The line between life and death is a fine one to walk. One step too close to death can change the course of a dragon’s fate forever. As such, Dusk treads very lightly around the edge of all things passed. However, his duties and skills sometimes require him to perform the dangerous act of crossing over all the same.

In the event of a natural death, he may avoid this crossing over so long as he does not make direct physical contact with the body. Unfortunately, though, the Foxfire Bramble is not a place for natural deaths. Curious, curious things may happen by the pale, twinkling lights of the thorns, and not all of them are benign. Nor are they all witnessed, and Dusk longs for the day grieving dragons no longer ask “How did this happen?” When that day comes, he will no longer need to touch the remains of the fallen.

The hot winds of the Ashfall Waste surge through him whenever he makes contact with a corpse. Fire consumes his bones for a blinding second, and when it passes, the spirit of the dragon in question fills his head with laments, curses, and final wishes, save for the rare few who have accepted their fate and have nothing more to offer to the ears of the living. In addition to this intensely personal insight, a dull pang will always blossom to alert Dusk to the cause of death, directing him to the location on the body that brought about the fatality, which is particularly helpful when the initial inspection reveals nothing out of place.

Because of this uncanny ability to consort with the dead, Dusk has taken to living alone, offering his services on request but engaging in no more social activity than that. His mere presence has come to signify the presence of death to those who know of his extraordinary magic, and so appearing at formal gatherings or casual events tends to put a damper on the mood, not to mention it terrifies some of the more superstitious guests without fail. Even if Dusk actively sought company, he would be hard pressed to find it in the Bramble.

Coping with his loneliness has grown easier over time. Dusk’s greatest comfort is derived from his secondary role as funeral pyre master. Crafting the pyre is therapeutic, as he enjoys the methodical stacking required to create a stable base for the body. Imperial pyres are some of his favorites to build solely on the merit of their colossal scale. Additionally, setting the body alight offers another source of resolution. Dusk does not enjoy the apparent destruction so much as he treasures the knowledge that the spirit in question will be freed when its earthly tether is little more than ash on the breeze. Someday, perhaps he too will be so free from the mortal coil. He looks forward to it, and prays his skills do not follow him into the afterlife. Being an embassy to another realm is hard enough once around.
