Aromis
The Scientist
"We are surrounded by non-draconic sentient life. I don't see the problem with trying to create a living being out of metal and code ourselves."

Looking back is not the Lightning way, at least not for Aromis. It doesn't matter that his mate has left him, gone so far as to change her colors so they no longer matched. That his parents and siblings have joined the Stormcatcher, as have many of his children, is just a factpoint about himself. The past is only ever used to create the future.

Aromis came to the Sunbeam Ruins as a much younger drake, accompanied by electronic apparatus, circuitry and the remainders of his family's fortune. He quickly rented a workspace in the Promenade, filled it with lights and wires, and eventually established himself as a circuit-fixer and general tinker. But beyond the expected acquaintances of engineers, contractors and other Lightning ex-pats, Aromis had a more unusual circle of friends: the philosophers of the Beacon.

Every evening after he closed shop, Aromis bought dinner from a local vendor and spent his evening listening to debates: mostly smaller affairs held in clan halls by local clubs, but sometimes longer ones hosted in the amphitheaters. Any discussion on how to interpret the world, the morality of magic use, or what constituted a worth-while life was sure to see his attendance. His passion however was artificial intelligence, and while only really popular with other ex-sparks, he brought it to any debate that allowed guest speakers. And he was in good company at least; some of the original Golem Workshop engineers escaped to the Ruins after its initial catastrophic closure.

But it doesn't take a genius to see that his dedication to the subject is more than just hypothetical. He's been approached by a number of people about it; the afore-mentioned engineers with both warnings against continuing and tips on programming; deity devotees concerned that his work goes against the gods' wishes (or if they're Lightning, trying to recruit him back to Tempest Spire) ; shady characters offering to find the right buyer for the right price or simply trying to sneak in and steal his work.
For now, they've been out of luck; his unconventional magitech lock on the lab door, complete with chromefeather lookout, has kept out every thief that's tried. Nor would anyone who entered likely have an idea of what they were looking at.

His lab is an intentional mess of wires, servers, loose paper, binders, cabinets, workbenches and robotic parts. Some of it is decoys, others are reference materials, and part of the mess a result of chronic lack of sleep. Notes on every iteration of programming he's tried share space with philosophical musings on how technology interacts with magic versus how dragons use it naturally and the differences between magic sense in different breeds. He seems nowhere close to finished, on any part of the project. Which is why when his previous landlords told him they were moving, he was a bit.... stuck. Generating enough power himself to run his lab would leave him without time to work. What could he do?

Help came from a friend in his debate club. A frequent partner regarding what constituted a good life, Betelgeuse heard his friend was out of a home and offered to speak to his clan's matriarch about joining Clan Mediasolis. Though Aromis was wary of dealmaking with Euryale, her comparatively simple request of playing electrician in exchange for workspace suited him just fine. Now with a new workshop and more time to debate with Betelgeuse and the other ancient imperials around, he's eager to make progress on project Tsanaie.
