SHADOWFIRE
Coliseum Fighter Strong | Arrogant | Proud Shadowfire came to the clan as an exile. His old clan disbanded and he was driven out of the new clan that formed in its place. As with all the members of her clan, Therelassa took him in and he was allocated the role of coliseum fighter under Peryton. At first Shadow was resentful of Therelassa’s charity and her weak clan. When he joined the clan there was only one Lv25 fighter and none of the other clan members ranked higher than Lv11. The clan leader wasn’t even anywhere near his rank. He thought them all weak and pathetic and resented their kindness in taking him in. He particularly disliked Peryton, the only other Lv25 dragon and his superior in the coliseum. She is the only dragon equal to him in level but he still despised her for her devotion to such a weak clan. That she, foolishly devoted to a clan of weaklings, should outrank him just because she was older infuriated him. He became standoffish, conceited and insubordinate. He began defying Peryton and Therelassa, challenging their authority. Things came to a head when he snapped at Therelassa. The great guardian turned on him and despite his superior skill, her sheer size and ferocity made him quiver. She loomed over him, fangs barred in fury and he was forced into a defensive crouch, crest flattened, hissing like a cornered cat. Therelassa’s enraged roar drew the attention of the rest of the clan and they gathered for the spectacle. They were well aware of their leader’s strength and had been waiting for the foolish young skydancer to challenge her. Realising his error, Shadow was lucky to escape after a quick scuffle with only his pride damaged. After his thrashing, he slunk away to sulk. Peryton stumbled across him alone, licking his wounds and nursing his hurt pride. He snapped and snarled at her, as bitter as ever. She was gentle with him, she was kind, and his anger flared up again. He hurled insults at her but she just sat beside him and took it until his temper cooled and he began to feel foolish. “Pride is a good thing,” she told him once he had quietened down, “But your pride is misguided. Your pride is tainted with vanity and arrogance. You have reason to be proud – you are a strong young dragon and an amazing fighter. But strength isn’t the only thing to be proud of and if you continue as you are, your pride will become your fatal flaw. I myself am proud. I am proud of my skill, I am proud of this clan, I am proud to be loved by them and I know they are proud of me. But it is a gentle, non-destructive pride. If you look beyond your own arrogance you will find that having others feel proud of you is a wonderful feeling. Let me be proud of you Shadow, just give me a reason.” Her words made Shadowfire fall silent. She had managed to perfectly capture the flaws of his character and force him to acknowledge them. For a moment his resentment returned and he hated her for what she had said, but it was quickly crushed by his anger at himself. He shouldn’t hate this peaceful, kind clan that had taken him in – he had been rude and ungrateful and this realisation hurt his pride in a different way. He apologised to Therelassa and was surprised by how quickly she forgave him. He remembered her fury, her massive jaws and barred fangs but when he looked up into her eyes now, there was only an amused glint and an expression of overwhelming warmth. She would be a force to reckoned with once she reached his level in fighting. Of course Shadowfire is still arrogant and proud but he has let go of his spite. He still doesn’t socialise a great deal with the other members of the clan except for Therelassa and Peryton but he is beginning to forge a strong bond with them. He realised the virtue of Therelassa’s clan – its peace. He can be content here and put the skills he is so proud of to good use training his clan mates. He made a vow to Peryton, his now highly respected senior, that he would help her forge this into a strong clan that they could both be proud of.
