Biography

   Bast
     the Immortal Sorceress

━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
Only few know of the ancient tale whispered through the generations, of the immortal empress who is told to have traded her soul to obtain the power to make empires grovel at her feet. However, the centuries this ancient tale has survived has left it warped; much of this story has been forgotten to the ages, just as time would eat away at and eventually make even the mightiest mountain crumble. But here is the untold story of what had truly happened, what had truly been the price paid for the empress's powerful magic and immortality.

Centuries ago, in kingdom that has been long forgotten, ruled over by a king whose name is now lost to the never-ending abyss of time, Bast labored as one of the hundreds of slaves working to earn the smallest bit of coin so that they might be able to support themselves and their families. With Bast's mother dead, a victim to the merciless disease that had plagued the lands for years, and Bast's father executed for standing against the king, she was the only one left who could work to ensure that she and her younger brother stay alive.

However, after the king received news of a raging sandstorm, he was unwilling to send some of his precious troops or wait out the storm to deliver an important message to a neighboring kingdom a few miles away–no, not when he had thousands of laborers at his disposal. He then decreed that he would be sending a small band of slaves to deliver the message instead, Bast among them. So they ventured out into the blistering desert and relentless heat, until the sandstorm was suddenly upon them, and Bast was separated from her group. Unable to find her way back to her kingdom, she wandered for days through the desert, praying to the gods, until the heat and lack of water finally made her collapse to the sand.

With what should have been her dying breath, Bast cursed that wretched kingdom and its cruel ruler; she cursed the rich fools who prospered off the slave labor, who stood by in their shimmering silks and jewels and drank their wine while she worked; she cursed the gods who did not save her. And suddenly, standing before where she lay, a figure stood over her. It inquired to her in a voice that was both old and young, knowledgable and powerful, what she wanted for herself. Bast was so delirious in that moment that she told it that she wanted to have the power to make all those who made her suffer bow before her. She thought that she was dreaming when it said that it could grant her the skills to achieve all of her ambitions, but there would be a price. Whatever she valued most in the world, it said. Bast immediately said that she'd pay the price–whatever it was. She had little to no money, hardly any belongings, and no one she particularly cared for, anyway.

When Bast awoke, she found her veins thrumming with power–with magic. And when she at last returned to the kingdom that had been her hell and her salvation, she returned to find that her brother had ventured out into the surrounding desert in search of Bast and he hadn't returned since. Bast then learned what price she had paid. In her anguish and rage, she fell to her knees with an echoing cry and used her magic to demolish the massive kingdom. Not a single building was left standing, not a single life spared from Bast's wrath. And as she watched the ashes of the once mighty kingdom dance on the wind, she swore to avenge her brother and the lives of the others who were extinguished because of their ruthless king. She then traveled all throughout Sornieth for years to come, conquering kingdoms, building her empire. And with each city she took, her pain only grew, until her own empire crumbled to the ground along with her. She only reached the conclusion then that her soul really had been the price, in a way. Since that day, she decided that she would only serve as she had once done, instead of conquer. To give instead of take.

To this day, Bast wanders from kingdom to kingdom, serving kings and queens, until their mighty castles fall and their cities turn to ash, using her magic to annihilate any who dare oppose her master's rule. She serves and fights and protects not because she feels any loyalty towards the ruler she is sworn to, but rather she does all of those things in the hope that she may someday meet a powerful enough opponent to finally deliver her the death she so deeply desires. Bast is currently under the command of Zheiron, living out her immortal life until Death comes to claim her.
