A bolt of moonlight shoots through the trees, flanked by streaks of bloody red. It twists between branches unerringly, even at blazing speed, in search of something known only to itself. Nothing known to Sornieth can prevent this silver-white bullet from finding its target.

Except, perhaps, a larger dragon.

Ventris is no fool. Given her slight frame, even with the help of her superior agility, she is well aware that facing a more powerful, robust dragon than herself is a recipe for a disaster of the messiest sort. This was a lesson she learned at a young age. Abandoned by her parents even before her hatching, Ventris had to face the harsh ways of the world without help or supervision. Hunting was nearly impossible with jaws as small as her own and no one to assist her in the kill. She was limited to the smallest and slowest of prey, which hardly filled her growing belly. The insects she snatched up were hardly helpful, either.

And so she turned readily to theft. Scavenging, rummaging through the leftovers of established clans, was far easier than trying to provide entirely for herself. Other dragons could do the hard work, and by night, she would sneak in and profit by their labors. Usually she took no more than she needed, but occasionally an empty stomach led to greed, which in turn led to discovery. In these moments, she was rarely offered a choice. Clans seemed to have a vivid understanding of her quick-thinking, hungry nature, and declined to offer her their trust and company. As such, they would drive her out, defeating her by virtue of their size, strength, and numbers. It was just as well, Ventris tried to tell herself, because she believed she would have never gotten along with such upright dragons anyway.

And she was right, in a sense. If she had insisted on staying with any of the clans that turned her away, she would have never met Vecus. Having been spurned so many times, she wandered in search not only of sustenance, but someone to train her, to make her strong enough to stand her ground. Being strong enough for generations to come to sing her praises was an afterthought. In this way, she stumbled across Vecus in the depths of the Tangled Wood. They fought, each one startled by the other, but Ventris came to realize that the sturdy Ridgeback could teach her a thing or two about fighting, and in return, he realized what an investment having his own pupil might be (especially if it freed him from training exaltees).

To this day, Vecus and Ventris are solid partners, the former teaching the latter many valuable combat skills, and the latter perhaps teaching the former just what it means to be vicious and bloodthirsty, sometimes to his dismay. Her blood-painted armor is only one facet of her insatiable, pugnacious attitude, and some fear what may come next. It is rumored, though, that she has drawn the attention of Bonecrusher himself, and that the Guardian would soon like to meet with her privately about a serious religious matter.
