Oscar liked to dig. She liked it a lot - so much so that she single-handedly dug 90% of the tunnels that the clan of tears used to smuggle their nefarious dealings to and from the tavern. She dug so much that her scales began to slough and rot from the constant darkness and moisture deep in the earth. She came up for air sometimes, but it was usually just to hunt down one of her stuffed toys and drag it into the dark with her where she built a den of torn fabrics, fungus and picked-over bones.

The downside of spending so much time underground was that, on the few occasions that she ventured above ground for any period of time, the harsh sunlight would scald her skin and make her eyes burn. It was like an affliction in her mind, and the longer she spent in the light, the longer the insanity lasted. When she was underground for months at a time, she felt more like herself - though other members of her clan claimed that she had long past damaged her mind more than it could ever be repaired. She didn't know if that was the case, but she - Oh. There's a pretty light over there.

Oscar wandered off to investigate the shiny thing.

She liked the pretty lights. She liked them a lot. The more she dug, the more shiny things she was able to find. The more she found, the more her little den sparkled. The others left her alone with her shiny things. After all, in order to get to them, they'd first have to get past the smell of the rotting meat that littered her bedding, its stench seeping into her very self.

She cackled.
