Palla was a king among Druids. His antlers marked him as such, but he never wanted to be king. He wanted a normal, quiet life, without the chaos and responsibility of ruling a whole tribe. He wasn't cut out to be king, you see, Palla is a mute. He could never speak.

His egg was found by an elderly Druid servant. She took the egg back to the tribe, and gave it to a pair without any children. When he hatched with antlers, the were overjoyed. Their son was going to be king! The weeks passed quickly. When Palla was old enough, he started his schooling. His father was hard to please, as he had been an assistant to many kings before. He was hard on Palla. One day, the young dragonet overheard his parents talking about him, about the fact that he had never spoken. His father called him a disappointment, but he wasn't wrong. How could he be king if he couldn't even speak?

When Palla came of age, he was introduced to a Pearlcatcher. She was to be his queen. He tried his best to befriend her, but she wasn't interested in him, or ruling the tribe. When his mother found out, she was exiled. Palla was horrified. How could someone be exiled for not wanting to be queen? He vowed to change that once he had complete control over the tribe.

During his time with the suitor, a new servant was employed. The young Wildclaw was ambitious, and he wanted to be head of the royal guard one day. He made an impression on Palla, and they became friends. After knowing each other for years, they began to feel something else, something... more. They didn't tell anyone. Palla was so happy that he'd found a companion! After what happened with Pearlcatcher, he feared that he was undesirable. They didn't tell anyone of their relationship. Druids are quite old fashioned you see, they wouldn't understand what Palla had with the young Wildclaw.

Their relationship continued in secret for years. The young Wildclaw had climbed up the ladder, and was no longer a servant. No, he was a guard in training! Palla was happy for his companion, they celebrated in private. Although he couldn't speak, being king wasn't as bad as he first thought.

One evening, while Palla was doing paperwork, the door to his office flew open. There, stood his mother, her claw wrapped around the neck of his companion. Palla stared at her in fear, he was sure she was going to kill him, but instead, she threw him down on the ground, he looked up at Palla in shame. His mother stared Palla right in the eyes and said: "Out!"

Palla was exiled. He traveled for months, searching for some place that would take him in. Word of him had spread through the tribes, no one accepted him. He was alone.

One day while walking, he collapsed. His legs would carry him no further. He wept quietly to himself. Oh how life had taken a turn. Once king, now an exile, roaming the lands in search of a home, but finding none. He didn't even know what happened to his companion or how his mother found out. A nasty thought followed. Had his companion... told her? Betrayal stabbed him in the heart. He shook his head. No, he wouldn't do that. Eventually, his thoughts settled and he drifted to sleep.

Palla woke to the sound of unfamiliar voices. He opened his eye slightly and spotted a couple of dragons crowded around a fire, one of them looked his way and stood up. The Wildclaw walked up to Palla and looked at him. The Stranger's eyes were covered, so Palla had no idea what his mood was. The strange helped him up, and brought him closer to the fire.

The other dragon introduced himself, and explained who they were. Guardians of a Goddess! Palla could hardly believe it, he felt honored that they had taken him in. The Stranger explained to him that the Goddess what trapped in the body of a dragon, and they were trying to free her. It was a noble cause. They asked if Palla wanted to join them, and he agreed, after all, he had nowhere else to go.

When they got back to the camp and met the rest of the Guardians, Palla was shocked at how different they looked. Everything in his tribe had been green and brown, but these dragon were all sorts of beautiful colors! They were interested in Palla, two of them started whispering to each other. Palla looked at the Stranger for help, and he nodded to a tent. Palla followed him. In the tent was a Wildclaw, no, it was the Goddess. She asked Palla questions, but he showed her that he couldn't speak. "No bother." She said. Palla's throat began to tingle. She nodded to him. He opened his mouth, and spoke!
