He hatched in isolation, to no parents he could recall, wandering as was the Wind way. This was the only instinct he had, bar one more - a strange sense of direction, of purpose, that no skydancer or spiral he passed could explain to him. Regardless, with no other guiding light, he followed, each heavy footstep growing lighter as he neared - something. Some dragon? Some object? No, some place, he realized, long days after entering a harsh desert, as his eyes fell on the glittering waters of The Oasis. Uppercase and proper in his mind, because this was the most important place in his entire world, in the entire world. So when a coatl made to sully his charge with nets woven of crude, dirty ropes, he attacked mindlessly, claws and teeth tearing, with no thought for any but this trespasser, this evildoer!

And so it was that he was caught unaware by the others, trapped and restrained and dragged screaming and crying from The Oasis, so briefly united as they were supposed to be. He could not hear their deliberations, so fraught was he, but the magics they cast were impossible to ignore - his mighty body, built to shield, shrinking and growing frail; his spines turning to soft and flowing hair - and worst, that shimmering completion he'd felt curdling in his stomach, turning into something rotten, hacked and spit from his feeble new form. The blackness coalesced into a pearl that matched the shine he'd once carried within him and he - was hollow.
