Biography

Uh-oh, looks like this shadowy assassin wandered a little too far from her lair (180358, wolfcathybrid), and now she's off to see the world! If ever you feel the urge to exalt, she'd really appreciate it if you could just return her home instead, or to the 'Dragons Off To See The World' thread, here.

Travel Log

wolfcathybrid
Inspired by the local rogue Iskala, Caelum (18944748) and her sister Caeswyn (18944747) decided to resort to a life of crime. Although their official titles differ, Caelum preferring to go by 'assassin' and Caeswyn preferring to go by 'mercenary' , they work together, and are rarely separate. They keep their base of operations with the Clan of Whispering Willows, and in return for being allowed stay they both promised never to harm the clan, and often use their skills to help in whatever way possible. They often work closely with Iskala, as they consider her their mentor.

Caelum is in many ways her sister. Together they are a pair of shadows, rarely speaking to anyone but Iskala and anyone they have business with, however brief. Stay away, if you can avoid it. They are not to be messed with. They set off from home in an attempt to find more business.

Schattenfeuer
Sadly, Clan Plague-Fang had no work for those two assassins. So, Caelum and her sister went on with their journey.

HauntedHeart
The two sisters wondered deep into Shadow Clan, there they came upon Haunted House Domain. Here they stayed, resting their feet and weapons. Before again taking off into the night without a word.

Saints
The two sister went on their journey and stumbled upon an Arcane Clan and had stayed quite long and helped a lot! The two must go on their journey and look for new places! (Caelum has babes)

The two sisters decide to stop by their home clan and visit, and while there decide they would be able to do more work if they split up for a while. They promise to stay in touch and visit each other as often as possible.

EmeraldJubilee
At the clan Aurectri, Caelum learned from the best in the clan, including the queen. When she left, she had learned about ten different was to make a poison, and had trained beside the Queen's own assassins, even making friends with the murderous twins. Though the clan was a tad creepy, the knowledge she picked up here will truly be invaluable to her.

Kapara
Caelum's next stop was a discreet caravanserai in the pale Lightning canyon. The quiet skydancer was unobserved amongst the bustle. Tatsuya, ex-leader of the Khotan Oasis, a powerful Shadow clan. He had foolishly incited a war with a Light clan then fled to Lightning in cowardice, abandoning his followers. An anonymous patriot had written this to Caelum in a letter, begging her "assistance".

Caelum made her way unnoticed over to a tent on the edge of the settlement. According to her information, he spends his nights there. She landed on the central pole of the tent, leaning down to catch his conversation.

... around to the wing. Spear-dragons can take on the war-beasts. But that will leave the Pedirka clan on the west vulnerable. The voice of Vin, a military expert.

Who's on the west? Tatsuya himself.

La Guajira and Richtersveld. You're acquainted with Richtersveld's clan matriarch, are you not?

I'll go tonight. If we can get their help, well, we may actually stand a chance of winning this war.

Tatsuya left the tent, completely unaware of Caelum's presence. The assassin herself was lost in thought. It seems her next target would not be the commander after all. The "patriot" should do nicely as a replacement.

It was laughably easy. Get in, get out- flaunt a piece of jewelry around, then travel to a set of coordinates to receive payment. It wasn't Caelum's usual line of work- Caeswyn was the thief, not her- but the pay was too good to pass up for such a laughably easy job. As soon as she had recieved the note with the pendant attached, she had instantly sent back a reply- Sold. The webwing who had delivered the job request clutched her small piece of paper tightly before zipping off again without a word.

Caelum had watched the bird go, off to deliver the message. But as soon as it was out of sight, she got to work. Pendant slipped over her head, resting securly against her chest, she walked around the clan, chatting up various members. While mostly drivel, this had a dual purpose- she could fulfill her job requirement, and also gather some information about this area. Food and supplies were a bonus.

She stayed with the clan for the two days requested in the letter. On the end of the second day, she curled up to rest, preparing to leave before dawn the next day. She would be setting off for the coordinates- and the pay- that she had memorized by heart at this point. That was the plan. The plan was disturbed in much the same way she was- by an unmistakable rustling outside her tent. Silently, she slipped a thin blade out of its sheath by her leg. Her eyes were open a mere slit, and she daren't move, keeping her breathing calm and even. Slowly, the tiny bit of her eyes
that was open registered a faint light as the flap was ever so gently pulled aside....

A massive snout nosed its way into the gap, slowly leaning in farther when it was not instantly met with retaliation. Piercing white eyes finally worked their way past the edge of the flap, the entire head of the enormous guardian within the confines of the space. He blinked in the darkness, the faint light not helping his eyes adjust. He didn't see anything until it was too late- The skydancer had kicked up backwards, wrapping her back legs around his snout to keep it shut, while simultaneously bringing her blade to his throat. She was now precariously hanging upside-down beneath the guardian's head. In truth, all he woudl have to do is flop to the ground, and her grip would most likely be loosened by his crushing weight on her fragile frame, but the larger dragon did not seem to think of this. He tried to shake his head, startled by the sudden weight and pressure holding his jaws shut.

Quickly, the skydancer started to whisper to the guardian, making her voice as harsh and commanding as she could. "You are going to very slowly and carefully explain who you are and why you are in my tent. You are then going to make your case for why I should not simply kill you where you stand. Understood, intruder? You will not sound an alarm,or I will kill you. You will not raise your voice, or I will kill you. Should you try to escape, I will kill you. And I am very, very good at killing dragons." The venom was palpable in her voice. Very carefully and slowly, the guardian nodded his head, causing the skydancer to swing slightly from her perch beneath his head. With a fluid motion, she released his jaws, moving to cling like a mosquito to the side of his neck right behind the jaw. Her blade never left its place at his throat.

The guardian coughed slightly, clearing his throat. She pressed the blade further, and he ceased instantly. "I- I am Thornfang. I am a traveling guardian. I...." Here he paused, and Caelum could feel a slight shiver travel the length of his body. "...I am looking for my charge....." His eyes tried to swivel back to look at the skydancer perching behind his jaw, but she was adequetly in his blind spot.

"If you even dare to say that I am your charge, I will kill you where you stand..." Her vitriolic whispers caused him to fervently shake his head. The motion came to a grinding halt with a cough and gagging sound as she dug her blade edge further into his throat. "Fool, I am stillON YOU. Do not shake your head again or I-"

"-will kill me where I stand, I understand." You could almost hear his eyes rolling. "No, my charge- I felt it today. When I saw you. I did think it was you at first.... but, it was that necklace. I know it. I am not sure what is so special about it, but.... I need to protect it. So... can I please have it?" The pleading in his voice was almost piteous, if Caelum had a capacity to pity. She was about to speak, but he cut her off once more. "I am pretty sure it also is the necklace my friend Juniper is searching for. I want it back for her too. To protect it for her." His voice was firmer now, surer.

"No way, kid. I've got a score to get, so take your silly 'it's my charge' talk and get out of here. You're lucky I've not killed you where you stood. Scram. Before I change my mind." She finally dropped off his throat, and his quick gasp for breath seemed to take all the air out of the tiny tent.

"No. I won't go. That necklace is my charge, and I am not going ot let it out of my sight! It is my job to protect it!" His voice grew louder, and before Caelum could either follow through on her threat to kill him, or shush him, a shout rang out.

"Over there! Check that way!" The skydancer's eyes widened, and the guardian looked sheepish.

"My friend Juniper may have seen the pendant and alerted the clan guards to there being a thief in their midst." Killing she may be good at, but not it large groups. No outnumbered. Stealth and surprise and silent strikes were her friends. Before even thinking, she leaped at the back of the tent, tearing a large hole. She was gone. Thornfang stood dumbfounded, watching her go. But he felt that tug again- and his need for his charge snapped him back. He bounded through the wrecked tent, following after her and the pendant by sheer instinct.

His instincts, while untrained, were strong and fresh. He caught up to the stealthy smaller dragon quickly, and upon seeing a group of guards ready to pounce on her, he shoulder chucked them, plowing a clear path. Caelum looked back to see the intrusive guardian followign- helping- defending- and grinned. Perhaps this wasn't such a bad arrangement after all....

And with his help, she disappeared into the night. Not far out, he caught up to her once more, but she did not fight it this time, simply allowing the large guardian to follow her in silence. She could always ditch him later, but for now, some extra muscle was welcome.

The two of them had traveled together for a while, to Caelum's dismay. Thornfang (32831730) stayed out of her way, and she only ever had to worry about him when he would sneakily try to nab the necklace from her. Well, sneakily for a normal dragon. As far as she was concerned, he was like a toddler trying to get his hand in a cookie jar. It'd be adorable, if he didn't keep waking her up with his fumbling. After some weeks of dealing with his poor attempts of thievery, she grew tired of him. If he wasn't even going to properly rob her, she might as well leave. She had gone to the place to pick up her payment within the first week of traveling with him, so at this point, she didn't really have a reason to hold on to the necklace. So, after 3 days in a row of no sleep, she decided to take charge. While Thornfang slept, she decided to just give him the dang necklace and leave on her own. She left him a note, deciding to do give him that courtesy at least. It was brief and to the point.

Thornfang-

I'm leaving. Keep the pendant. Do not try to follow me.

-C

P.S. You are absolutely abysmal at theft. Seek a mentor or stop trying.

She pinned it under the pendent, and left both where she was sure Thornfang would spot it. And with that done, she left.

It did not take long for her to decide on her next destination- their travels had left her near her old home, the clan of Whispering Willows. Not much had changed since she had last visited- the clan had grown even larger, and if the stories were to be believed, there had even been an attempted coup. Attempted being the key word, as only one person had even tried, and had been quickly dispatched- Sawyl, apparently. Caelum had no love for the traitor, he had always seemed sketchy (and that was saying something, coming from her) and didn't seem to realize that the clan more or less loved its leaders, shady underbelly and hardworking merchants alike.

Arriving home with no fanfare, she was glad to see that the shady underbelly of the clan was as busy as ever. Iskala had greeted her upon arrival, and the two spent some time catching each other up and the goings on, both inside the clan and out in the world. Iskala told her about some of the clan's newer arrivals, and Caelum told Iskala about some of her more interesting marks. The two caught up over drinks, as apparently one of the newer arrivals was a brewer and kept the inn's stock full. Caelum was disappointed to hear no news on Caeswyn, but was not surprised, as some of Caeswyn's jobs caused her to be off the grid for months.

Coming back to her base of operations had been fun, but as usual, did not last long. Iskala had kept a list of jobs she thought would suit the skydancer, and Caelum was smart enough to take a job when one came her way. She had thanked Iskala, and had spent only a short period catching up with her fellow ne'er-do-wells before heading out again, on her way to what would hopefully be her next job.

At first Caelum thought this would have been her easiest heist yet. This merchant clan had laughable security on its hoard.
Or so she thought.
Her first attempt got her chased by hounds, but she was able to twist it around and claim she was just lost. The houndmaster seemed to believe her.
She tried getting to the hoard in a different way and apparently disturbed the nest of a bogsneak, as the dragon nearly ripped her throat out.
Thankfully the bogsneak didnt report it.
Her third attempt ended with her tied up and being laughed at by a skydancer she recogonized: a famous thief much like herself named Arsene.
She can still hear him laughing at her as she looked for a new lair to steal from.
She wants to claw his throat out.

Caelum wouldn't- couldn't- admit to it, but she feared that she was going soft. She had spent months in this wind-territory city of Caesura, and not done a mite of real work. It wasn't even for lack of opportunity, mind you, as there were many merchants that would be prize for thieving, groups looking to hire fighters, and even some underground places that could use a sellsword or two. She was just.... not interested.

She lounged around the Tipsy Traveler Inn, walked around the city streets, and watched. She would swipe a small handful of coin here or there- mainly from the many fountains and minor jobs she would pick up on a whim. And then, she would actually spend them. She drank at pubs. She tried ice cream. She even entertained herself with one of the strange mechanical statues that would answer question in exchange for a few coins. But never was she truly using her skills.

And perhaps that was the root of the trouble. She was haunted. Not by ghosts or regrets, but by her doubts. She had done plenty of jobs, but recently, all her endeavors had been.... minor. Or fruitless entirely. That Arsene feather-butt had laughed when she was caught. At another lair all she snagged were sweets. It was not long ago that she had visited her home base, and spoken to her mentor. Was she really already so rusty that she couldn't even pull off a proper heist?

She was on one of her walks around the city- now one of her daily habits- when she picked up on something... different. A new poster was pinned to the signboard just outside the airship docks. Normally, this wouldn't have been of note. But... there were about twenty-odd dragons crowded around it, excitedly gawking and sqawking. Curious, she approached, slipping between the larger breeds.

Are you tired of your daily routine? Feeling out of sorts or run down? Ready to make a change? Then come train with the guard captain! For one month only, he will be giving lessons to the general public in self-defense, anti-theft measures, and combat! Sign up for the course today!

Caelum had cocked her head, thoughts swimming around. Perhaps....

.... a few weeks later, she had taken nearly every course that the captain was offering. She had been unsure at first, but quickly come to ace nearly every exercise. She grinned with irony at the anti-theft course (though it did help point out a few things that she could now exploit). The self-defense course helped clean up her rusty skills. Heck, the co-instructor even gave her an advanced lesson on close-combat safety! But it was the main combat lessons that really made her heart beat. She had... missed it. For all the cozy, cushy life that she had been leading, and how much she had doubted her abilities, she had missed the thrill! As she finished up her lesson for the day, the captain approached her.

"You are truly excelling through the program. I am quite proud of you."

"Thank you." she said with a barely-contained smile. He caught the glow of pride in her eyes.

He hesitated for a moment, but then spoke slowly and surely. "I... admittedly had ulterior motives for running these courses. I am looking to recruit a deputy or sorts."

Her eyes glanced sideways at him, wary. "And how does this apply to me?"

His large paws rubbed through his mane. "You have been pulling far ahead of many other volunteers. I am quite impressed with your quick thinking as well. If you would be interested, I would like to hire you on as my deputy."

Caelum blinked. Once. Twice. Then the words actually hit her. And she did something that she hadn't done in quite a long time. She laughed. Full-heartedly. She laughed so hard that tears came to her eyes, and the guard captain's face shifted from earnest to concerned.

"Thank you- I haven't felt this good in a long time. But I won't be joining you or your crew of do-gooders. In fact-" She spread her wings wide, feeling the surge of confidence and energy. "I believe that I have some mischief to seek out." She leaped into the air before he could do anything to stop her, and as she looked back, she saw the dumbfounded expression he bore. She had to stop herself from laughing mid-flight, or else she would have fallen out of the air.

She was back, baby! Confident, strong, and ready to get into trouble.

Her confidence beginning to wane, Caelum found herself flying in no direction at all, without a word from any of her contacts. She was wandering in a dark abyss without an end in sight. While the Captain had bolstered her beliefs in her skills, she was unable to secure a contract. She left the area in search of a more populated area.

All she stole was the clan's heart. All of the ones in this clan were some sort of background in trickery. she brought them some new tricks and in return taught her some of the oldest tricks that still work.
