THETA

Psychic Mindreader / Mate: Era

Turn back, turn back tho pretty bride, within this house thou must not abide...
In this world, few things can be wiped clean, brushed away so that they are never recovered. It takes dark skills, poisonous arts, and a black heart to remove the vibrant force that marks a being as truly alive, and even then, these terrible things may fail in their quest to strip life from the lowly. Theta, though she feels no gratitude for it, is one such example of the unlikely triumph of life, though perhaps not in an ideal manner. In the process of restoration, the very core of every Skydancer was ripped from her. For her emotion is no more.

It is not her fault the Serthis came. Her parents fought fiercely to protect their clutch, laying waste to a number of the serpentine people who had assaulted them as the sun set over the lip of the Rotrock Rim. With the growing darkness, the numbers of the Serthis increased. They sprung from the sands, blades and bottles in hand, and very nearly killed Theta’s parents with their poisoned weapons. Her siblings, a mixed clutch of Pearlcatchers and Skydancers, were left to die, but she was seized by a pair of muscular Serthis and carried into the deepening twilight.

At first the path was familiar, but as they drew nearer to the Abiding Boneyard, Theta began to lose her way, overwhelmed by the boiling sense of victorious hate from the Serthis, along with the abject terror that she sensed from deep within the roiling desert. She dug her heels in and strove to break free, but her wings were not yet fully formed, and flight was foreign to her. Even if she had escaped, the Serthis would have easily overtaken her across the earth. And so she was forced into a dark pit with a number of other hatchlings. Their cries and desperation immediately made her sick to her stomach, and she was helpless to stop the Serthis from using her as a test subject, so weakened by the myriad of emotions as she was. The input on her senses was overwhelming, and though she was young, she prayed for death, and prayed for it quickly.

It did not come.

The hatchlings, once of a moderate size, were herded toward a bubbling pool of an unknown substance. Still not large enough to overpower their captors, but growing to be, the Serthis had decided to act. One by one, in between sprinklings of potions and poisons, the dragons were shoved into the pool. Terror and exhaustion made the experience a haze for Theta. She remembers the uncanny chill, as if the boiling pool were colder than the Southern Icefield, and then there was nothing more of her that was not also a part of someone else. Dragon after dragon merged and melded, becoming something awesome and frightening. Memories were shared before they became muddled, and identity was a thing of the past. There was a sense of self as the beast crawled from the pool, shaking its mighty wings clean, but it was a single sense of self, not a sense of many selves. Whatever number of dragons the Serthis had sacrificed, only one creation had stepped out alive.

The Serthis’ mastery did not last long. Able to overpower hatchlings, they could not stop the unpredictable beast from ripping them apart to sate its keen hunger. A few escaped, but many fell that day under the fangs and claws of many heads and arms. Once the slaughter was past, the creature wandered, but only for so long before it grew weary and approached death. Its form was unstable, incapable of lasting longer than a few days at best, and the end was nearing.

From this shambling wreck, Theta was salvaged alongside Era, her mate. A Skydancer hailing from a tribe in the Southern Icefield’s Fortress of Ends discovered the amalgam in its death throes, and through clever magic and risky trial and error, she split the beast into its oldest components. Most were dead, with the exception of Era and Theta, and so Citlali rushed them back to her clan for care. Theta was indifferent to Citlali’s excitement, but in a slow, rigid voice, she told Citlali, “You feel delight.”

Ever since, her keen perception for the emotions of others has not left her. In fact, it is perhaps more heightened than it was in the dark Serthis pits, and one of the few things that ensures her safety under Malek’s rule is her ability to determine if travelers to the clan are lying as to their reasons for seeking shelter. Those who are tend to be slated for death thanks to her unerring insight. Despite this clarity, though, Theta’s own feelings are numb, perhaps frozen. Like Era, whom she occasionally assists in the study, she feels no emotion, instead relying solely on facts, but the memories of many other dragons flood her head from time to time, jeopardizing what little identity she has. Some days, she is unfit to attend even Malek, her mind clogged with the images of lives that were never truly hers. With complete certainty, she can say that these memories are steeped in fear.
