beauty of flying properly. Kurth became friends with many of those students, two of whom would change his life. He kept in touch with Lightning and Hydra, and eventually heard about their monster-hunting endeavors. Kurth doesn’t have a violent bone in his body, and hates to see a good creature wasted. He’s managed to save many redeemable creatures in his tenure with the Tempest Chase, and trained others to help the hunters with their jobs. Outside of his familiar friends, Kurth keeps to himself. Sometimes he spends time with Heather, Moor, Irwin, or the hatchlings who seek out Kurth’s friendly dreameater to chase away their nightmares. If one wants to find him, he is often on the outskirts of the camp, fashioning new leather leads, making sure his familiar crates and enclosures are secure, or making sure they are all happy and well-fed. If he can’t be found, sometimes it's easier to look for his dreameater, since they are always together.

Like many Wind dragons, Kurth is interested in seeing all he can see and going everywhere he can go. Of course, he finds new familiar species the most interesting at all, and keeps record of all the familiars he catches in his book that he always keeps with him. There are some few he believes he’ll never see, and still others he hopes to at least meet one day. In the meantime, he is happy with what he has, and has his dreameater to chase the fears away that he’ll never actually see that glittering green bug.

Kurth's dreameater, Leanne, has been with him for a long time, almost as long as Kurth can remember. Despite her monstrous appearance, she's quite friendly and a favorite of the clan's hatchlings. She was a gift from his mother, perhaps to steal away the nightmares that plagued him as a young Ridgeback. He may still have nightmares, but he is a strong adult Ridgeback, and would never admit it. All the same, he is very sympathetic to the hatchlings that also have nightmares. Kurth and Leanne are often surrounded by temporary cots just in case one of the young dreamers come calling for company on dark nights.

» Despite his ultimate care for animals, Kurth sees himself as a part of a food-chain just like any other animal. Most dragons are at least mildly omnivorous, and Kurth has no qualms about animals playing a part in a dragon’s buffet. All the same, Kurth eats more flora than fauna.
