Yuto
yoo-toh
Commanding | Warlord of the Toxic Wastes | Hunter
tumblr_inline_o38gt6PJCN1r5syjm_250.png

When it comes to fending off Beastclans, rival dragons, or planning for a conquest attack, Yuto is almost always at the head of the effort. His tactics and leadership have consistently brought the Toxic Wastes out ahead of the competition and kept their heads above the water when it comes to battles of Dominance. There's no dragon Andiron trusts more for the role, and Yuto has made it clear that he plans to keep his position, much to the chagrin of former Nature general and "Warrior Prince" Zann. The two are constantly at each other's throats, and even the most dire of circumstances haven't convinced them to work together.

Tengu Caller Despite his well-known dislike of Beastclans, Yuto managed to befriend a member of the Talonok tribe and is quick to put himself in danger for the Caller. Unlike most Beastclan allies of the Toxic Wastes, this Tengu doesn't dispense information on his tribe; his mind is far gone to darkness, and if not for Yuto's friendship, he would have long ago become a danger even to his own kind. The two met on the battlefield of a Talonok raid; the Tengu Caller had arrived to bring home those who survived and instead fell prey to dragons lying in wait. Yuto called off the attack and asked the bird why he was there, then permitted him to finish his job and take the wounded back from whence they came. The two have been close ever since, even as the Caller slowly lost his mind.

Backstory

Yuto was born in the Foxfire Bramble and spent most of his formative years there, learning how to see in the darkest of shadows with the least amount of moonlight paving the way. He quickly became a keen hunter, and in short time was learning how to fend off attackers in the dark and light alike before they even found where he was.

As he matured into an adult, Yuto moved on from hunting and ambushing in his own clan to becoming a mercenary on behalf of the entire Shadow flight. Though his work started out small, he soon earned a name for himself as he joined other bands of higher-ranking mercenaries and fought alongside them. He became well-known for his ambushing tactics, as Beastclans and rival dragons could never predict where he was going to come from, whether it be in darkness or the thickest tangle of brambles.

Yuto's tactics skyrocketed him through the ranks of mercenaries until he was leading his own bands of dragons through the Tangled Wood to paid targets anywhere from the Obscured Crescent to the Driftwood Drag. It was good work, and he prospered greatly, though something seemed to be eating away at him even as he worked. He went from an eager leader to a cold one; his orders became more direct and harsh, and his communication with his troops faltered greatly.

The breaking point to Yuto's hidden troubles was on a night when another band of mercenaries flew out of the shadows and, rather than aid or talk to Yuto's band, attacked them mercilessly. While his leadership was enough to get them out of the situation, they suffered crippling wounds and near-fatalities from the attack. The reason behind it? Money - and nothing else. Yuto was too prolific, too good at what he did, and others wanted him dead. It was a stark reminder of what mercenary work was and what Yuto himself had done in the name of being paid, and he could finally take it no longer. After making sure his troops were back where they belonged and taken care of, he left his life - and the Tangled wood - in search of something new.

Burdened by what he felt was a limited skillset, Yuto wandered Sornieth with little purpose for a time, only occasionally accompanied by the Tengu Caller he had befriended. His companion's failing sanity to the force of darkness lowered Yuto's morale with every step. It was chance that led him to the Plague/Arcane border along the Wandering Contagion, and from there, to the Toxic Wastes - on the very day they were being attacked by Beastclans hailing from the Starfall Isles.

Confronted with dragons in genuine need, Yuto's old instincts kicked into gear, and he began shouting orders and weaving through the battle as though he belonged there. The others listened without delay, not realizing a stranger was commanding them, and in time the Beasts were driven back and away thanks to Yuto's aid. In the aftermath of the battle, he was discovered in their midst, and the clan members crowded him, wondering where he was from and how he'd learned such advanced battle tactics. Overwhelmed, Yuto almost left when he was addressed by King Andiron.

Andiron asked him, if he had nowhere to go, would he perhaps want to stay in the Toxic Wastes? They could use an official battlemaster - or warlord, as Yuto considered himself - and he was obviously skilled. Surprised and humbled by the offer, Yuto agreed - on the condition that he would never be sent to hurt or kill others over petty rivalries.

Now he leads all battles in the Wastes, and spends his off-time training others or telling stories to younger dragons about his adventures and conquests.

Zann absolutely can't stand him, and the feeling is mostly mutual as Yuto sees Zann as a pretentious rooster more interested in looking good than actually defending anything. Some suspect that there may be a small thread of respect between the two, but they certainly don't make it easy to see.
