Before she even sees the light of day, her life is changed irreversibly. Her mother loves the meteor showers, but as the stars descend from the heavens, so too do the highlanders, and her mother has no love for long-necked beasts. She is right to fear them, for they have revolution singing in their blood, and they will stop at nothing to dismantle dragonkind. The raids last for many long, bloody moons. On one final, fateful night, their home is reduced to crystalline dust, and Anivia’s egg is separated from her mother and the arcane isles forever. Her salvation does not come from the devastated realm she once might have called home. If her parents are still alive, they do not look for her, for children stolen away by the highlanders survive very rarely, if at all. Instead, she opens her eyes to the radiant light of the sun, and despite the magic pulsing around her that marks her as a child of the arcane, she feels that, somehow, this is where she is meant to be. She does not stay with her saviors long, for despite their interception of the longneck carriers, they cannot provide any more aid for her. She departs under the sun’s watchful eye, determined to find a home where she belongs. Fate is cruel, but her spirit is unwavering, and she forges forward until she finds herself at an anvil. It is true, she finds, that she is not like the others, fine-boned and ethereal scholars that glow with enchantments. Her aura burns with bright fire and brilliant light, and although she is not shrouded in the mystery of the arcane, she shines with the radiance of the sun, and for her, that is enough. She needs no delicate weakness, no gilt-edged pearl, only the strength of her own resolve. Those of Clan Yulon accept this, and she finds that finally, she fits. In proving herself to them, she finds herself. The light from the forge casts shadows that dance along the promenade in the absence of the sun, and she learns to dance with them. A playful gleam sparks in her eye, and never leaves for a moment thereafter. Whispers of a highlander invasion drift down to the sun-dappled glades, and she folds steel twice as fast. She has found her home, and she will not let it collapse like her birthplace did. When it comes time to fight, she is at the frontline, with all the glory of a warrior of the Light. She is who she has always been, steady and strong, but now she shines, having grown into herself. If only her mother could see her now! |
