The Spiral scurried frantically through her den, snatching up various papers in her claws, and reading their contents as quickly as possible, searching for one in particular. It wouldn’t be an easy task. The floor of the den was practically covered in parchment, each page scrawled with the same nearly illegible handwriting. Vespana’s brain was as scattered as her papers, which was why she always made sure to write everything down, no matter how insignificant it seemed. But where was the information she sought?

Finally, Vespana’s eyes opened wide as she scanned the page she had just picked up, her smile growing wider and wider as she read. This was it! She flew from the den, sending a flurry of parchment swirling into the air behind her.

The Spiral sped through the halls of her clan’s lair, never stopping until she reached the conference chamber, where a Plague flight Skydancer waited, a serious expression on his face.

“My sincere apologies, ambassador. I did not mean to make you wait,” Vespana spoke in a clear and confident voice.

“Nevermind that,” the Skydancer answered, his attention on the paper she clutched in her claws. “Did you find it?”

“It’s all right here,” Vespana replied, eagerly thrusting the parchment in the Skydancer’s direction with a joyous grin. “If you can read my handwriting that is,” she added, blushing a little.

The Skydancer chuckled in response as his eyes scanned the page. After he had examined its contents, he gave a small nod. “It’s legible enough,” he reassured her. “Thank you, this is precisely what I needed.”

“Not a problem. I always keep notes from all of our meetings-- it’s finding them that’s the difficult part.”

The Skydancer chuckled again, a blush creeping over his cheeks to match his scarlet eyes. “As always, Vespana, you are much too kind and I find myself in your debt once again. Whatever can I do to repay you?”

Vespana dismissed the Skydancer’s politeness with a wave of her claws, blushing a little herself. “Really, ambassador, it’s no problem at all.” She paused a moment, and then added coyly, “but perhaps next time I’m in the Scarred Wastelands, you could treat me to dinner?”

The Skydancer bowed ceremoniously. “It would be my honor,” he responded. “But regrettably for now, I really must get this list of materials back to my clan. Rest assured your supplies will be delivered before the end of the month.”

“Of course, of course, thank you,” Vespana replied, trying to hide her disappointment at the ambassador’s imminent departure. “Safe travels, ambassador.”

She watched him fly away, her gaze lingering for a moment on his graceful form before she shook her head abruptly, blushing even more fiercely than before. Riona hadn’t lied. The newest Plague ambassador was quite handsome.

The trouble was, Vespana was notoriously terrible at finding romance, perhaps the only personal flaw she was self-conscious about. In her role as the clan’s External Affairs Advocate, she met with dragons from all over Sornieth almost every day. You’d think out of all of them, at least one would take an interest in her, but so far, nothing had worked out.

And really, she didn’t have time for romance anyway. Her work was far too important. At least, that’s what she told herself whenever things inevitably didn’t work out with her latest love interest.

Vespana sighed, flicking through a stack of papers on her desk until she found her schedule for the day. Three more meetings, all with representatives from clans she had never worked with before. Two were Ice flight, and the third was Water. Vespana’s clan most frequently worked with those from territories that neighbored the Starfall Isles, but as part of her job, Vespana was perpetually searching for new clans to partner with. Entering into trade agreements with clans from various flights meant that Vespana’s own clan would have access to resources they couldn’t procure from the Arcanist’s realm. Partnering with many clans also meant a consistent influx of food and other supplies even if a few of their agreements fell through, as often happened in times of war or hardship.

Like a spider, Vespana sat in the middle of this carefully crafted web of connections, maintaining each thread and spinning new ones when the opportunity arose. Although on the surface this may not seem like the best job for a somewhat scatterbrained dragon, Vespana had a knack for her work. Specifically, she had a knack for getting along with other dragons. In each of her meetings, she spoke with confidence and authority and yet managed to maintain an air of openness and friendliness that put other dragons at ease. She had a way of treating everyone as if they were an old friend, and although she wasn’t the best at remembering numbers or dates or itemized lists, she could always recall someone’s favorite snack or the names of their offspring.

Developing such close ties to her clan’s trade partners was beneficial for her clan, but at the end of the day, Vespana did her job simply because she enjoyed it. She loved the sense of accomplishment she felt after securing a tricky agreement, or resolving a conflict, and even more than that, she loved getting to know so many dragons from such diverse backgrounds. Each clan had their own customs and cultures, and Vespana was endlessly fascinated by them, always eager to learn more and to share her own clan’s traditions too.

Of course, she could never do her work alone. She relied on the advice and guidance of her clan’s many flight representatives to help her strategize before meetings or avoid disputes. Their guidance often meant the difference between a successful partnership and one that ended in disaster. The representatives often relied on one another outside of their work too, and shared a unique bond built on more than mere circumstance.

Vespana was reminded of this as Raine entered the room, his calm demeanor immediately calming her own nerves. He listened patiently as she explained the trade agreement she hoped to make with the two Ice flight clans and offered up helpful suggestions to overcome any potential pushback. Like most representatives, Raine knew the ins and outs of operations in the Southern Icefields, but he reminded Vespana that every clan was unique. Before he left on his midday hunt, Raine assured Vespana that he had every confidence in her, and his sincerity gave the charismatic Spiral a renewed sense of determination. He also promised to bring her back her favorite meal-- elk ears-- which lifted her spirits even more. Vespana was a notoriously picky eater, but Raine was a skilled hunter and always made sure to bring her the foods she liked best.

Vespana still had a few minutes before the delegates would arrive, so she immediately launched into her pre-meeting routine. She arranged the room meticulously, and laid out a smorgasbord of delicacies from the Southern Icefields to make the Ice flight dragons feel more at home. By the time she had finished setting up and had re-read her notes for the thousandth time, she looked up to see two specks approaching on the horizon to the south: her guests had arrived. It was time for the real work to begin.
