"What happens after death? You see, I'll never know... and neither will you."
Mayo had always felt uneasy around his clanmates. His mother, so scientific and logical, his father...so cautious. He'd never been told of what kept his father away for so long in the day. He only knew that it had made him protective of the hatchling, and Mayo wasn't too fond of it. However, he wasn't ignorant. He knew of his brother, so calm and serene in appearance, walking about the clan. Mayo wasn't fooled. He'd seen the glint of red in his brother's eyes. He'd seen just how strong he was. Even as hatchlings, Mayo could tell his brother wasn't draconian. He could tell his father's tendencies had arisen from it as well, almost as if he feared Mayo would end up like big, tough Michaelis. Well, he was wrong.

As Mayo grew, he began to look into it himself. He studied just about every form of magic in Sornieth, trying his best to discover just what his brother was, and frankly, what he himself could be. It was during these studies that he found the truth: his brother was a demon, a creature who stole souls. For a short time, Mayo feared he would fall to his brother, but in the end, logic won out. If he were to be killed, he'd be dead by now. Besides, his brother wouldn't have let him discover this if that were the case. For now, he was safe. Further research revealed his father to be a Reaper, a being of pain who gathered souls. He found this rather ironic, seeing as the two creatures were often deemed mortal enemies. He, however, didn't hold those qualities. At least, as far as he knew. It was this discovery that finally abated Mayo's curiosity, and he halted his research. He would not interfere in this.

Mayo didn't know just how wrong he was.

He'd acquired a thirst for knowledge in the course of his research, specifically in the artifacts of old. He searched for old relics and scripture, following every hunch he crossed, at least after he convinced his father that he'd be safe. He'd feel any piece of history discovered was a success, and a magical artifact was even greater. It was on one of these expeditions, however, that threw him off the course of his life for the remainder of time.

It was supposed to be a small search. He'd likely find some stone slab with archaic text, or if his hunch was correct, it'd just be another plain stone. It was deep in the heart of the Tangled Wood, his element of birth. He'd never felt fear when traversing the thorn-ridden paths. He felt at home there. Besides, he'd studied defensive magic in the case that something did attack him. This day, however, was different. As he wandered, the shadows stretching over his shimmering figure, he felt an odd, foreboding feeling. Today, it was as if the shadows reached for him, trying to halt him, to turn him away. No, it had to be an illusion. He must be drawing close to the artifact.

Shortly after this thought passed through his head, he came across something odd. The brambles seemed to have converged on an old structure. Could this be what he was looking for?! He felt a surge of joy. This was one of his biggest finds yet! The structure was of some dark stone, likely obsidian. Runes were etched into the pillars that made what he soon realized was akin to a gazebo. There, in the center, was a pedestal, and upon that pedestal was a shimmering stone. He felt that odd tingle once more, but he shook it off. This was too great a discovery for trivial things like that! He had to examine it. As he stepped forward, he didn't realize that the tingle wasn't some paranoid twinge, but instead the sense of strong magic in the area. He didn't realize that the runes began to glow as he stepped inside. All he knew as he stepped forward was that this artifact must have some secret to reveal, and he would be the one to reveal it. It was then that the stone, seeming to have caught what little light broke through the hole in the center of the roof, began to glow. He only had the time to feel a moment's confusion before the shadows, once his friend and protector, struck.

He could not move, straining against the binds on his legs. He flapped his wings, hissing in shock. He knew he was weaker than his brother, but surely he could break free of such a feeble hold! He opened his maw to let out a roar of frustration when one shadow snaked across his face, silencing the drake. The stone only grew brighter, letting off an ominous glow. Blues and purples danced along the shard, reflecting off Mayo's face, which only now seemed to change as fear finally set in. He couldn't break free, and he couldn't call for help. It was time for magic. He was shocked, however, to find he could not reach his own source. He couldn't tap into his magical defense! His eyes widened in terror, and he began to struggle. What was going to happen to him?! The shadows tightened their grip, and he found he could no longer move. He felt as if his heart were about to burst forth from his chest and flee while it still could, his body still straining against his bonds. His fearful panic was interrupted by a bright flash.

He was blinded by a swirl of purple and blue, the colors burning their image into his vision. He felt as if someone were blasting him with the sands of the Shifting Expanse, digging beneath the scales. Instead of a searing pain, however, he only felt cold. It was as if the attack were freezing him as he swore it tore him apart. He felt the gritty substance get into his mouth, his nose, his ears...his eyes watered at the stinging cold, and he couldn't stop coughing. Suddenly, he could move once more. Without a second glance, he leaped from the structure, crashing to the tangled growth beyond. He lost his balance, falling onto his side as he struggled to move. The cold, however, hadn't left him. In fact, it only seemed to be spreading. With a final shudder, he collapsed into the shadows, which now seemed to embrace the poor drake.

Mayo awoke some time later. How much time had passed was uncertain, but he knew one thing. Something was wrong. He pulled himself into a sitting position, straining from the exertion. He recalled the cold, the pain...his eyes widened as he realized the glow was still there. He scrambled to his feet, fear seizing him once more as he whirled around, but was stunned by what he saw. The gazebo was swamped in an odd blue mist, the thorns of the Wood engulfing the structure. It was as if they'd been waiting for the stone to disappear. That was when he realized the stone was gone. Then, where was the glow coming from? He looked down, only to freeze. There, ong his chest, was a diamond of stone, glowing veins connecting it to his form. It was the same as the artifact.

After the initial fear, he began to inspect the damage done. It only led to more questions. His sparkling hide seemed tougher than usual, akin to stone, but he could move. He knew that the glowing appearance was some sort of magic, but what, he didn't know. Tapping into his own reserves revealed a slight change in execution, but a drastic change in power. His spells were almost cast as soon as he thought of the need for them, thorns moving and shadows retreating at a whim. After some time, the pieces finally began to fall into place. The mist was a fine powder that had once been the stone. It had gotten into his system through his face, it seemed, and likely converged in specific areas, connected by veins that pumped the powder. But...why was he still cold? That revelation came as a shock to Mayo, seeing only one explanation.

He was stone. The magic within him had kept him alive, but...he peered at his paw, confirming his fear. He was made of the same dark stone as the structure. He felt numb at this realization. Was he alive? Did he have his own will? Would he be tied to this Shade-forsaken place? It was then he saw the small plaque at the base of the structure, the only thing left untouched. Something drew him to it.

"The Reaper burnt. The Savior froze. One takes souls. The other saves them."

Mayo could only stare. His father was a Reaper. Had...had he become a Seavior? What did that mean? What was he supposed to do? He left with questions running through his head, his crystalline form letting off it's own glow. He may be cold, he may be stone, and he may be changed, but the flame of knowledge burned brighter than ever as he left, wondering just what this meant. He would discover his new role in this world.

His brother was the demon; a being who stole souls from the innocent...

His father was the Reaper; a being who took souls when their time came...

Mayonakahoshi would oppose them both. He would come to save souls, sparing them, letting them live long past their prime.

He was the Savior, and he would show mercy to all who presented their souls to him. No one would be stealing his souls from Sornieth.
