______ Cernunnos was raised in a small and simple village within the Starfall Isles. There, he grew up happy and loved, but like all young Guardians, he was called away from his homeland in search of his charge. The call took him deep within the territory of the Southern Icefield and up the treacherous slopes of the Cloudscrape Crags. The trek was slow and painful, Cernunnos urged on only by the vague sense that something or someone important there awaited him. Months later, starving and nearly frozen, Cernunnos reached the top of the crags. He was then forced to seek shelter as a flurry of snow and ice began to rain down from the sky. Cernunnos ducked into the first cave he stumbled across, realizing too late that the stone refuge was already occupied. A Guardian lay at the back of the cave, watching the intruder with eyes that were as cold as ice. Besides her lay hunks of meat and fur that was clearly from a recent hunt. Feeling faint from hunger, Cernunnos groveled at the Guardian's feet, begging her forgiveness for his intrusion and asking if she might spare him some food. She said nothing in return, responding only with chilling silence. It dawned on Cernunnos that the dark figure could not comprehend his words. His pleas became more frantic and he gestured towards the pile of food, desperately hoping to make a connection. Finally, the Guardian shifted aside and Cernunnos surged forwards with a cry of gratitude. He continued to thank the Guardian through mouthfuls of cold meat and bone splinters, while she continued to observe him silently.

For several months, Cernunnos and the Guardian shared the shelter. She taught him how to hunt and how to survive within the kingdom of ice, while in return Cernunnos taught her the language of dragons. The Guardian had lived completely cut off from the rest of the world, knowing only the ice, snow, and solitude. Through Cernunnos, she learned about the lands outside the Southern Icefield, of all the dragons and the Gods who resided within it, and she learned the power of names. After much musing, the Guardian announced she had chosen a name for herself: Morana. Morana's presence was infinitely strong, willful, and suited for the harsh climate of the Cloudscrape Crags. Cernunnos could not help but become infatuated with her, soon falling under the belief that she must be his sacred charge. He saw within her the potential of a great leader, so he resolved to bring to her a clan. Again, Cernunnos set out to travel the lands, bringing dragons who required shelter and protection back to Morana. Their group quickly grew and thrived under Cernunnos and Morana's care, Cernunnos and his fellow dragons being blinded by their admiration for Morana and she, too, blinded by her own ego. Then tragedy struck. Cernunnos lead a hunting party to the far reaches of the clan's territory. It was a routine trip, no dragon was prepared for the Yeti that sprung upon them. Their battle was hard-fought and not all from the party would escape with their lives. Indeed, Cernunnos deemed himself lucky to walk away with only the loss of his eye. Upon his return to the clan, however, Morana showed little sympathy for the ordeal suffered by her first follower. She deemed his injury a hindrance severe enough to merit Cernunnos' dismissal from his place as her right hand, demoting him to a mere watchman.

The exchange was a heavy blow upon Cernunnos' pride. He had failed to honor his charge and her dismissal was a sentence worse than death. He refused to allow any other dragon to accompany him on patrols, not wishing them to glimpse the humiliation and despair that was eating him up from the inside. It was during a patrol along the western border that Cernunnos came upon a scarlet figure collapsed in the snow. As he approached to investigate the situation, the fallen dragon snapped her head up and stared him down with piercing green eyes. The Wildclaw was clearly too fatigued to speak, let alone fight him off if Cernunnos chose to attack, yet her level gaze challenged him to take a swipe at her. Instead, Cernnunnos stood frozen in place, his heart caught in his throat as a powerful sense of realization hit him: here was his true charge, the one he'd been waiting for all along.

"I was put on this earth to serve something greater than myself. I sought a purpose and thought I had found it in a soul filled with strange and violent delights. I beheld a crown made of horns and called her a Queen. In return, she turned me into a soldier, and I was content so long as I could be near to her...but I know now how blind I truly was."

kojh0k9.png Charge
Melinoe was, at first, skeptical of Cernunnos' intentions when he insisted on becoming her warden. However, she recognized his strength and obliged his request if he would accept her as an apprentice. She would accompany Cernunnos on his patrols, honing her skills through scuffles with rogue dragons and beasts. Then one day the two were ambushed by a group of Indigo Clay assassins. Cernunnos was forced to jump between Melinoe and a slicing blade, winning the battle but at the loss of his right foreleg. It was a small price to pay, for that day Cernunnos earned the Wildclaw's complete gratitude, trust, and friendship.

Familiar
After the loss of his right limb, Melinoe deemed it necessary that Cernunnos be given a therapy companion. Despite his loud protests, Cernunnos was given a Chocolate Ferret. "He has the same soulful eyes as you, no?" Melinoe teased. Despite himself, Cernunnos took to the hyperactive little creature immediately. Tending to the familiar efficiently kept him from sulking in his room and helped Cernunnos become accustomed to using his prosthetic leg. Soon he became so thoroughly efficient in manipulating the golden appendage that it was as if he'd been born with it. The ferret, since named Christen, has become a beloved companion of Cernunnos and can often be found tucked safely in the folds of his scarf.
