Shackleton & Mrs. Chippy (Cat)
Ice Flight Representative
Our Retired Explorer Shackleton yawned and stretched his wings, comfortable in the chilly early morning air as only a Tundra dragon could be. All the other dragons were still sleeping, curled up by warm fires and wrapped in blankets, but Shackleton was wide awake and waiting. He wasn't sure what it was, but something in the air had awakened him shortly before dawn; some sort of sharp, familiar scent that he couldn't quite place, but it made his tail twitch in excitement all the same. He sighed, watching his breath make a cloud in the frosty air and disappear. He'd been out here alone for over an hour, but nothing at all out of the ordinary had happened. Even among Tundra dragons Shackleton's memory was particularly unreliable, but he still couldn't shake the feeling of familiarity, of something that reminded him of the Icefields where he had been born. Glancing up, he saw the first hints of light beginning to tint the sky. Dawn was here, and he still wasn't sure what he was waiting for. The other dragons would be waking up soon, and he wasn't sure how he would explain why he was sitting outside; they'd probably think the whole thing was silly, and maybe it was. He hadn't seen or heard anything unusual at all. He pushed himself to his feet, and took one last deep breath... and something landed on his nose. Shackleton blinked, trying to focus on the end of his nose to see what was there. Something pale and cold...it was snow! His eyes went wide, and he looked up to the sky, seeing small white flakes falling everywhere. He knew he had been waiting for something, and it was here! He couldn't contain his excitement anymore, and he began shouting, "Everyone, I was waiting for it, and now it's here, I knew I was waiting for something! Snow, it's snow!" Even though they were all half-asleep and incredibly confused by most of what he was saying, everyone could hear the excitement in his voice. They all ran outside to see Shackleton happily leaping around and catching snowflakes on his tongue. Basil turned to Aerie, "Didn't you tell all of us yesterday that snow was coming? That's why I brought all the plants inside..." Aerie laughed quietly, "Yes, but he must have forgotten. He seems so happy, we shouldn't ruin it for him." |
